  1. Why didn't Raddy go to the games? As a sports guy, I'd think he'd find that *pleasureful,* not a chore.

    1. He'd probably say he has kids and a family. Does that make it right? Yes and no.

One would think GR would make it out to at least one game, it's the World Series for heaven's sake but he likes to watch on TV and has other things, (family), the schedule.

Maybe one of his proxies at KRON/KNBR could answer.

      Delete
    2. Who, other than Stan, cares whether "Raddy" did or did not go to a game?

      Delete
    3. More than you think but I don't have an exact number. I'll call my research expert and get back to you.

    4. As Radnich said on KRON "I was told, not asked, by the Corporate head(I don't remember her name*-Stan) to do the parade" And that's because she figures she paid him to sit in his cubicle to watch the San Francisco Giants World Championship. While all the other channels had the human interest interviews from their Sports anchors. I wouldn't doubt for a second Pero got hell for that too.
      You asked.

    5. Rich we appreciate you contacting us regarding Gary Radnich. We polled 1311 people in the 415 area code and 600 respondents did not know who he was, 15 thought they saw him at both the Niners and Giants games, 2 thought the team looked better when their pants were white, 1 person stopped caring after they fired Mike Singletary, 7 were convinced Gary was better informed when he watched the game from his couch than he was when he attended the games, 2 people said there was no way they would park a Bentley in any lot that allowed tailgating, 3 said it was a shame he did not like to attend games and 681 people said that either did not care or had no opinion. Our results are +/- 3%.

    6. Is there no end to Stan's obsession with Radnich? It's no longer amusing, it's insane.

    7. Raddy didn't go to the games cause KRON didn't buy him a ticket. Darna went because well we all know why! I think Glenn Dickey fathered all these local sports people cause they all want to be a Glenn JR

    9. This is a fun topic. As I said to "who cares?" try the company president.
Also- its taboo at KNBR to not mention he didn't go to a single game!..lol. Kreuger and Scott also will not even mention they went to an inning!.You know why.
And last for those who want to know...Radnich went straight to groveling interviewing Larry Baer on KRON. I'm serious when I say Radnich's look on his face was like he was talking to Jesus. Eyes WIDE open and then recited Larrys "miracles" of parting the bay for ATT, For winning THREE world wars. Our savior Radnich might as well as called good old Larry.
      Ah,how funny.
Hey,Larry was nice about it all.he figured he would toss Radnich a bone!

  2. Why do some Bay Area news anchors get paid an average of $600,000 a year? I mean, couldn't stations find talented personalities for say $300,000 a year? (Don't misunderstand me: I'm not knocking their salaries, just wondering why stations think they're worth paying that much instead of finding a cheaper alternative.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There's no "average" anymore and no TV anchor makes 600G; Dennis Richmond was the last anchor to get near the million mark and that was roughly 800G back in 2008. Van Amburg made well over a million at KGO when he anchored.

The days of high-paid anchors are over even in big markets like NY, LA, Chicago, SF...local TV news used to be massively profitable and it still is but as you pointed out stations have begun finding you don't have to pay inflated salaries anymore.

Here locally, Dan Ashley, Frank Somerville are the highest-paid news anchors --in the $400-500K neighborhood--which isn't bad money but nothing close to the old days.

      Delete
    2. Frank's not going to be in the 400K club much longer with the new owners in town.

      Delete
    3. Because some young college kid is trying hard to make their bones down in the lower markets. They eventually start moving on to bigger and better. The top 10 markets make good money. The small city anchors make a living wage. Not rich not poor.

      Delete
    4. 300g? Lets tell the truth...if they offered anchor jobs for $24per hour...there would be plenty of very attractive woman who could do the job perfectly. Look at Germany, Russia,Bolivia,Kenya..those woman are paid LESS then $24 per hour..and are professional. Watch international news.
The bad side? More accumulation of wealth in the form of corporate higher ups..who could also be replaced cheaply. Carly Florantino for example. But at the apex, top dogs usually hold on.
Before I call it a night Rich did you hear Raddy admit he did a deposition in a legal case involving Lee Hammer and KNBR? He said something about Hammer not being happy.
Gee ,I wonder what all that was about?..hee.

      Delete
  3. Rich, do you think all televised sporting events(eventually) will go pay-per-view? It sure looks like it after witnessing the Comcast debacle of the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It already is. Comcast isn't on the free airwaves. You pay for Comcast (like ESPN) through your cable or satellite carrier.
What is this "debacle" of which you speak?

    2. I watched the Series for free on my laptop.

  4. I actually had two saved..and forgot one. The other is ..what do those weekend news people like Janu,Brian van Aikens and all the rest at all the channels do for the rest of the week to make a living? Some is easy to guess- spouses. But what about all the others? I bet there are some funny stories of what they do that has nothing to do with media to make a living while IN the media still.
If the other comes to me..I will get back to you.

    1. Uh, Stan, they make enough not to have to go to 7/11 to make a living.

  5. Kathleen, some, but certainly not all.

The Super Bowl is off limits because it's so universally followed nationally by even non-sports fans. And the NFL wouldn't dare even be tempted because there'd be such an uproar.

I can see some events like the Final 4, US Opens, (golf, tennis) go to cable as opposed to over the air, but that's years away.

Baseball is already in that area and next year's World Series is destined for Fox Sports 1...so maybe a cable deal as opposed to "pay per view" which now is owned by boxing.

