Sarah and Vinnie on Alice; Alex Bennett; KGO-TV's Unintentional Weather Sensation; The Gary Radnich Rope-a-Dope; Wednesday Media PM Diner

Contrary to what some of you might think, I don't have any issues with Alice Radio's "Sarah and Vinnie", it's just that if you're going to hit me, I'll hit you right back.

I don't listen to the show. I tried. It's basically a bad copy of Alex Bennett without husband and wife, although pain in ass he was and is, Bennett's show was significantly superior than these castaways.

The only reason why I mentioned them to begin with was word from a mole inside the building that Vinnie was internally pouting that he was pissed she was getting far more money. He should be so lucky. She drives the show and he's the guy in the back seat. The forced and contrived sexual innuendo bits sounds, well, forced and contrived.

*KGO-TV's back in business at its news studio at 900 Front but so far, the weather reports continue to emanate from atop the building at the Embarcadero which I like. Unintentional or not, it looks a helluva lot better with the Bay Bridge in the background and get this, actual weather you can see! If it's rainout outside, the weather guessers can actually say it's raining!

*The Gary Radnich Rope-a-Dope: When Gary does a straight interview on radio, (or even TV on KRON for that matter), nobody's better. Nobody. And sure, when it's boring and the sports minutiae is too much to take, he's better than OK doing the Don Rickles bit it's just that when there needs to be a semblance of seriousness and you get Rickles you begin to get frustrated. Like you, enough man, stick to sports and be real. I call it the Radnich rope-a-dope. It worked better for Ali.

*Every other female reporter at KTVU is new. What does that tell you? Although I like Rasmus, Moriarty, and Rendon especially.

  1. Every other female reporter at KTVU is new because the place is a complete revolving door. This is the state of media these days. Nobody sticks around. Nobody can.

  2. Rich, what do you think of Alicia the number two wife? Did the first Mrs. Raddy die?

  4. I know you say terrestrial radio in the Bay Area is a slowly deflating balloon, never to be pumped again to it's former Hindenberg hot air glory, but I had a career question anyway. Are there any local (Marin Area) radio stations that would allow for untrained adult internships? I have a fairly good speaking voice, but I'm a bit shy with public speaking, and need practice. For that I suppose I could try another Toastmaster's Club when I build up the nerve. While I am working on my voice, or thinking about it, I would like to learn about helping to produce a show. I have a f/t job working for disabled adults. I'm busy, but would like to enhance my skill set as I get older. Yes, I'm 57 y/o, so I wont be any 'aspiring rapper, not that I consider most of that as music. So, Rich, do you know of any stations willing to train a non technical person in a way to assist with the production of radio programs. I have a degree in Fine Arts, but am still unfamiliar with most computer graphics. I just think it would be interesting and even fun. I don't expect you to name drop here. I'm only asking about the likely hood that such volunteer jobs are out there.

    1. I don't know about Marin county but KPFA in Berkeley has a free apprenticeship program. The application deadline is in a couple of weeks. They teach you a lot about radio including programming. Their hosts and programming is much more interesting than places like KSFO and KGO for example.

    2. Thank You Mr. 9.20 PM. I will act on this info tomorrow, when the sun reappears!
Most likely this KPFA is very Liberal, but, for this kind of training and perhaps making new friends, I will keep my mind open for learning and my mouth shut about politcal teams. Some of my best friends are liberal, or, like myself, have been Progressive at one time in their lives, so I can still enjoy the person inside.

    3. You might want to check out the website for KWMR, "community radio" for West Marin:

      http://www.kwmr.org/app/section?name=volunteer

It looks like they need volunteers for various administrative tasks (but also entertain proposals for DIY on-air programming). Might be a good place to at least hang-out while doing something useful, and picking up some skills/knowledge about radio.

I have no special knowledge of the station (and don't even live in Marin) but it is one of the eclectic out-in-the-boondocks stations I occasionally like to listen to streaming online.

  5. Though only an occasional consumer of sports talk, I've lived enough years to recognize that something I often detect during a Gary Radnich interview to be unique to him, and that something is resentment. I've heard blowhards, sycophants, lightweights and even a few heavy-hitters, but only GR feels obliged to inform his audience -- sometimes subtly, sometimes not -- of his guest's motivation (what he's promoting). GR wants to make sure to let his listeners in on something of which he has apparently learned to resent, that being that sports celebrities don't submit to interviews because they're good sports.

And exactly how that serves his audience I don't know. GR, whose own willingness to share his wares with us on air begins and ends with his paycheck, seems hell bent on doing his part to relieve the public of its penchant for admiring high-paid athletes. His resentment (jealousy?), no doubt fueled by decades of poor treatment by conceited and inconsiderate jocks, may be justified as a personal feeling, but it makes for annoying radio.

