What's your read on Lee Hammer? I keep hearing people on this website referring to him as a 'puppet' or 'lackey' for the big bosses down in Atlanta. Is that really true? Does he take his marching orders regarding the Giants from Larry Baer? And why do you and other people always take shots at him? KNBR is number one in the bay area as far as listenership goes aren't they? Doesn't Hammer get a modicum of credit for that? I think you're being a bit unfair here.
Hammer has power but a lot of it is exaggerated --he's worked hard to keep KNBR and its sports partners, (Giants, 49ers, Warriors), a successful business enterprise and valued franchise for the station...that said, Lee Hammer is insulated and runs his radio station as if he were a small-grade dictator --I've given Hammer all sorts of credit here--more so that you think. When he cures cancer I'll give him even more.
Yeah, well I write the entire blog; I sell the entire blog; I'm a one-man operation and therefore me and 415 Media are one --it's not an affectation, it's truth.
It's clear from past comments that Corey and Joel are almost universally hated as talk show hosts on 910. So Rich, the question remains: Why on earth do they have this gig?
Because they serve a purpose and work an arrangement that is good for them and that is good for Clear Channel. It's not that prominent a gig and very few people are actually listening so relax, it's nothing that's going to rock the boat. Translation: they work cheap.
I have no clue, Don, and for that matter, probably wouldn't want to know. Fortunately for you, maybe unfortunate for others, someone out there will chime in with an answer.
Why must Gil Gross have his wife Roda on with him every Friday? Who and what does she do for the show? And it is bad enough Gil bores us for FOUR HOURS!
I like Gil and Rhoda. They work very well together. I like hearing cute couples who invite us to "sit at their private kitchen table". What was it that Hal Davis wrote and Jackie DeShannon sang? What the world needs now is love, sweet love!...OK, Go ahead and laugh, me no care!
Me and Mr. Zwerling are negotiating and trying to come together to see if there's a time slot and arrangement that best suits BOTH our needs. It's a process that takes time and willingness to work together. Stay tuned.
So over in Jason Barrett World the 95.7 AM drive show is down to "Morning Show with Chris Townsend". This morning with tennis player Brad Garrett playing sidekick. Do you think it will soon be "BG and Townie"? Or will JB switch out entirely with a new show?
Today it was the morning show with Chris Townsend...no more Ric Bucher. Do you have any details on this change, and are there other changes expected at 95.7?
95.7 FM is the most irrelevant sports station--they've become a non-entity with a incompetent staff and incompetent program director who despite all his shitty personnel moves, keeps his job.
Got in the car this morning and the radio was already on KNBR, Murph and Mac were talking about how bad everyone says their show is. Thought that was interesting but I didnt listen long and switched to something else.
Why does Tara Moriarty frequently rest her microphone between her bosoms and more surprisingly, why has not Rich ever made comment on same? (Of course, unless I've missed it.)
If I bet on sports, and I don't I would put money on KC. I think they will out small ball the giants. The Giants play in a crap division and just started to peak in the playoffs like in 2010 and 2012.
Btw did you read in Rich's previous post, ATT is almost paid off!
Funny the partnership hired bankruptcy attorney's a short time ago!
Rich, how much longer will the moderate to left-leaning bay area have to endure the persistent and annoying right-wing media oriented programming? What makes the advertisers and station owners think we listen to Limbaugh or that twit Brian Sussman just because it's the only thing on AM radio? It's ridiculous!
Limbaugh still has enough influence among conservative listeners that he attracts an audience if not totally enamored with his politics, still entertaining enough for people to listen...as for Sussman, the worse he gets, the limited numbers he gets, outside of gun shop owners and white truck drivers in Modesto, he'll be gone soon enough--even dumb Cumulus execs know that.
Liberal radio is not boring if the host is not boring, conservative radio is not boring if the host is not boring, plain and simple. Or are you only interested in listening to someone who has the same opinions as yourself? Leon has a good point Limbaugh is so predictable, some thinks he is entertaining, but his outrageous take on many issues, plus EVERYTHING is the liberals faults, is just too boring. Sussmann is a twit, he too is predictable and he is an intellectual lightweight, Katie Green is beyond annoying. I listened to Tom Sullivan often, not because I agree with him, but because I like his personality, and he is reasonable. The few times I have turned in to Rush he totally alienates me, with comments like "liberals NEVER have any fun" well I'm a liberal, and I have had a lot of fun in my lifetime, often with other liberals and also with conservatives. How does such a generalization make any sense? And it is just one of many Rush throws out there. Do his audience really believe such vast generalizations, and is that entertaining? I think not.
Do you ever eat at the Church's chicken on International or are you one of those die hard Oakland lovers that speaks so highly of your city yet never ventures into the heart of the city to be amongst the population while taking roundabout routes to get to your homes up in the hills?
