KGO Radio Changes Across The Board

*Weekend talk-show hosts have been told they may be history.

*Heavy rumor that all weekend programming will be taped and chock full of syndicated real-estate shows and sweet nothings. In other words, lots of air mush and nothing else.

*News content devoid of ABC Radio by end of year; CNN rehash on the itinerary.

*News segments cut during week and all but wiped out on weekend except a few updates.

*One or two hosts might be hired, (Chip Franklin is already on board), for weekday nights.

*Developing...

*Check back for updates

  1. Well, it's almost December so why not have another massacre? There won't, however, be anyone around this time to demonstrate in front of the offices or start a Facebook protest. KGO willfully broke its trust with listeners and insisted on shoving mediocre programming down our throats. This sounds like something right out of the same playbook.

  2. They cut and they cut, ratings go down, revenue goes down, so they cut again and repeat the cycle. Oblivion is on the horizon.

    1. She's terrible, the worst. She was canned at KSRO, a hick outfit in Santa Rosa and gets picked up by KGO. Crazy stuff.

Crazier yet, Melanie Morgan ended up at KSRO with OV "over rated Vic"

    2. Mel is ok, Christine and Pat, peas in a pod. A boring pod at that.

  4. Those morons destroyed a once great and proud institution. It's been interesting to find the Leykis show online and hear him talk about the piece of trash management types who run radio stations. The other day he said the worst people for radio seem to rise to the top like sh*t in a toilet bowl. Right away my mind turned to the Dickies when I heard that statement.

  5. Great to hear that KGO will be dropping the ABC Radio Network for its news feeds.
Let's hope that they adopt a news source that is conservative in content.

    1. If you want conservative radio there is KSFO, 650 and 1530 in Sacramento, are you really interested in having ONLY conservative radio? Can you not tolerate diversity of hosts and news broadcast. Pretty closed minded, but what can you expect from a conservative!

    2. He's probably just tired of the liberal manipulation like the rest of us. The whole "if you don't agree with us you're this, that or the other" nonsense has run its course.

      Delete
    3. 650 and 1530 are Fox news so it's ultra conservative...

    4. 11:07 and there is no conservative manipulation of the news? Those of us that are pretty much in middle see the hypocrisy of both extremes. I hear the same from conservative if you don't agree with us you are not a patriot, you are un American, you are un informed, I could go on, but I think I made my point.

    5. No, they will drop the abc news feed and it can come from Texas along with the traffic and the weather and they will give the National news according to the slant of Texas and the local news and talk about San Rapheeeel and all of those other places....give the weather in August and say "You might need to have an umbrella available"

  6. No one listens to that station anymore anyway......

    2. 2:38...all Melanie and Officer Vic ever did was "tag along" with the talents of Lee Rogers. Melanie and Officer Vic are currently at a radio station that is more appropriately aligned to their talents.

  7. Cumulus must pull these brilliant ideas right out of the deep, dark recesses of their butts, as it's difficult to imagine any competent sources chatting about the format, and intentionally deciding on what's been chosen.....I completely agree that KGO / Cumulus willfully broke the trust of its listeners.....and oblivion is indeed on the horizon (noted this morning that Matt Rey (Ray?) is history - some novice chick announced she is "permanent week-end mornings" on KGOne. Not for me - I switched to another station....)

  9. This is as stupid and frustrating as Caltrans closing off one lane on the Bay Bridge for supposed maintenance even though as you drive by you see no one doing any "maintenance." Instead what you get is angry drivers stuck in traffic because there is one less lane available to them. But does Caltrans care? Oh no. They know better. In fact, when they were building the new span of the Bay Bridge, they could have built more lanes to accommodate today's current traffic population, which is probably dozens of times larger than the one back in 1936. But did they do that? No. Why bother? And that's exactly how radio management is today.

  11. I listened to Angie Coiro this morning on KGO. She is the replacement for Matt Ray. I am going to listen more and give her a chance. I seem to remember her from somewhere, but don't recall where now. She's Liberal and she takes calls. Just what I like to listen to.

    1. She did traffic and some fill-in on KGO using another name years ago. I don't remember the name but it was the first thing Brian mentioned when the did their cross Sunday.

  12. Who cares what KGO does now days, it has become a nothing station. You right wingers can have it.

    1. Even Ronnald is trying on his Rush hat these days. (Not that I listen for more than a few minutes). Of course, Ronnald only needs to fill about 18 mintues an hour, what with the ENDLESS breaks for commercials and traffic.

  13. I used to work with Angie Coiro and liked her a lot. She was at Metro for a long time and then I think did some time at KQED.