    4. I found your post both long-winded and misguided.

There's no reason to criticize GR because he informs his audience the real reason a "guest" has agreed to be interviewed. Intelligent listeners benefit from understanding the guests motivation.

Arse Nardmann is unhappy that GR is unwilling to "share his wares with us on air." Boohoo. If you want to share his wares Arse, perhaps you should contact him directly, not sure that belongs on radio.

    5. "There's no reason to criticize"

Seriously, are you not aware that blogs like this exist because people have differing opinions? Are you so delusional as to believe that "no reason" exists for others to criticize anything about someone you happen to like? Also, I said nothing in my post about being "unhappy," which raises questions your reading comprehension.

If you're being paid to defend GR you're being overpaid; if you're doing it for free I suggest you swallow hard and apologize to GR for your ineptitude.

  7. Well I think the rooftop weather is a lame gimmick that has worn out its welcome. It was interesting a bit at first but they ran it into the ground. You really don't learn a darn thing with that rooftop shot. Now if there's just a cloud in the sky they are up on the roof. It does nothing to enhance the weather forecast. If they want to really make a statement, get a truck and put the weather guesser at Ocean Beach. Then at least you have something to show.

  8. Radnich wants so bad to be known as loveable..he can't go two days in row without telling the audience " I have a big heart". If you HAVE to tell people that? Then you really don't.
His schtick has worn out on Jackie. He had the nerve to tell her,he would rather be thought of as "good looking" in person rather then just on air, like her. Her jaw dropped a bit and she told him "How rude". Pam smiled and laughed. She always does,no matter what he says..smiles and laughs. She has some personal issues he takes advantage of. Obvious and very clear. His right hand wanders all over her..again. Never does it "absentmindedly" with his left I notice. Never.

    2. When I worked there he shot his fat mouth off and said something very insulting to Vicki Liviakis once. (I forget what, but it was rude and mean-spirited.) To make things worse, Vicki's mom was visiting the set that day and saw it all. Afterwards he was seen on the phone, presumably talking to someone in management (it was after hours, so they were all home) and then, shortly after that, he was humbly, HUMBLY apologizing to Vicki...the humblest I've ever seen that pile of lard. Frankly, I'd have fired him--name or not. He's a pig.

    3. I always thought Gary was a lush. He doesn't even give the sports scores he has to toss in his opinion on everything. Who gives a shit what Gary says. Jackie is cute. Blonde nice body big busted. Not my type I like Brunettes but she is a good looking lady.

Plus Gary has a mug built for Radio. Ahhhh Marone is that guy hideous!

    4. Radnich does not drink.
Calling him "hideous" and saying he has a mug built for radio ignores the fact he's been on television for the past 20+ years been a major local television personality for decades.

      You are probabl

That you have LOTS of work to do, learning bust sizes, hotness ratings, etc., all the while praising them for their "gutsy" reporting, most of which is actually done by writers/desk editors back at the station who don't have double-D's.

  10. Radnich is at his best interviewing Baer, Lacob, DeBartolo, York and other big personalities. I think they trust him that they will not get blindsided. Love him or hate him, on big interviews he excels and gets the guest to offer informative answers.

  11. Agree with the Radnich assessment.
The minute the program gets into some semblance of serious talk he goes into his numbskull comedy routine. And as a result it is hard to take him serious on any subject. No credibility.
Always in his Mr Comedy mode.

  12. Too bad youse guys weren't listening to Knibber @ 9:16a Wednesday. Gary mentioned Mr. Lieberman and this blog by name at least a couple of times and said he respects Rich and basically understands Rich has to "call it like he sees it".

Didn't sound like he was patronizing Rich but rather making a larger point about how people labelled as "difficult", like some sports personalities are, actually are coming from a place of personal integrity.

Seriously? Radnich is arrogant and used to park his Bentley behind Restaurants alleys and engage with prostitutes that turned out to be Lady Boyz. He had a thing like Teddy Pendergass had for that tranny. Raddy is fond of Pam Moore and was thrilled that he could talk a young KNBR apprentice like Alicia into marrying him even though she's 17 years younger.

Radnich was looking for a trophy bride to show off around Pam Moore and all the other 'sista's, but his proclivity for Bentley back seat bromances with lady-boyz is still heavy in his heart.

  15. Radnich has been successful here because he reflects the Bay Area view of sports. Being a local guy, he gets it. We're not some Midwest city, fawning over sports stars, spending our lives arguing sports' minutia, or emotionally investing in losing teams. He captures that perfectly. It's the reason out of towners fail here, they don't understand us. We're a sophisticated (somewhat snobby) bunch when it comes to sports. Radnich's sarcastic take on the over importance of media and sports for sure rubs insiders the wrong way, but for me is a refreshing take on things compared to the typical drivel. Yes, he goes overboard and has a big ego, but on balance, when I want a mature response to an issue in sports, his view is one of the few on the air that I respect.
