415 Media Scientific Study: KTVU's Sal Castaneda Is The Most Popular Bay Area TV Personality in The Morning; Wednesday First Take

Of all the e-mail I get, and I get a lot, many of you inquire about KTVU's morning traffic reporter, Sal Castaneda --and most of the mail is positive.

That's semi-unusual too because in today's Internet-infested world, it's usually bad people and bad things that dominate the landscape.

Sal is cool. Sal is a good guy. Sal seems to be eternally happy and clubby. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he's that way off camera too. In fact, I'll go a step further: Sal Castaneda is the most popular Bay Area TV personality in the morning, not just on KTVU.

That's not a stretch, just the facts.

  1. Sal and Steve are the keepers of the 2 crew. Dump the rest and I'll start watching again.

    1. Agreed. I watched MO2 for many years, but tuned out when Dave Clark joined. I always liked Sal and the weather Doc (Steve).

    2. Steve is the best! I too stopped tuning in for even a quick traffic/weather check in the AM because that Clark guy is impossible to listen to.

    3. Does Clark still commute up from LA?

    4. Keep asking, the question really livens up all the threads you put it in

  2. I give "Good Morning America," about 15 minutes, at the top. That's about all of the national news that they'll cover. After that, it's celebrity gossip and bizarre murder trials. All tabloid.

Then, I go to MO2 for what I think is the best local newscast of the day ... on any station. I like the 4 principals (5, counting Pam), and the reporters. I don't understand the criticism of Dave Clark ... I pretty much quit watching, when Frank Somerville was on, and I don't watch nearly as much of the 10 O'clock, as I used to. Seinfeld re-runs are on then, anyway.

(Full disclosure: I knew Tori Campbell, slightly, when she was at KGO Radio, and haven't seen her since. Beyond that, I have never met any of them.)

  3. Sal is excellent. I've enjoyed him in the morning since what seems like the 90s...is it? Where has time gone. He's a little on the chunky side so that blows out the theory that political reporter Curtis was let go because of his girth. Sal is no Mr. Olympia. Btw I'm surprised no one mentioned the outfits worn last night by the KTVU ladies at 10pm. Haener looked great in a bright red number. Gasia looked stunning in a tight blue dress which highlighted her two hugely massive assests which took my breath away. I was amazed by how the USF political professor next to her was able to keep his composure. Heather Holmes looked like she was ready to go to a cocktail party with a blue number that had a noticeable sexy slit right above the chest. Two thumbs up! More visually pleasing than Stepanapolous on abc that's for sure.

    1. Haener looked great. Holmes not so much (she is so totally overrated...).

  4. "Heather Holmes looked like she was ready to go to a cocktail party..."

    That's nothing new.

  5. He seems genuine and likeable.

Steve Paulson, the weatherman, can be a bit odd. He mumbles a lot, and it can be hard to understand him. He seems outgoing and friendly, though, which is nice.

  7. I agree that Sal is a nice guy. But at 4:30 AM I would prefer to look at Tara.

  8. My favorite Castaneda reports are when he's having a Herpes outbreak on his upper lip.

  10. I like Sal and Steve. They're friendly but not over the top. The ratings in the market say I'm not alone in this opinion.
