Giants have priority of 49ers on KNBR because it brings them more scratch. Longer season, more games, more ads and way more people tuning in for baseball than for football. Rich you should know this.
Either way, too much conflict of interest. That's why you can't utter a bad word about the Giants on KNBR. And since KNBR's owners seem to own nearly every goddamn radio station in town, be damned if you say anything critical about the team. It's not right. What happened to freedom of speech?
Notice that few voiced their real opinions when Duane Kuiper was touted as a Baseball Hall of Fame candidate? Seriously? Duane Kuiper? What the hell has he done? Meanwhile Bill King gets treated like dirt. Seriously?
I'd like to tell the Giants to go grab some pine, meat.
Baer and Co. have the Warriors by the short and curlies now that their Pier 31-33 arena plans have gone kaput. If the Warriors want a sexy waterfront Arena they will have to partner with the Giants. W's best hurry before the Giants apply for permits to develop Lot A.
No question, Larry Baer can get what he wants out of KNBR because over 50 percent of KNBR's sales come from the Giants' broadcasts, so they don't want to alienate their number one client, When Larry Kruger ripped the Giants in 2005 and called their hitters "Brain dead Caribbeans" it was Larry Baer who first put the pressure on GM Tony Salvadore to do something about it, and eventually Krueger, his producer and Program Director Bob Agnew were all fired.
The Giants are obviously an important part of KNBR's programming and financial success and appropriately have a great deal of influence at the station.
Is there supposed to be something wrong or surprising about that?
KNBR's endless bloviating about the Giants made me hate baseball and ultimately switch to another station. It was like listening to a bad eight month long infomercial with the same five or six story lines that never change (Can Timmy come back?) Brian Murphy and Marty Lurie are particularly annoying and fans should not care about a team more than the players do. This is not a criticism of the players, but they are like your dog - they are a part of your life because you are giving them something. All the Giants worship seems kinda sad and creepy.
What exactly is Lieberman complaining about? Seems like he's angry that the Giants and KNBR are both successful organizations. Others' success offends Rich Lieberman.
And you can add SF Chron's sports page also. It couldn't be more obvious who sleeps with the Giants including the editor Al Saracevic. You cant post any Giant opinions on that paper. They wont let you. Post something about Lincecum's eating disorder..you are blocked and banned. The Giants might as well be the Mafia of the city... I mean, that whole thing of owning the sports page to the weird Milk Men fiasco and woman.. hired by Greg Papa? shows the length of the tentacles grip of the Giant squid!

ReplyDeleteRich you should know this.
I do, so what.
DeleteAnd yes, the Giants make a lot of money for KNBR, hence my post on who has keys to the kingdom at 55 Hawthorne.
Not as much money as you think; do you have any idea what Cumulus is paying in rights fees?

I am huge Bill King fan, but when exactly was he "treated like dirt?" I have never heard anyone on the air say anything bad about King.
DeleteAgree with 10:15. Seems that Bill King is always talked up, never hear anything negative. Who is "treating him like dirt"?

ReplyDeleteAny news on what Isabelle Lemon is doing these days?
ReplyDeleteOr Bob Agnew?
Or Tony Salvatore?
Or Cass Centeno?
Dennis Cruz or John London?
Thanks Rich!
This is right on! And it's disgusting.
ReplyDeleteDoes KNBR and or Comcast own a part of the Giants or other way around?
ReplyDeleteYou can throw in the SF Chronicle as well Rich.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, if my job depended on positive press for the Giants, I would not rock the boat either.
Agnew with station in Anaheim...carries the angels...salvadore retired...lemon retired...I recall knbr owning 5% of Giants...Comcast may be same.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants are obviously an important part of KNBR's programming and financial success and appropriately have a great deal of influence at the station.

The fact that KNBR has no journalistic credibility when it come to the Giants?
DeleteYes, Rich hates everything SF Giants or Niners.
Deleteand listeners couldn't care less.
