Up and Comer at KGO-TV: Katie Marzullo; Monday Headlines Sunday

Katie Marzullo sort of snuck up on me. I've seen the KGO-TV, (ABC 7) anchor and General Assignment reporter and was impressed with her steady work and delivery.

With the probability of weekend anchor, Ama Daetz, moving to the weekdays to replace Carolyn Johnson, might the up-and-coming Marzullo become the permanent weekend-evening anchor?

We'll talk more about this and other media matters Monday.

  1. Katie is as sweet as they come. Hard worker dedicated and on the way up. She came to KGO 7 from KCOY (CBS12) in Santa Maria -- where she anchored nights with Arturo Santiago just weeks befor the station collapsed and started simulcasting KION in Salinas. Katie was and is terrific and she'll be great. KCOY and KION are both CBS affiliates under Cowles of CA and the Central Coast hates watching KION anchors (husband and wife team) doing San Luis Obispo / Santa Maria news. The ratings prove it. Good opportunity for Katie almost two years ago to move to KGO and she's done well. Here's to much more good luck, Katie! A big fan.

    1. The news here on the Central Coast is a mess. Marc and Jas are about as bad as they come, and the others on KCOY and KKFX are just as bad. Recently News-Press & Gazette Company (the owners of KEYT in Santa Barbara) bought KKFX, KION and KMUV (Telemundo). They also now run KCOY under a shared services agreement (Cowles retained ownership). This hasn't brought up the level of the new broadcasts appreciably, but it does bring a larger pool of reporters into play (not a bad thing). KEYT, KKFX and KCOY now brand their newscasts with the phrase "The power of three". They also seem to have "disappeared" the dreadful Jacqueline Tualla from the weekend anchor desk (although her replacement isn't much better).

  2. ooooo. Liz is doing tonight's news (Sunday, 5:30). I am encouraged. Can this be the 'gentle exit'.

It's amazed me that Disney Dad and Liz's husband have endured this embarrassment without suggesting Bakersfield. They must read this blog; they must see that she's not a hit here in Fricso.

  3. Katie is great. I was a big fan down in SLO.

  4. Rich, please address Karel's on-air marijuana usage...do we have any recourse? I've tried filing complaints w/the FCC against Karel's holocaust comments in the past & they went nowhere. Should I even contact KGO? What about the Long Beach PD?

    1. He was putting the audience on, plus you sure seem hell-bent on causing problems. If you don't like him, then quit listening... and bitching. I am not crazy about Karel, but he beats KGO's weekday line-up of continuous andf repetitive news "stories."

    2. Sorry, Emma. He wasn't putting the audience "on." He was using his "medical marijuana" on air (three times in the first half hour,) and "threw up" Saturday and looking for sympathy.

Why? Because he lost his next-to-last radio station in syndication, KXRA in Monterey, though it was just an internet station. He had lost his job on the 10,000 watt station at 540 almost a year ago. There was no money, no sponsors and Karel found himself, again, on the street last week.

The FCC will do nothing. They leave that to Cumulus Media to handle and Cumulus has way too many things to worry about among their stations right now. :"Quit listening" isn't, though practical, not the point. There are so many better people to be on KGO, but Karel is not quite at the top of the list to terminate -- yet. But he will be.

His other problem is the fact that he continues to misunderstand why "progressive" or "radical" talk is fading out quickly, though he did address "how conservative" California has become and he can't stand it, obviously. It means he has to fold up the circus tent and go away because few people are listening to him, let along supporting him. He's "blaming" everyone else for his failure.

Why is that? The times are a' changin'. It's not that the state is "conservative" anymore than it is he is "progressive." It's that his kind of "talk" does not make his company any money and so many have done what you suggest, "quit listening." Just like at KFI, the novelty of a self-admitted on-air "queer" isn't fun or unique anymore. His "schtick" as a flaming queen has given it's run after seven years (following his first firing at KGO) and the radio listeners are not, in general, listening to him or that brand of talk when advertisers don't buy it to keep it alive. That simple.

His "act" is another $500 a weekend and health benefits "lost" if he loses KGO and he is very worried about that -- and should. KGO will be back doing more sports within four months at night on weekends. They have to go where the money is -- and Karel isn't it. You make a good comparison with weekday and Karel -- but the fact is, it's all about the $$$$ and Karel's candle has burned out and he knows it. He's lost all but two affiliates in the last six months and he has not succeeded on his "makeover" to TV, film or music. At 51, going on 15,, it's not working out and Karel knows it. You can see it on his webcam. He's not happy and he doesn't like that people listen just to hope for him to blow himself up and lose it on-air. You're not even convinced with his act, are you? It shows. .

    3. To 3:38, if he gets your panties in such a wad turn him off, don't listen.

    4. It was KRXA / internet when it was on 540. Damn, now I face the wrath of "Christine" for a typo. She'll whip me, maybe wearing tight leather, low cut top and with tennis shoes. She won't do high heels and find the a curse. Or, maybe she'll do a bikini shot like she did for the troops many years ago. It didn't finalize at the last minute after the Sacramento station got scared to do it. The pic is online, however.

    5. And yet you STILL listen to the guy...

    6. No. I just "hear" him. I'm just waiting for the "blow up" to occur, when he's finally taken kicking and screaming off the air like he needs to be. Are you the person who listens to him every weekend as his biggest fan? Why do YOU listen? To hear the newest Andrew & Karel story?.

    7. I like hearing how bad morons like Karel have ruined radio in this market and the west coast with no one paying attention to him. Not even his bosses. So, hot shot, why do YOU listen to the queen of hearts?

At least I had the facts correct, not just "sucking" up to the creep like you.

