KPIX Does a Good Job on 49ers First Game at Levi's Stadium; Bastida-Cook Shine, (Although Game Not So Much); Robinson and Ryan Effective; Not So Much Vern Glenn; Monday First Take

 MONDAY FIRST TAKE

KPIX milked the first official, (albeit exhibition), 49ers game at Levi's Stadium, devoting a pre and post-game special news show. Which is good because the game was sort of a sideshow and the final score confirmed it.

Ken Bastida and Elizabeth Cook took part in the news event with various reporters, Mike Sugerman and Len Ramirez,  providing Levi's sidebars. Sugerman's live shots from a CalTrain  was both unique and informative. Ramirez' report on the traffic situation after the game was especially effective featuring a dash top camera in the PIX news car. Nice work.

Christin Ayers had a nice report featuring a young fan's first game at the new digs and got an exclusive telling viewers police made arrests at the game of some over-eager fans. Maybe they watched the entire game.

All in all, good work from the PIXers.

QUICK HEADERS--

*Ted Robinson and Tim Ryan were in mid-season form--clearly the 49ers have the a quality broadcast team. Ryan's no-nonsense style is a welcome relief from his giddy predecessor and Robinson's usual understated approach is both appreciated and respected.

*Vern Glenn, I like you and most of your studio sports work, but your over-glee interviews with 49ers players was a tad too cheesy. You kept reminding everyone that "hey, it's only pre-season" every two minutes and the cackling was way over the top.

*Dennis O'Donnell and Jeremy Newberry post-game show was both first-rate and enjoyable. Newberry's critical analysis was a welcome relief from the usual homerish ex-player take and O'Donnell's crisp commentary was also effective.

  1. I thought everyone was pretty good too. I really appreciate Ryan's analysis. He's very good. I felt sorry for O'Donnell having to wear that suit or sport jacket in the 80 degree weather.

    1. Mature post there. Why are your panties in a twist?

    2. I saw the Latino vatos all over town after the game with their 49er jerseys. Lets see how long until there is a major incident at the new park. Looks like the same fanbase is going to be there.

  3. My opinion on the KPIX coverage is that it was a complete sellout of their news operation and staff to the 49ERS who anointed them with the exclusivity, which was probably part of some big deal, either with KPIX or CBS. They put so much spin on everything that it made my head spin and got me dizzy. I don't think I heard much about the thousands of fans that left early, either due to the hot stadium or the game going the wrong way. By the beginning of the 4th quarter the stadium looked much like an Oakland Athletics game, maybe over a quarter of the seats were occupied. It made the whole KPIX on-air staff look like Bozos and shills. I wouldn't have thought they could blow their reputations by covering one event but they did a bang-up job of achieving exactly that.

    1. They were "anointed".. They have owned the rights to the Pre Season package forever..

    2. SPOT ON @11:28AM!
And a lot of people are sick & tired of their shtick, on the Levi's, the 49ers, Santa Clara, & the South Bay! One night I heard them say during the evening news intro..."The Santa Clara Bay Area!!!"

Someone, or something has an agenda at KPIX, and it isn't funny anymore?!

I guess you missed the cut-to where the nobody told the two they were on camera and we got to watch Jeremy's blank stare and Dennis playing with his phone for 10 seconds. First-rate is not what came to mind.

  5. But what does the national media make of Levi's Stadium? I dont seen any mention locally of a Yahoo Sports online story that called the new building- "Average"..."Poor wi fi" Not very hi tech as advertised, and that "The green roof is a joke..a huge stadium with a tiny patch of green above is not a green roof". They also had parking misgivings.
To me this just proves my theory as the game sold out- you can draw fans with a stadium of wooden seats, bring your own cushions,if the team is a winner. Its just a 3 hour period.
No,the huge push for billion dollar stadiums are owners who think they need a tribute to themselves, their version of the Pyramids of Giza. If they could, they would have themselves buried in chambers underground the 50 yard line and a room filled with gold. ATT is just as cold as the Stick- who are the Giants kidding? Mark Davis? Lacob? Fisher?...
Its the filthy rich egos.."doing it for the fans".. King Tut said the same thing.

  6. Stan's suggestion that ATT is no better than the Stick and that the Giants are "kidding" their patrons is typically ridiculous and 100% wrong.

    1. I disagree. Stan is actually lucid for a change. AT&T is a joke. The last thing of consequence in that joint is the game and that's how Larry Baer and the rest of those charlatans want it.

