Friday PM Late Stuff:
*Dan Ashley will offer a few moments of tribute to Carolyn Johnson on tonight's KGO-TV News, probably 6 and 11.
*I'm told station management had a little powwow for CJ this afternoon in the newsroom.
*John Kessler, from KGO Radio, did a farewell on Friday and is off to an unknown NY location. I wonder what prompted it. I mean, it's not as if...wait a minute.
*Original Joe's counter on a Friday night at about 9--linguini and clams. A glass of cab. I'm sure it won't be crowded.
*Yeah, I like red wine with linguini without red sauce--yooooou gotta problem with that?
*Hey, Channel 2, that new reporter, Ms. Smith? Pretty sad when your own workers are sending me jokes. Must have been a Boy Wonder hire.
*When even Gary Radnich on KNBR is making fun of the Giants for announcing "sellouts" in spite of a whole bunch of empty seats at various games speaks volumes. Even "tickets sold" doesn't cut it here because someone high up in the food chain told me there's plenty of good seats available, like tonight, for example. Oh well, at the end of the day, it is what it is.
*Larry Baer just bitch-slapped the great Radu.
*Your 12,550th live shot from Southbound 280 --5, 6, 9, the 10 and 11. (We thank Cal Trans for its contribution to Bay Area TV)
*Have a safe Memorial Day Weekend. ("Happy" is sort of oxymoron, thanks), but be happy, pay your respects and be careful out there.
*Follow me on Twitter
Oh, I get it. You're assuming that John Kessler, in a week's span, read your blog and then immediately found a new job 2500 miles away. Totally makes sense. The part time news anchor was privy to inside info, then acted on it. Nailed it, Rich.
ReplyDeleteRich may not get sarcasm, or he's finally posting criticisms.
DeleteJK doesn't have to read Rich's blog to know how fucked KGO and the rest of Bay Area media is today.
DeleteFrankly, I wonder why *anyone* goes into this field these days. You have more career stability as a Peet's barista, and probably the same pay too. Plus Tracey Watkowski isn't your boss.
It's not just media. All the lawyers I know are telling their kids to get into technology and all the techies tell their kids to be lawyers. Nuts.
DeleteWe had a financial collapse five years ago and in the wake of that event many of us seem to have lost our common sense if not our total collective memory. About half the population acts as if it just fell off the back of a truck. An entire generation has been inculcated that it can change the world by punching keys on a keyboard or smartphone or bogarting the rest of us out of our cars and onto bicycles. I think most of this has to do with monetary policy and financial deregulation beginning with the repeal of Glass-Steagall in 1999. Things were so good for so long and we inflated our markets to such an extent that the hangover will take decades to recover from. So, we have a ton of over credentialed, over educated, entitled, spoiled kids on our hands. Someone has to get a handle on this or it's gonna ruin us. The adults need to take control.
Yeah, wild speculation about John Kessler of course why not. In fact John is relocating to his home town in upstate New York to take care of a family member and has a job at a small TV station as an anchor. Of course, you could have called and asked him and he would have told you, but nope.. had to take a cheap shot at KGO without any actual information.
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing a lot about folks cashing out and returning to their roots. It has simply become oppressively expensive to live here. I could sell my place here, go back to Ohio and buy two houses with cash! We only stay because of what we do for a living.
DeleteDid anyone else get concerned about the arrest of a drunken and allegedly belligerent Gregg Jarrett and immediately thought it was Greg Jarrett formerly of KGO radio? I did too. What a difference a "g" makes!
ReplyDeleteHe was always on evenings and weekends which tells me Ailes thought he was a second or third stringer at best.
DeleteWe only watch for the chicks anyway. Every time I see Kim Guilfoyle my heart rate goes up.
Carolyn got an opportunity to say goodbye. Many never get that chance and she was lucky to find another job and leave on her own terms. Best of luck to her in LA
ReplyDeleteJust for the record, for what it's worth, I'd like to say that what Dan said at the end--that Carolyn's the same off air as on and a really down-to-earth person--well, they always say that in times like this, but it is definitely, completely true. I worked with her for several years and she is a wonderful person whom I've never seen display any ego or push herself around on people. Catherine Heenan is another. There are too few such people in the world.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn will be on the national stage soon enough.