    8. Call Long Beach PD! No telling what they'll find ...

    9. Listen, hear whatever. Stop the tap dance. You made the decision to tune in, logon or whatever you want to call it. Here is a simple idea. DON'T DO IT IF HE ANNOYS YOU THAT MUCH. And then you come to Rich's blog and write up a manifesto about it. Get a life. Listen to something else. Or maybe it is "hear" something else. You basically keep coming to the railroad tracks everyday hoping you will see a train wreck.

Let me make this real simple for you. When people tune out ratings go down. And when ratings go down so does ad revenue. And when ad revenue goes down salaries get cut or they lose their jobs. And when that happens, Rich Lieberman blogs about it.

      Now go get DirecTV.

    10. Nah, I a DISH Net user. Plus, I love coming by just to piss you off. I'll listen to what I want, trainwrecks and all like others do and you do what you want, ok? Ratings HAVE gone down Ad revenue HAS gone, salaries GET cut (his by 50% upon his return to KGO) and too many HAVE lost their jobs -- except Karel. Your point? You're as angry and bitter as he is. Thanks for playing.

  5. She is a pretty good news reporter but something about her bugs me. Like she tries to be funny after reading a story, or she tries to make little stupid comments. No one can do that better that Robin Meade over on HLN, but that is just Robin's personality.

    1. Just because numb nuts Karel has, as we all do (so far) Freedom of Speech and First Amendment Rights doesn't mean they always need to show just how stupid, ignorant and idiotic some people are. The "red carpet" phony would scream "Fire!" in a dark theater (porn, probably) if he had the chance. Doesn't mean one should.

  6. Dear 9:23..the "Support the Troops"pin up picture raised several thousand dollars for the families of soldiers deployed in the first Iraq war. The station that produced the pictures, and whose promotions department sold them and sent them, was KFBK in Sacramento. At the time, I was the afternoon talk host. Originally, there was no bikini. a camo one was painted on. I would share it with you here happily, but there is no photo feature on this site.

  7. Christine, really? You lived such a facade being of f air what you're not, apparently.

YOU discovered Rush? Really? Doubtful. Ed McGlaughlin "really" discovered him for national radio. Rush replaced Morton Downey, Jr. on KFBK and Rush was already doing some talk in Kansas City and landed in Sacto in 1984. You were writing your book at that time and then and quitting KEYT.in '86. "With a bank account as empty as when she began her lawsuit.".

"Navy brat Craft made a point of one-upping him (Rush), posing for nude photos—her back to the camera and “U.S.A.” emblazoned on her behind—that she told her listeners she’d send (them) to the troops as a morale booster. (Craft’s radio station chickened out and, recalled one of her friends, airbrushed in a red, white and blue bikini.)

    Chickend out? Really?

How that brokered show idea at 1240 KSCA that had no signal work out?

    October 11, 2007
    Christine Craft out at KSAC
Christine Craft, who's been Sacramento's lone lefty radio talk show host, says she has parted ways with KSAC (1240 AM).
Craft, who has been on "vacation" since early September, had been scheduled to return this month. But she says she could not reach a contract agreement with station owner Paula Nelson. (Nelson could not be reached for comment today.)
Peter B. Collins, a syndicated host, took over Craft's 3-to-6 p.m. slot in September.
"Paula Nelson offered me a one-hour program starting in November if I can find sponsors," Craft says. "But I'm not really a salesperson. I'm a lawyer and a media person. So, I'm basically unemployed now."

Craft had been at KSAC for three years; she was the last remaining local talk show host on the station

Christine, you need not seek approval. Go be the next Randi Roades while there's still time. Just keep your facts straight.

  8. I didn't discover Rush. I gave Rush his first job in television, not radio. I was anchor and managing editor at Ch. 31. Rush was on KFBK. He was the most original voice I'd ever heard..I laughed so hard, I cried at times. I was extremely enthusiastic about adding him to our newscasts with commentary very friday. He was a dream to work with, full of trenchant political analysis and very, very funny, and a gentleman in a good way. Ch .31 was a short distance from the Capitol here in Sacramento, and from KFBK. That said, though brilliant on radio, he wasn't great on TV. I then left 31 to go to law school and was hired by KFBK to do the afternoon show after Bernie Ward left. McGeorge has a four year night school program, so many students work. Doing a radio show every day was perfect.
The pin up picture can be seen in the article you link. As you'll notice,( unless you are color blind and not fact-impaired, the painted on swimwear is brown camouflage, not red, white and blue. My posterior was never in the photograph, nor did it ever have any writing upon it. Both the original and the paint added one are extremely modest, showing no more back than your average evening gown. I dare you to see it differently. The families of many Sacramento area deployed soldiers had their utility bills paid for by that picture. I opposed the first Iraq war and was challenged to" put my body where my mouth was". and so I did. Yes, as a Navy brat, I support our military, though not necessarily agreeing with those sending them into harm's way.
Little KSAC, now a black gospel religious station, was a fun vehicle for a lot of political theater in Sacramento, right at the time the boobengrabber was in power.
At home, I was in the midst of caring for a dying parent, so being able to do some local radio as well as continuing to do lots of shows on KGO gave me some life outside the challenging task of elder care. I was very thankful for it. I think Randi Rhodes is also immensely talented. I also had a blast with Mort Downey on his national show out of WWOR..What a card!

  9. Christine, I have listened to you for years, and always perk up when you fill in on KGO. Your common sense, well thought-out topics and love of animals make you number one in my book and, judging by your callers, the favorite of many listeners.

Karel is amusing, but you are the real deal. And the ONLY reason I listen to KGO!