    2. AT&T "is a joke?" Well Stan, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. It's a terrific baseball stadium, possibly the best in MLB.

If you have some big gripe about team owners, whatever, don't start making up idiotic claims about what's wrong with AT&T.

    3. Keep buying the $32 sodas and make sure you buy the flavor of the month marketing gimmick i.e. hate, dreadlocks, hunter pence does this or that sign

    4. Apparently Mr. Stan doesn't know what the Yorks did to the small hamlet of Santa Clara?! This Millionaire NFL Ownership has a town of 116,000 taxpayers on the hook for building 1.3 Billion Dollar stadium! AT&T was built with private funding, unlike Levi's.

With all that money spent they could have at least put an overhang on the joint to protect their fanbase from the broiling Santa Clara heat?!

  7. I guess tailgating at Niners games is a thing of the pass with the lack of parking. Also figure Santa Clara won't see a huge economic boost since fans won't be patronizing nearby restaurants etc. - since there aren't any. Not that people did that at the Stick.

    1. Exactly why a new A's ballpark in their current location won't boost the economy in Oakland.
Brings a greater appreciation of PacBell/SBC/ATT/Phonebooth Park's location.

    2. The arena in San Jose is another great example of a sports venue that benefits many nearby businesses. But I have read that the Sharks' management wants a new arena, and they are eying Santa Clara.

Unbelievable that they would consider the SAP Center "obsolete."

  8. I thought it was a complete joke both on TV and radio. Everyone kissing as much ass as possible to remain in good standing with the bell cow. Not a single criticism was levied! In fact the first negative comment I heard was from that loudmouth Weintraub who was filling in last night on KGO but at least he commented about the huge welcome to Santa Clara sign they kept showing. You'd think one announcer could mention how far away the place is from SF.

I'm sure it's nice. It's new. It will be great for those who can afford it just like everything else. I'm just so over it. It's a damn stadium!

  9. The new stadium looked great on TV, that said I thought the televised production fawned over the new stadium a too much. Seemed like a paid advertisement by the Niners.
The trail-run soccer game really paid off, though SC and 49ers still have a ways to go regarding parking and traffic. Hope things improve even more leading up to the next game.

  10. It's always a challenge, post game, when the home team stinks up the stadium which is exactly what the 49ers did. I don't get them. The joint is jumping pregame, media out in full regalia and they play like they've never seen a football. The KPIX post game crew did a pretty good job despite the lackluster effort between the goalposts..

  11. Much to be said about the stadium, the coverage, blah blah - but what stood out to me (having visited Candlestick waaaaay too many times) were those who complained that the new stadium was "too hot". HAH! The biggest complaint about Candlestick was that it was **** too cold ****, and too windy. Soooooo, uh, waddya want, folks??

  12. Yay it's open! Now we can get on with our lives. Yes, it is a beautiful stadium but as I heard one person put it the cost of going could be in the neighborhood of a mortgage payment.

Sure 5 did a decent job but the real test and opener is when the 49ers host the Bears in the regular season opener. Consider yesterday a test run. We'll see if this stadium is all that it's cracked up to be and if the parking/transportation situation really is better than The Stick when the games actually mean something in the standings.

  13. I almost threw up watching Robinson and Ryan kiss Jed York's bunghole while he was in the booth with them. They thought he was a god who could do no wrong.

  14. Damn.. everyone talking about the stadium and the broadcast... did anyone notice how "wide" Liz Cooks ass looked sitting in that chair

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow...the Giants and 49ers each have state of the art stadiums and people still want to bitch and moan.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ^^^Jed York's stadium has lots of issues, the design of it should have had more overhangs, or they should have built a dome, due to the intense heat in the Santa Clara Valley. A man actually died sitting out in that heat on Sunday?! You would have thought that ownership knew about the heat being a problem, and designed the stadium differently, but instead they have a "Gleaming Tower" that the sun bounces off of onto the fans across the way...

Not to also mention their ongoing issues with parking, transit, jet plane noises, and overwhelming traffic. Yes Jed, this location is sooo much better than Candlestick?!

  17. Jeremey Newberry is under rated. Local, knows the game and plain spoken. He may get in trouble with his opinions but that's what we want to hear

  19. I may root for Seattle this year. I like their humble quarterback and their enthusiastic coach. Been a Niner fan since I was barely out of diapers, but I'm tired of the QB who can't hit receivers and the coach who overreacts.

The idiots who go by the name of managers/consultants probably tell him to do that.
