Gary Radnich: Radio Sports-Talk Host And Couch Therapist

I bet you didn't know that Gary, in addition to being a radio sports-talk show host, also moonlights on the side--he's also a couch therapist.

Over the years he's said some of the following...

I'm paraphrasing, but those of you that listen, have listened, or gave up and switched to listening to garden shows, here's a few beauties.

1. Gary believes that having kids is essential in life and provides you more responsibility. Without kids, Gary basically says you're not worthy.

2. It's not cool, in Gary's world, that you cry, especially if you're a celebrity. I would agree, almost, with the latter but there are people, men included, who are sincere and need an outlet to open up. Gary doesn't understand this element even though he's a therapist. Maybe he should stick to the Giant's pitching.

3. Gary says that those people who grew up in life without a mom or a dad are also not worthy. Gary is amazing, I didn't know he could delve deep into social fazes --Dr. Phil wasn't this good, my only problem is where did he get this amazing personal breakdown. From Pete Liebengood's cousins? Tom Nettles golf caddy? I'd like to know because this is all unique and worthy of an Ellen show.

OH, and yeah, that one from yesterday...a reader who recorded his show sent me a quote, direct from Radnich-- speaking about the Becky Hammon hire:

I don't think a woman could ever be a head coach in the NBA. ... To me coaching, at the very least half of it if not more, is just understanding your players. Understanding what motivates you ... I've got a better chance of motivating Larry because I think I know a little bit what he's thinking because we're two males.

  1. Radnich lost his relevance, like KNBR, KGO (and KRON) generally. A small minded talker stuck in the last century, too biased - luddite in the midst of a San Francisco Bay Area tech boom. I don't enjoy listening him anymore. As Mick Jagger might have said (in the last century LOL) "I used to love him, but its all over now!" -- Your one and only A's Truthteller @As_Truthteller

  2. Do a search on famous people who have never had kids. What a group of unworthy people! Gary Radnich will go down as a "personality," and quintessential bullshitter who made a trainload of money.

  3. Pig Vomit is live on Ronnn's show right now - 9:10 am - Ronnn is asking him a series of extemporaneous questions....the guy is TOTALLY weird. Fasten your seatbelts, KGO!

  4. Guess I'm double unworthy; my dad died when I was 11, and never had kids because I knew I'd be a shitty parent. Pardon me for using up oxygen, Mr. Radnich. Used to like Gary, but like a house guest he's hung around a bit too long and is no longer welcome around here.

  5. I watch the Mike Francesca show on FOX Sports. He's basically the Gary of NYC. Actually it's the opposite.

Francesca used to be with chris Russo who is a huge Giants fan, but now he's alone. No average sidekick, and no token sports chick. He BLOWS GARY AWAY. I'm a bay area fan and yet this guy is 10x more entertaining than Gary. Even in his older age he's still seems relevant.

  6. I missed yesterdays show..and too bad I missed the first two minutes or so of his 6:45 KRON..but Pam Moore wasn't happy and said "I don't want to talk about that". As far as I know,Raddy didn't say what that was about or,mention the first female NBA coach story. Today,Kate Scott called Krueger a "jerk for yesterday". Krueger agreed with "No woman here" philosophy?
And to make a long post short..Raddy- as I've posted before- takes both sides, and if you pin him down -Like the Joker- he cackles and puts it on you that "You don't get its schtick". And that is like the slimy frat boy who thinks he's smarter then everybody. Raddy, the 64 year old frat boy.

  7. Why don't we all just ignore that overpaid, overfed windbag, and that includes you, Rich. Stop giving him the publicity he craves. Anybody who would bone Anna Chavez isn't worth the time of day.

  8. HUH? This is what Rich Lieberman is up in arms about, that Gary Radnich "doesn't think a woman could ever be a head coach in the NBA."

Yeah so what's the big deal? MANY people feel that way. This is what Lieberman is so angry about? Why?

    1. It's just Gary's opinion. He is paid to talk, so he talks. I'm quite sure if the angered ones were given a mic for 3 hours a day, at some point, you'll piss off most everyone who listens.

  9. Gary hides behind his wife and kids. He uses his family to boost his public image ... and probably his own self esteem. The natural consequence is to trash those who don't follow his idea of the "worthy" middle-aged man.

As for the Becky Hammon controversy from yesterday, I thought it might have been an attempt to create buzz and publicity. It was in the opening segment after all. I had also suspected the infamous Damon Bruce rant was a stunt. But Gary seemed to pull back after his initial words. He started off the show saying he didn't think a woman could coach men effectively in the NBA. But then later he seemed to take the position that it's something far off into the future.

And I don't KNBR is the type of station that appreciates unnecessary controversy, especially dealing with progressive causes. 95.7 The Game seems to pander to the worst kind of sports fan. KNBR is most interested in managing their sports teams. The Game, like the Oakland A's, is attempting to find value in underappreciated assets like Damon Bruce and Tony Bruno -- guys with baggage and controversy attached to them who have loyal listeners.

Surely, you underestimate my ability to suck. No stunt, no sandbox, just suck.

      BTW, not calling you Shirley.

  11. must've been a slow news day in the Bay Area for Lieberman to do a Radnich column - Gary's comments were pretty mild & reflect the dilemma of trying to fill 3 hrs of air time with some sort of relevant content. I just think it's ironic given that Lieberman's blog has produced some absolute crazy howlers over time - much more silly than any of Gary's "rants".

(a previous poster mentioned Francesa - I'm originally from NYC & have noticed a sharp decline in Mike's work - but he's still one of the best of a mostly sorry lot in sports talk.) [And, yes, Damon Bruce still sucks.]
