Dana King Happy With Life; Former KPIX Anchor Is Serious About Her Political Run In Oakland; Friday First Take

Dana King was on my mind recently; can't believe it's been nearly two years since the talented and beautiful King left KPIX, retired, and chose to begin a life of art and politics. Politics?

King is running for city council in Oakland, where she lives near Lake Merritt.

I asked King on my KSCO Radio Show on Tuesday why politics. I mean the volatility and all. She's supposed to be retired, right.

"Well, I want to help out my community. I think I can make a difference,"says King who was working late into the evening manning phone banks at her campaign office. This is serious business for Dana, not some publicity stunt.

As I noted the other day, King sounded at peace and relieved to be out of the local TV news business.

    1. Now why do you say that? Do you honestly know anything about her?

There's nothing worse than people who like to come off as glib and "smart" as they throw off quips without realizing that with nothing to back it up they look like the people admiring the Emperor's New Clothes--just trying to be hopelessly trendy.

    2. But I do know District 3. How can someone who barely live there for two years, claimed that she understands that district and the City of Oakland's because she understands the Big Picture?

I read her political literature. It did not say a thing about her projected political solutions. That is crap. KPIX news sucks then. It sucks now.

How can Ms. King complained about stress at work when she is not performing the amount of work that is being completed from the other side of the camera?

I am tired of the news media telling the citizens that they know better.

    3. Even Oakland isn't dumb enough to elect her.

    4. Actually 10:43, those who proclaim to see the emperor's new clothes are the ones most likely to consider voting for this candidate (stressed out from a tiring job reading teleprompters...).

  2. She used to be married to former Raiders LB Lyndon King, who coached briefly at Drake High in Marin County.

  3. Miss seeing her deliver the news, but happy to hear that she sounds at peace.

  4. Dana got out of the broadcasting biz at the right time. Take it from me, (and I have worked in broadcasting for many, many years), it's gone to the dogs in the last decade or so. The people who run it these days are not interesting in serving the public, they're not interested in broadcasting or being an integral part of the community; the only thing they care about is keeping the shareholders and the CEOs happy so they can realize their big. fat quarterly profits. They all want 8 percent minimum, and if they don't get, they cut more bodies from the work force. But this practice is true of most businesses these days. It's all very Darwinian and that's why there's increasing unrest, especially in many of the 'third world' countries. The 'have-nots' are fed up with being exploited. The chickens WILL also come home to roost in the USA, but the very rich and wealthy already 'have theirs' as they don't give a wit about anyone else or even their own country for that matter. Sadly, Congress has become a mere lap-dog, or as the actor Peter Coyote put it so glibly: a 'concierge' for big business. It's the 'Gilded Age' all over again, when in the late 19th century, business titans such as JP Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Jay Gould and Cornelius Vanderbilt essentially ran America. It was Mark Twain who labeled the latter 30 years of the 19th century as the 'Gilded Age,' and it is apropos today too!

    1. Anonymous - No, she doesn't live in Marin. Not anymore. Where have you been hiding? Under a rock?

  6. Anonymous 2:30: You know nothing about District 3 or you would know that Lynette Gibson McElhaney reps that district and is not up for reelection. On the other hand, Pat Kernighan is retiring from District 2 and Ms King s seeking to replace her. Enjoy the view from wherever it is you live.

  7. Dana will do well in the election but ultimately fail as a rep. Here's why. The voters who will elect Ms. King are not the people with the real power in District 3. The district encompasses much of the Port of Oakland so we are talking big business with big business interests VS a transitional (at best) neighborhood. She's got to balance the drive by shooters and community leaders with the Port and Unions also the occasional tree huggers who materialize to disrupt commerce. Don't forget that Oakland is like a special needs Chicago - there's corruption but they just are not very good at it. Dana will find herself overwhelmed by the needs of her constituents, the pressures of business and various African American Communitay leaders all trying to pull her strings while reminding her to remember where she comes from. The good news is that technically 1/3 of District 3 sits underwater so she's got that going for her. Plus she still looks okay so flashing that smile will help - she must have been something else before electricity. Dana will be a one and done politician which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

  8. Do I need to spell this out? Dana King is running in District 2. Lynette Gibson McElhaney represents District 3, and by the way, she actually does represent that district. Anon 1:51am, give it up. You don't live in Oakland and you don't know what you are talking about.
