Thursday Blast: Cheryl Jennings and Spencer Christian Out at KGO-TV

Cheryl Jennings and Spencer Christian --both longtime KGO-TV, (ABC7), air talent, will not have their contracts renewed come December and are OUT at the SF O and O, according to multiple station and broadcast sources.

Jennings has seen a thirty-year stint at 900 Front, including anchoring and reporting and has landed numerous industry awards but in her mid-to-late 60's and making the money she makes, ABC simply has decided it's time for her to leave.

Christian came to the Bay Area on the coattails of his work at "Good Morning America" and a desire to get out of New York.

He's been at KGO for 15 years and, according to one of the sources, "simply makes way too much money" and was deemed disposable.

  2. How is she going to pay for the maintenance on that face? Spencer has been ROAD for 15 yrs.

  3. Does anyone write anything nice about others anymore? Its hard to stomach middle-aged folk hide behind a computer and tear others apart. Grow up!

    1. Nobody forced these people to get paid 300k to read a telepromter. Like a pro athlete their time to make those big bucks was limited. These two got a lot of big paydays doing this but their is always somebody younger cheaper coming up especially if they have a Disney Daddy.

    2. Hey slappy @ 316: Facts are facts. You in denial? Can't handle the truth? Whoop! There it is!

  4. Boffo... Christian is a bit of a surprise but you don't need a genius making large Dollars pulling up the National Weather Service website to come up with a forecast. Jennings was far overdue. She is a sweet lady and obviously loves what she does but it is impossible/completely distracting to watch her with all the cosmetic work done to her face..

  5. Why on earth do these anonymous trolls make nasty comments about someone's god given appearance and then SLAM someone who's had work done??? What makes you happy? Why does Rich allow this form of bullying on his site and tolerate trolls picking apart the looks of news women? Disgusting!

    2. We can talk shit about anybody because this is the internet! Where keyboard warriors prey upon the weak minded.

And do you really want to see an ugly person doing the news? I think not!

    4. I make well over $400k a year almost $550k a year with the wife.

You would never ever know it. We like it that way.

No flash no bragging no showing off. Oh our parents raised us right to live within your means, save money, and not show off and be braggers.

  6. Really, that's the new model isn't it? Not be the best or top rated. Just be competitive, work cheap, and sell, sell, sell advertising. Its what KRON has operated on. ALL their Anchors took 50% pay cuts you reported last year.

No more Woodward and Bernstein reports..its now Yellow police tape and lazy GGB highly paid painters. Nice and interesting, but not really deep journalism.

Stanley Roberts is now dean of bay area "Investigates". Not a bad thing...but Stanley doesn't even have a trench coat or fedora.

  9. Astute Craigslist/SF Bay Area readers would have known something was up weeks ago, when Craigslist ads started appearing for KGO TV news broadcast talent: Newscast Anchor and Weather Reporter. It was just a matter of time when the music would stop and those who found themselves without chairs were shown the door.

  11. Cheryl Jennings has been covering the news as both a hard-working reporter and anchor for decades. I remember her well from my own time at KPIX. She was fearless. Good for her.She should be congratulated for being a survivor in a very superficial business for as long as she has, not mocked by those who will never accomplish even a portion of what she has.
There's a funny thing that happens over time to everyone. You get older, hopefully.. Veterans develop sources, something that newbies just don't have. Finally, did you really think all those over forty men in local television didn't get botox?frequently? The rule is two female facelifts for every male facelift...really.

    1. I don't ever remember a time when I saw Don Sanchez Not wearing make up. My semi regular encounters with him were not about tv. I just figured it was part of the territory.

  12. Almost on Trixie's side here. Neither is worth the $$$, nor was Sanchez or a few of the others they've shed recently. They're from an era when there were three network stations and average news reporters in a top 10 market made half a million a year just for showing up. In this YouTube/Twitter/Facebook/Google/Netflix/Amazon.cable/dish age, them days is long gone!

    1. Trixie LIKES to fire people. She thinks she's in bed with Disney but in the end they'll dump her too. Her departure will be to "raise morale."

    2. Excellent point at 4:42pm. The way we obtain our news has changed.

30 years in the finance business teaches you some things about people.

  14. I suppose KGO will hire talentless hacks like other Bay Area stations. For proof, check
out Da Lin on KPIX. He butchered another live shot tonight. Look at the camera DA!!!!!

  15. Confirming that tried and true - and sad - saying: IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY! (Of course, money has always factored in - but in the last few years, it seems to govern EVERY decision made in every sector of society). Ugh.

  16. Back when anchors were being paid $1 mill a year around 30 years ago?..All people said was why?..they just read a teleprompter. It took three decades but the news business now see's it the laymen way back then. "Pay a fortune to keep on air talent"..is replaced by $10.00 an hour, and no extra pay on Christmas. Like the rest of us.

  17. Hopefully Spencer was wise with his money the last few years. As I recall he had expensive taste in fine wine a few years ago (Grand Cru Burgundy and Bordeaux) and was forced to declare bankruptcy. Today Bordeaux is highly overpriced and Burgundy is in danger of price inflation due to Asian money paying over the top prices for the Crus. Those of us with more modest wallets still drink great, tip for you guys: look for great bargains in the Loire Valley, Jura, Savoie and Corsica. Excellent juice coming out of those regions at great prices. Let the posers pay $900 a bottle for trophy bottles...
