49ers/Harbaugh Divorce KNBR Dilemma; KTVU; KRON/KGO Parking Garage Matters; Little People From Sarah And Vinnie Want More Cash; Separated At Birth: Seth Rogen And Damon Bruce; Friday Roundup

 FRIDAY ROUNDUP --

*From a KNBR standpoint, the 49ers/Jim Harbaugh divorce was the absolute worst time to take place--the week between Christmas and New Years--and also the same time Knibber's star shows, "Gary and Larry" and "Mr. T" were on vacation. Ouch.

Don't think for a moment that didn't cause an unseemly amount of friction between The Hammer and his worker bees.

A meaty ten-minute phone call requesting one of the teamers went for naught. Serious business. Which only further illustrates how much Hammer Time thinks of the know-nothing/say-nothing/be-nothing update chick with the fake name and breathless voice. Yes!

*Even as KTVU enjoys a solid early winter ratings surge, the predominant word on the street is that a BIG round of layoffs are coming now that FOX has settled into the 2 Jack London Square studios. The layoffs would include ALL departments and that's everyone in the building from Sales to the newsroom.

*I don't mean to pick on Katie Marzullo of KGO-TV; there's just something artificial and uncomfortable about her. One of the things that drives me nuts about consultants is their inability to tell people, "Be Yourself!" "Loosen Up." Marzullo seems as if she's deliberately trying to remain calm and collected, devoid of personality and that looks bad and uncomfortable. Maybe it's just me.

*The weekend weather guy on KRON, Brian Van Aken,  has told management he'd prefer not to have to work with Gary Radnich if the situation arises which it has from time to time. Yes, another air talent that can't stand the Gary man.

*For a guy that elicits such an avalanche of negative e-mail and perception, those people in the know at KTVU tell me that Dave Clark is a "very nice guy." Too bad that doesn't translate on TV.

*The next big move for the radio albatross, KGO Radio, assuming anyone cares: a woman talk-host at night, probably the 8-11 PM time slot. Think Angie Coiro down the road. Just a hunch.

*The problem with the "Newstalk 910" station is that the Clearchannel/IHeart dweebs don't really care about their Bay Area outlet. I mean, seriously, when you have a $19 Billion debt payment looming, it's priorities, priorities, people.

*There's already a little mini-drama over the parking garage at 900 Front where KGO and KRON call home. The people involved are not air-talent but you can bet your tainted candy apple this ain't going to end well.

*KQED managers, all of 'em, make well over $200K --that's some part of the bad blood inside KQED, radio and TV. No wonder they're upping those pledge breaks.

*The Sarah and Vinnie underlings are bitching privately, (so far), that they all want more money. Watch soon for a catfight.

*Sorry Vinnie, your wife has bigger balls than you, metaphorically speaking. But that's not so difficult. Keep noshing on the egg-salad sandwiches.

*The Ben Fong-Torres story: How I started on the SF penthouse and ended up on the coffee table in Bakersfield.

*BFT: The human radio press-release rewrite.

*Some fill-in guy on KGO Radio Friday morning from 9-Noon: It was refreshing for three minutes or so that we didn't have to hear about mattresses and gadgets. On the other hand, his pronunciation of San Rafael as "San-Ra-Fy-El" was cringe-worthy.

*KGO Radio News anchor, Sherry Brown: Big girls don't cry.

  2. I hear you about Katie Marzullo. Frankly, I think she's just nervous and green. She understands she's been handed a golden opportunity and is trying too hard. It'll wear off.

Very sorry to hear that Jacqueline Bennett will be leaving KRON. Wow, am I never gonna miss looking at that but I wish her well. She deserves better.

  3. I am an advocate of Katie Marzullo. She did a GREAT job this week of filling in on the anchor desk. And I like her weekend anchoring as well. She is getting well acquainted with what is required, and I think she will grow well into the time slot. To me, she comes off as genuine. AND she is from Cal Poly.

  4. I agree about Katie… I'm sure she is super sweet and very competent. I just wish there was more "something" in her presentation.

Why? Because he actually said it right?

  6. Kate Scott and Joe Hughes are running a very solid show this week...callers actually get to make their points, talk back and forth with host, and it's very satisfying and classy...not have Radunzo talking over them, doing his "Let's go to Jim in Oakland...Jim, your thoughts on the Andrews Sisters" or whatever the side topic of the moment is, or absolutely marveling over the fact that Larry actually recalls a Giants player from the 70's...zzzz and I wonder what Rome is talking about = SWITCH CHANNELS

  7. Kate Scott is terrible. I haven't tuned in very much at all when driving the last week even though there is big news sportswise in the area.

