God, everyone is talking to one another. It's become rampant. That's OK. Talk is good. Talk is human. But the transformation is startling and weird. I mean, now they can't stop talking --from Somerville to Martin. From Mibach to Wong. Yakety-Yak.
Guys and girls, better if it were performed a bit more gradually.
Just a thought. Damn consultants.

Yeah, I'd place consultants even below lawyers... just as overpriced, even more bullshit (SFGate, anyone?)
ReplyDeleteThose who can't do, teach.
DeleteThose who can't do or teach become consultants.
Those who can't do anything run for political office (see "Fiorina, Carly")
Well said!
DeleteHey Rich, they were over in Walnut Creek tonight interviewing people about how cold it is, just like in the summer they're over there interviewing people about how hot it is.
ReplyDelete:-)
That's something the Fox consultants haven't changed.
Were they standing by the fountain to see if it would freeze?
DeleteConsultants are con artists who feed into the insecurities of managers and who prevent them from making their own common-sense decisions. What a racket!
ReplyDeleteMaybe they all took Dave Clark's happy pills that only work off camera and the only side effects on camera aren't real.
ReplyDeleteThe "happy talk" idea can work if the right on air personalities are in place. Like my grandma used to say, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".
ReplyDeleteTo do "Happy Talk" right, you need one person on the team who's a bit of a curmudgeon, the role Roger Grimsby once played here and at Channel 7 in New York. A newsman with a poker face and a sharp, sarcastic wit. (And I specifically say "newsman" because a woman wouldn't work in that role, she'd come off as shrill and be instantly dislikable. The only exception I can think of is Linda Ellerbee.) I wonder if a Dan Ashley-Dennis Richmond pairing might work as that kind of team? I don't know if Dennis has that kind of low-and-inside wit to make it work, but he does have the right outward demeanor, but I can't think of anyone else in the market who would do it any better. Maybe Larry Beal.
ReplyDeleteMO2 used to have happy talk when Ross McGowan was on. Ross made it work and it didn't sound forced or fake. Glad to see the return of the occasional interview but they need to do more of them. Hearing on-air talent talk about themselves is not that interesting. I watch news for info, not to be entertained. A little bit of small talk goes a long way.

ReplyDeleteOh, please. Clark does what he's supposed to do, which is read the news. You want giddy entertainment? Go to a circus.