    ReplyDelete

    1. so i guess non pay TV eyeballs have become dispensable to Fox & MLB. they don't care about the numbers, just the higher income numbers. during the regular season MLB.TV blacks out all the A's & Giants games in our market and the post season requires additional subscription packages for a stationary camera on the game. a tough pill for avid followers of all the preseason games. they've driven me to MILB.TV where at least i get to see
the likes of Joe Panik come up through the minor league chain...

      Delete
  6. Hey Rich, any chance MLB's new commish adds more national TV games for baseball? Because the MLB has become more of a regional sport in which we almost exclusively watch Giants and A's games. I know Fox has Saturday games during the season but it doesn't seem enough to expose the game more. I remember when ABC used broadcast Monday night games and NBC with a saturday doubleheader. That type of stuff gives baseball more exposure to the casual fan. I bet a good number of fans do not even know at least two players on every MLB team but know at least two players on every NFL and NBA team because those two sports are more nationally exposed than baseball. Since Selig took over he has marketed the sport in a bad way. Hopefully the new commish changes that

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Major League Baseball is more of a regional sport as demonstrated by ratings --mostly LOCALLY driven because, frankly, nationally, ratings are considerably lower than the other major North American sports.

Outside of Game 7, which drew a very respectable numbers, MLB simply doesn't draw ratings like the NFL and NBA. That's why you only see a one game a week nationally on Fox and that's what you'll see for the immediate future.

      Delete
    2. The MLB network televises several games a week that do not involve the local teams.

  9. Why did Marty Lurie have his own car in the Giants' parade? He's a weekend talk guy and only works part time, and you didn't see all of the other KNBR personalities riding in their own cars. And is it true that he also got a World Series ring in 2012? What's going on with that? Is he close friends with Larry Baer?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. Marty is popular with the Giants booster club fans and has a loyal and ardent following, so his car in the parade I'm not surprised.
2, Other than Kruk and Kuip and Miller, Marty is probably one of the most popular non-player personalities.
3, Marty got a ring in 2012 and probably in 2014 because yes, Larry Baer, likes him and he, (Marty), works hard for the team's PR dept.

    3. Dave Flemming was "on assignment" working for ESPN to cover a college football game but you bring up a great question.

Why would he miss out on a parade, a high-profile event to cover an obscure college game? I'm doing some follow up here.

      Delete
    4. Fleming has been the voice of every Friday night football this fall on ESPN and will be getting one or two college hoops assignments every week on the "ESPN Family of Networks." This allows him to gain valuable national exposure and get out from under Jon Miller's shadow.

  11. I've been listening to KMJ Fresno a bit recently. Their "live and local" talent is not half bad...a little bit folksy or colloquial at times, and the politics, when they talk them, is a bit "right" for me...but, over all, not bad! I'd listen to them on KGO when the new talk hybrid programming starts. Any chance some of that programming might end up on KGO? Either produced there for here or with one of them moving here?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. KMJ is more of a farm station --I hear them sporadically in the morning and that's about it.
I doubt they would have an affiliation with KGO --and given KGO's status, that might be a winner.

      Delete
    2. It's also a Cumulus station...which is why I asked...figuring they'd just work the folks down there longer/harder and send it up via ISDN. I agree they're very much a small town station in the mornings, but the guy midday M-F is as good or better than anyone doing weekends on KGO!

  12. I really like Anne Makovec on KPIX Sunday mornings. She seems very genuine and likeable with a good blend of skepticism, cynicism, and humor. Any chance she could move into a larger anchor role? I would much rather watch her than many of the current weekday evening and night anchors.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with you about Anne. Her work is very underrated.
I think she's happy with her role because I asked her that very question a few months ago.

    2. I used to work with Anne and she was THE BEST. She was a day-hire and extremely hard-working and competent. The other writer I got to work with on that shift (writers alternated with reporters every day) was Amy Hollyfield, who was salaried and incompetent and shrill. As I said in another comment, in TV news the turds, not the cream, float to the top.

    3. I like Anne also. I just realized last week that KPIX5 has dropped the Saturday morning news show she was on. Any reason since all the other stations have a Saturday morning news show.

  14. I find it ironic and somewhat amazing that '95.7 The Game' sent Damon Bruce to the World Series. They are the A's flagship station. I'd thought they were trying to be the anti-KNBR. Apparently, they realized that the A's have no fan base and they needed to jump on the Giants bandwagon as well. Would this happen in any other two-team market (eg. Cubs, Mets, Angels having their stations sports guy broadcasting live from their local rivals post-season game)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, I think they genuinely want to cover ALL sports and sports NEWS in the Bay Area regardless of their flagship affiliation with the A's--and I give them credit for that --ask yourself this: would KNBR send a reporter to cover the A's on the road if the A's had gone to the World Series? I doubt it.

Granted, The Game is well aware that the Giants are the primary team in the Bay Area but they deserve credit for having someone from the station cover the WS--it makes them look good and it most especially made KNBR look bad.

    2. KNBR makes no local decisions even with local dollars. They didn't choose not to send people. Corporate told them not to. It's very simple.

She also does a lot of PTA, charitable work and she's a good person, that doesn't mean she's immune from criticism --and I thought she was way over the top in her histrionics at the parade and I called her out. It's my opinion and to be consistent, fair and credible, even people you love, do dumb things on TV, and so I didn't like what she did.

  22. Why don't the A's try to work a deal with KGO?. It would have been unheard of in the past, but it could be a win-win now. Maybe KGO throws in an evening sports show to complimemt the coverage, but you wouldn't need an all sports station. Just a station with good coverage, That's always what KNBR has given the Giants. 95.7 looks like it's on borrowed time anyway

    1. Because KGO is owned by Cumulus that would make it impossible for the A's to get on--they wouldn't want to be competing against the Giants on KNBR.