  8. Lay off Katie Marzullo. She does just fine. You want her to smile when she's reporting on a car crash or shooting?

Speaking of trying too hard, Dave Clark certainly is. He may be nice, but comes off as a big SoCal phony on air.

  9. Have listened to Kate Scott this week and found her enjoyable and informative....what makes the world go round I guess.

  10. Can I give a late greeting to my online pals, Rich?
Hi, everybody, Happy New Year. We live in a beautiful state with great promise, and never forget that "All You Need IS Love! Love Is all you need"

  11. I don't understand the fuss about Dave Clark, at MO2. To me, he comes across as a very "nice guy." I've never met him, and only talked to him once when I was at KGO ... long ago. Great voice, too.

And, your take on Katie Marzullo differs wildly from mine. (Never met her, either.) I see her as comfortable and mature.

Well ... we don't have to agree on everything.

  12. Katie Marzullo needs a set of gummy bears!

    Google it.

  13. KQED as a PBS station has never had to operate like a real broadcast station. There has never been hours of live news production and local shows and live sporting events that was a large part of broadcast until the past decade or so to have to produce and contend with. KQED runs very "fat" for an entity whose bulk of programming are half hour and full hour "fat rolls".....a carer mentor of mine who has produced and edited documentaries for HBO and also done some contract work for KQED told me that she felt most managers and middle managers at KQED cling to it because it is their Galápagos Islands....they couldn't survive in the real broadcast world. The donors are throwing their money down a rat hole.

  14. Kate is more than holding her own flying solo. She even has decent interviewing skills and comes off more prepared than most doing many of the same guest. She's not quite Dana Jacobson just yet, but every other female talk show I've heard is nauseating compared to her and KT.

  15. Marzullo is just fine as she is. Isn't the place Disney enough already? Despite the likely pressures against it, she's got a manner and reserve many anchors no longer possess. I'm surprised you of all people aren't seeing it that way. I think that's who she really is, and she should stay that way.

  16. I hope KGO doesn't move Angie Coiro to week nights as I like her show and listen on weekends. I very rarely listen to radio after 6 PM. It's really too bad they didn't give her the M-F 12:00 to 3:00 show. I've been very critical of Chip Franklin in that time slot. This afternoon I jumped in the car and he was on talking about the drivers licenses for illegal immigrants. I'll be damned if I totally didn't agree with Chip 100%. It's an excellent idea to give them drivers licenses! The DMV can get a little background on these people as they must have paperwork from their country. We will know if the have a suspended license from back home. If they do they won't get a new one here. We will find out if they have serious criminal past that we will deport them for. Once they have a DL they can legally own a car or truck and buy insurance. The people that get the DL's want to stay and live here. This is the first step to them becoming tax paying citizens. My ancestors came here in the 1700's and 1800's from Europe and I know many weren't legal. They got to stay once they got here and things worked out pretty well. Not just for my family, but for the USA. We work and own businesses. We pay taxes and we fight the wars of the USA. This current group of people will do the same things as my family did.

  17. I've known Katie for twenty years. She's great. She does seem to be a bit clenched since coming to The Bay. She's sweet and sincere, but not overly effusive or squirrely.

  18. So Gary, Larry, and Mr. T wouldn't take one for the team last week and come in and take a few, a very few phone calls. Remember boys, it's a two way street at work. The HAMMER will fall at the end of this year. Which one of the big three will have to work over the holidays? Stay tuned.

  19. Kate Scott did just fine this week.
It was refreshing to hear the callers treated with respect and without the patronizing and condescending tone of the guy who hosts the 9:00 to noon time slot.

    1. You can say that again!

...and she never tried to find out how much money the callers made, ala Gary "So tell me, Mike...livin' in Atherton, huh, you must do pretty well?!?!"

  20. Kate M. seems just fine to me.

  21. The KNBR gal seems like a nice person, points out the obvious and is bland enough to fit the needs of the listeners.

    1. When you put a substitute host on the air, you need them to be competent and not drive away listeners, but not so good as to make listeners start to wonder why the regular host has the job in the first place. Unfortunately, there's probably not a sub alive who could pull that off when the host being subbed for is Radnich.

BTW, your Captcha may be the stupidest thing I've ever seen in the history of the World Wide Web. "Click here to prove you're not a robot?"

    2. The loud drunk name changed LBGTABCEDFG subbing for Radnich kept me from listening to KNBR during a big sportsnews week. She is not good, to be polite.

  22. So Fatnich wasn't around. Big deal. Who cares what that blowhard thinks? Go back to bed fat man and scratch your nuts.

  23. I listened to a few Kate Scott solo broadcasts. The good thing is she let interviewers talk, but she had little questions or insight at all.
