Former KPIX Sports Anchor Jan Hutchins Enjoying Life In The South Bay

Jan Hutchins --remember him? The former KPIX sports anchor checks in with a nice spring greeting --he's now living comfortably and CEO of a Social Agenda business in Silicon Valley.

You may recall Hutchins tag line: The Body Is the Temple of the Spirit.

Looks as if life is good.

  1. Jan was smart to get out of broadcasting inthe late 1980s, well before the profession fell into such disrepute. Jan has always been a visionary but was also put off by the seamy side of the business. I worked with him briefly in the 80s, and he was a classy, friendly, interesting person who really was much too smart for the venal profession of broadcasting. Yet at the same time, it's too bad so many of the people who are PDs, GMs. and their ilk have, over the years, been dysfunctional, petty, morally bankrupt louses! They drive good folks who were great broadcasters such as Jan Hutchins to distraction and many others are driven out of the profession by their stupid antics. Now on top of that, we have deregulation, downsizing, and the dumbing down of the media, brought ab out by naked greed which has afflicted this once great country, turning the clock backward to the 'Gilded Age' when robber barons ran this country in the latter years of the 19th century. Why would anyone want to work for a bunch of nit-wit, dumm-dumm former sales guys who wouldn't know a microphone from a stick of wood?

  2. I like how he takes credit for getting AT&T Ballpark built.

    1. I've heard that Ralpharoo Barbieri has also taken credit for getting that ballpark built. Seems Peter Magowan has become the forgotten man; he was "only" the key player in keeping the team here and making the ballpark dream a reality.

  3. I can see he admires Nelson Mandela as much as Mark Jackson MLK.
It's bust everybody's bubble and fantasy world day!

  4. Let me just say, as part of the late seventies KPIX team of Andrew Hill, Jan Hutchins and moi ( creme filling in the oreo cookie), Jan had and still has a great body housing a great spirit. I remember the bosses used to flinch when he delivered that sign-off. He was absolutely right!

    1. I don't know to whom you are referring. Are you saying I'm a sexist or Jan is? It is not sexist to comment favorably on the physical agility and soulfulness of a person of a different sex. The "body is the temple of the spirit" bit applied to everyone, not just one sex or another, and it still does. You see, whether you are male or female, exercise and respect for your physical and spiritual realities is a good thing. Now go stare down at your smartass phone and get a double chin.

    2. Reading Christine's comment is a fresh reminder of how unfailingly obnoxious she is.

Happily, she hasn't been commenting here as much as she used to and I'd like to mention how delightful her absence has been.

I'm speaking for many when expressing my heart-felt appreciation for her absence and look forward to it's resumption.

    3. Tell us about the "many" you speak for. Wouldn't that qualify as a delusion of grandeur? Why would you be so disturbed that I made a comment about someone I know and worked with? Have you ever met Jan Hutchins? BTW, while you ponder that..."it's resumption" makes no sense. Do you know why? Ask an adult.

    4. Christine, then, go tell that to your guy Karel. He needs your therapy desperately. I dare you to try because while I agree with much of your comment, I am amazed you would say this and let your hackneyed and on the wrong side of history friend get away with what venom he unleashed. "Sprit" of the body, indeed. He needs help in many departments of "Life". He needs more than a gym membership.

    5. Aren't you more than a little old(forty-ish) to still be affecting the angst ridden young man syndrome? BTW, "heartfelt" is one word, not hyphenated.

    6. The absence of Christine's peevish grammar hectoring was one of the things we enjoyed most while she was gone. Also there's the delightfully self-importing name-dropping. She's actually met Jan Hutchins! OMG!

Sadly, being a great grammarian didn't help Christine get into a decent law school. The 2015 US News and World Report rankings of law schools was just released and Christine's law school, University of the Pacific, McGeorge, ranked DEAD LAST, 146th of 146 ranked law schools.

Christine went to that place? That's the best she could do? And she's so good at punctuation.

    8. I can only speak for myself but I didn't miss Christine. Reading her comments here today reminds me how how plain unlikeable she is.

  5. While the Body Is the Temple of the Spirit. ... That is an interesting tagline. Fwiw, traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes the point that the jing (chemical essence) in the body develops the qi. The qi cultivates the spirit.
Great Post. ... Rich ... You are the best. .. Your readers should praise your opinions. When will the TV recognize your greatness and give you your own TV show?

  7. Jan is a good dude and an 'old soul' who always has a fresh and positive approach to life. His input on TV doing the sports locally would be a breath of fresh air, compared to the stale work of Ibanez, Fonzi, Beal, Schumann, Radnich, and O'Connell. The only one who currently has a little of Jan's positive and enthusiastic spirit is Vernon Glenn, who has always been unappreciated but is one of the hardest working people in local on-air TV sports. He shoots and edits all of his own video, which is what you used to have to do if you worked in a small market. Vern knew he had to do it again to survive, and being a 'jack of all trades,' has kept him employed and in front of the camera as well.

    1. He is and always was a font of good energy. Apparently there are some here who hate that fact or the recognition of it.

  8. I like Christine's commentary on radio, but can't stand her voice.

Although, Christine's voice is not nearly as annoying as the shrill Pat Thurston.

  9. 4:11...your odd fixation over where I went to law school is amusing. I think , instead of looking for law school rankings in 2015, you should call California's former Attorney General and tell him he went to the wrong school. I graduated and passed the cal bar in the mid-nineties when I was fifty. Your school was what, exactly?. I'm guessing you couldn't survive the first month and the first round of exams at McGeorge, or anywhere else. Did that low LSAT score crush your dreams?

Another guess here about voices. This is probably a fellow whose wife drives him nuts. The only female voice he can stand is a silent one. My voice has worked for me, both in broadcasting at every level and as a collegiate speaker. Anyone can eliminate the "shrill" in their voices with a few good voice lessons, learning to breathe, properly.

    1. Christine, are you saying you were too old to get into a decent law school? You mean age discrimination? You should have sued them too. Undoubtedly the same unsuccessful result.

  10. The question isn't whether or not Christine passed the California state bar exam. The question is why, with her superb grammar skills, she wasn't able to gain admittance to a better law school. Her school is ranked dead last on the latest list.

Apparently being a grammar know-it-all doesn't have much to do with intelligence. Maybe it's just a way for the intellectually insecure to flaunt their imaginary superiority over others.

In spite of all your other limitations Christine, you're a great at punctuation.

  11. While all of this fascination with Christine and her inane comments and opinions? Just because she's worked in the media, she seems to think she knows everything. I will say this however; at least Christine has worked in the profession. The nit-wit who calls himself 'STAN' and doesn't seem to know how to write a sentence in the proper fashion is really an embarrassment! Why do you keep printing his posts Rich? The guy has nothing of any value to say, and he's a crackpot to boot. Do you think he's pithy or funny or something else? Most of the time I read a reaction from other posters, they're either really weary of him, or like me, think he's out on hios own private island somewhere So too a degree is Christine, who is so infatuated with herself and her experience and knowledge, that she comes at anyone who disagrees with her like an attack dog. Here's a good idea Rich: Get the two of them together to do a 'face-off' on your blog. Now that might be mildly amusing!