    1. It is very distressing how some conservatives cannot tolerate just a few left wing host. There are in the Bay Area these very right wing hosts: Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Brian Sussman, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, plus a few other on a couple of Sacramento stations. Then there is Ronn who is middle of the road, at least he had a reasonable response to the President last speech. Alan Colmes, Pat Thurston, Brian Copeland and Karel (who I don't care for) are pretty much the only liberal hosts left. Ed Baxter and Gil is liberal, but they don't take calls. With all the choices you conservatives have, what's up with wanting to get rid of the few who remains? Just asking, but it totally baffles me. Does not make sense at all. Please explain.

    2. 9:34 You and I are mostly on the same page. I don't listen to radio much after dinner. I have heard Alan Colmes and don't care for his show, too many wackos and drunks. Karel really needs to tone it down a few notches. Ed and Gil really need to take calls. I really want to hear what other people have to say about the topics discussed. I'm not excited about listening to Copeland and don't very often. I do want to hear what he has to say about his asshole buddy Cosby today though.

  16. For the last two years I've only listened to KGO for the traffic reports. Other than that it could be some station in Clearwater, FL for all I care.

  17. rich, what is the real story behind why they fired weintrob? He seemed pretty talented but they never put him on during the day. Younger and energetic seemed like what a station wants.

    1. Weintwirp was a non talented angry hack. Younger doesn't mean better. He was a below average host. Rich seemed to like him after the twirp attacked Mattress Man on air a few times. The dude was not any good and never improved. It was laughable when I read somewhere that he'd "counsel" hosts on how to run a show when he himself sucked ass.

    2. David was great. He did his own thing and wasn't scared to get fired by that awful company. Kudos to him for being what Ronn would never be.

  18. All KGO would have to do is have some balls and get rid of the Million Dollar Baby, Ronnnnnald Owens, and they could afford to put toilet paper back in the bathrooms.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, Ronny is the worst. Why do they keep his annoying ass there at KGO? "I'm in the middle -- I'm the VOICE of reason. I'm so smart and funny. I think I'm doing vaudeville every morning. Well, not EVERY morning -- only when I feel like coming in to work."

  20. Mattress Man. LOL. That's Ronnald, isn't it?

    1. I think it's to get their names out...never mind that no one is out there listening. I'd imagine that the Dickey's think that having a sponsor pay for a show is money coming into the operation instead of having a live and local talent on the air that they have to pay (money going out). But, no one listens to the infomercials. That may not matter to them because the only they care about is the revenue. It's the listeners (whoever can still stand them) who really suffer.

  24. Wouldn’t it be something if weekend talk radio was like a speakeasy in some back alley of a noble grand city that had majestic lights shimmering on its granite sidewalks.

Imagine, a place where you give three raps on a thick metal door that would allowed you to enter into a room with walls of velvet rose patina marbleized in green and blues. Bowls of butter mints placed squarely on a long well worn oak bar surrounded by tumblers filled with scotch rattling with jagged ice and crystal champagne flutes chiming as a glorious toast was being said.

A place where you would hear the insightfulness of a beat writer or perhaps the wisdom of an ancient sage perched upon a boulder in a high desolate desert plain. Or where the blues man blows his trumpet belting out the amplified soulful tunes of things that had came and went. All the while admiring the aura of a soft silky lady incrusted in diamonds wrapped in a flowing black chiffon laced dress gently swaying on a floor that felt many of steps.

But no, not in this city. Instead weekend radio is like a faded park bench scarred with carvings from passersby. Sitting out in an open field surrounded by crabgrass and weeds with the wafting aroma of toxoplasmosis cat dung that has been buried in scattered piles.

I know I know it’s the weekend. You don’t want to scare the children or the elderly with the horrible workings of the world.

Excuse me; I got to go turn the dial.

  25. The state of local radio, and for that matter, radio anywhere, has dropped markedly in the last decade. When Congress passed the onerous Communications Act of 1996, and President Clinton ill-advisedly signed it into law, it allowed predatory companies such as Cumulus to buy up many more stations in each market than were previously allowed, and 'cluster' them. This also allowed them to consolidate air staffs and dumb down the product.

Radio is still the one medium that is actually FREE. You don't have to own an i-pod or have an account, you don't have to pay cable or internet or subscription fees, all you have to do is turn on your car radio and voila! you still have numerous choices of what to listen to.

The Bay Area was once a treasure for local radio. But no more. Sad times. Sad days!

  26. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. I remember listening to Taliaferro for the last time and thinking he really needed to retire. The next day he was gone, and I miss being woken up in the middle of the night with Ray screaming at a caller. I do find the weekend hosts on KGO to be pathetic, but what is in line to replace them is worse.

    ReplyDelete
  27. By the way, how many times did Ray T scream at callers in the middle of the night? It got so bad with Ray T, I turned on the TV on watched Family Guy. At least that's more creative. You have Peter Griffin fighting with a Texas-sized chicken!