First of, I'm not in "the hills", second if you're inferring that I don't make it out to the hood, I played softball at Arroyo Viejo Park as a teen and Fruitvale Field too...I regularly spend a lot of time on old E-14th/International Blvd where all the great Mexican food trucks exist; walked upper Telegraph and North Oakland near Emeryville --by the way, if you think Church's chicken is the gospel, you're a moron. The best chicken in Oakland and elsewhere is Popeyes,--Chicken and Waffles too in JLSquare. Do more research.
Off-topic: I miss Kwik-Way at 63rd and E.14th.(oh, check that, International Blvd). Triple cheeseburger side order of hand cut fries. Old school Oakland.
The best fried chicken in oakland is Brown Sugar Kitchen, albeit expensive. And I'd say over at rod Dibble for the cheap stuff it's damn fine. Popeyes? Churchs? Get a grip folks. The best FC is in the south. Many places. The truly best FC in Cali, again it's expensive is AD Hoc
Back in my home state of Michigan, we have had a heavy influx of new Americans moving to Dearborn from Muslim Countries. I think there is a fairly large group of Sunni Muslims in the East Bay or California. What are the chances that more radio stations become religious or cultural outlets in the Bay Area, or is that already the case. Not that I'm promoting it, mind you, but I'm just curious. I would also expect there to be more cable influence by now, but just maybe they are the type who wish to assimilate in our American Culture as is, which is what I hope for.
Fremont has the biggest Afgani population in the United States.
Just like how Daly City has the biggest Filipino population. Talk to someone from the Philippines and changes are very high 90% they know someone or have family in Daly City.
I think I read Detroit has a pretty big muslim population also.
Rich ... This blog still doesn't load properly on my iPad 3. Others have mentioned this to you also. It gets scrunched over on the left hand side of the screen and has to be manually stretched to read it. It didn't use to do this so I'm guessing something changed on your end. Can't one of your techies look at this and get it fixed?
Peter, I don't have a "techie." And I'm the one-man show--if you'd care to show your credentials and want to help out on improving the site, I'd be happy to talk to you.
I wish I could, but I'm only capable of reporting what I see and what happens. I have no idea how to fix it. It just started happening a few weeks ago. I set you up as a bookmark just like on my pc, but the problem only appears on my iPad. Very Strange indeed.
The blog shrinks on the ipad 3 because the streaming news feed takes up the entire screen page. You can still expand the view, but, before the news scroll loads, the screen presentation is normal.
1:09 ... Thank you so much for confirming this problem. Maybe Rich can look at his own iPad or someone else's and see it for himself. This really is a problem and it needs to be fixed.
6:43AM ... Yeah, I tried that, but it did the same thing. A couple people above said it might be the scroll that is causing that. I don't suppose Rich would consider dropping it, especially if he's getting money to display it. I'm glad so many of you are reporting the same thing. That means it's not me and it's not us ... It's in Rich's lap !
With the 49ers now down in Santa Clara how long do you think it will be before the San Francisco 49ers is replaced with another name. I'm saying they'll change it maybe in 5 years or so. And I'm guessing they change it to something like "Golden State 49ers" (like the Golden State Warriors) or maybe "California 49ers"? And given the issues with the Oakland Coliseum will the city of San Francisco at some point want a "do over" on building a new local football stadium and grab the Raiders from Oakland?
The Niners aren't the first team to keep the name of the city where they were established, after moving to a neighboring area.
The Detroit Pistons play in Auburn Hills The Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington, and they played in Irving for years The New York Jets and Giants play in East Rutherford, New Jersey The Washington Bullets and Capitals used to play in Landover, Maryland The Washington Redskins play in an unincorporated area in Maryland.
…and there are other examples that don't come to mind, offhand.
Upon their return to The City, it will be interesting to see if the Warriors change their name back to "San Francisco."
The Warriors will become the "SF Warriors" when they move across the bay. That's why they paid the big bucks to buy the team and then later BUY the land where the new arena is to be built.
@12:37 Not only sports teams but wrestlers as well. Hulk Hogan isn't really in Venice Beach anymore. He's in Florida. And the Undertaker isn't really in "Part Unknown" either, he's in Texas.
Point taken, but the Verizon Center is in Washington DC, not Landover, MD. You are thinking of the arena it replaced, the USAirways Arena.
Other than perhaps the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" and the Pistons, the 49ers probably play the farthest from their namesake city. I do agree, though. They will not change the name.
I enjoyed Larry's radio show because he did it without screeners. I don't know why screeners are needed. Sure there is an idiot now and again but they are handled with the delay button. On a local radio station the host will hang up on a caller " that's not what you told the screener you wanted to talk about." Why does it matter?
Bill Wattenburg said a few weeks ago on his last show on 910 that he will be back on the air in the Bay Area in a few months. I do like Wattenburg, but my question is are there plans for a new radio talk station in the works? Thanks
Post-game shows is pretty much a constant --and a money-maker too. It's all about the money so you're stuck with that; given KGO's product, it's a heck of a lot better than the alternative.

Do you still think the Raiders will have more W's than Cal this year?
ReplyDeleteNo, that's pretty safe and easy pick now.

I used to listen to Sean Hannity live at noon on KSFO.
