KPIX5's Da Lin: Reporter of the Day

Da Lin/CBS photo

Feared. Relentless and ruthless. He's a walking embodiment of the mantra: never give in. Never.

"I don't mess with the guy and neither will anyone else. He's not the person you want to give the impression you're screwing with.", offered a local industry wag.

Other notes: Lin knows the ropes around town. He had a stint at KRON too.

We here at 415 Media appreciate the presence of Da Lin. Always have--always will.

  1. Glad to see you come around on Da Lin. You used to ridicule him when he was at KRON-- when you were critical of Video Journalists.

  2. I do not think Da is very good and did not understand his hiring by KPIX. He is still an
amateur and has not given a lengthy "live" report that I've seen. He will begin his report
on location (live), but then go to recorded copy and come back (live) to close. LIVE shots are the measuring sticks for field reporters. He has a long way to go to be mentioned in the same conversation as Amy Hollyfield (KGO) and Tara Moriarty (KTVU)

    1. What the hell are you talking about? I WORK in the industry and that is not how it's done at all. Live shots, unless the reporter just got there and didn't get a chance to get video yet or there's no video to get because the scene is sealed off. If there's some time but not a lot the photog will get video and feed it back to the station while the writer cuts it (yes, writers do most of the cutting now, as they've laid off most of the editors to save a buck) and takes notes for a script from the reporter at the scene. In best-case scenarios when there is a lot of time and the story isn't a breaker the reporter has time to, along with the photog, assemble a package.

Whether Da or any other reporter does it one way or the other or the other has nothing to do with their "measuring stick." The nature of the story and how much time till air dictates the format. And I've seen Da do all three types.

How do I know this? This is what I do for a living, that's how.

You're trying to act like you know what you're talking about, but it's laughable.

    2. Oh, and by the way, Amy Hollyfield is a nightmare and a disorganized prima donna. I've worked with her too and every writer at KGO hates her. Back when Anne Makovec and she were the two morning reporters, the writers on duty would each beg to be assigned with AM that day, but alas only one writer could get that gig. Tara I've never worked with and know nothing about.

    3. Thanks for the input Da, but you really shouldn't rip Amy. You should watch and learn.

    4. @4:55 Da Lin has always looked young, but he's far from an amateur. I worked with him many years ago before he started working in the San Francisco market. Da is not only a smart and creative reporter, he's nice to work with and a nice person in general. People who are critical of him, have obviously never met him.

    5. Yes, Da Lin does look young. But his moves are, for the most part, professional. To those who have repeatedly surmised that he may, therefore, be a vampire, perhaps I should remind you that this is not a proven fact.

YOU watch and learn. I worked with her.

  3. I knew Da Lin when he was at KRON. He's a solid reporter and a great guy. He may be young, but I predict a long, successful career for him.

    1. If you're talking about 4:55 not only does he not work in TV, I don't think he even watches it with much attention.

    2. Have to agree with 4:55. Da is a work in progress. What are you watching?

  5. "Feared"! Lol!!
Who's afraid of that skinny nebish? What does he weigh? 110 lbs before applying gel to his hair and 112.5 lbs after applying the gel?

    1. I suspect this is a quid pro quo piece on Da for being a mole.

If I was a news boss and had a problem with loose lips from an insider, I'd start my search by looking at Rich's "preferred" list". If the snitches and rats put as much effort into work as they doing gossiping, we'd have some news worth watching.

    2. I laughed because I was basically thinking the same thing earlier but thought, "if you don't have anything nice to say..."

    3. It has been reported that Bruce Lee weighed 160 pounds at his heaviest, and he could Kung Fu just about anyone's ass into the hospital (or worse)!

  7. Feared? When he worked at KRON he was ruffed up out on the street one night....

  8. He seems like a nice young man and a capable reporter. But his delivery needs some serious attention. He has an end-of-sentence vocal tic that causes his voice to drop into the inaudible range. Often I miss the last word or two of most sentences. Voice lessons are indicated.

    1. Agree re: his delivery. He often looks down or away from the camera when he
is talking. I assume he's focusing on putting his words together, but it's unprofessional

    2. Am I too late? I've paid attention to your two comments. I think he simply runs out of breath. Breathing exercises are indicated.

  9. Hey, Rich, in your ongoing list of things you hate about TV news, how about when they play 911 tapes. These usually contain people screaming, maybe dying on the line as the recording is made. Clearly the stations play them for sensationalism--although of course they always warn you "This may be disturbing and you may not want to listen." Translation: LISTEN! LISTEN! LISTEN! The hypocrisy here makes me sick. You can reveal what is on the tapes without playing to the world the last painful moments on earth of innocent victims.

  10. Da LiN aint No 'Kiet Do' or 'Will Tran' its like Now in 2013 Bay News Stations treat these Asian Field Reporters like the 'New Black Reporter' Sending them to all the Hoods white reporters would probably not fit right in. Da Lin is an ok Reporter but more for a college or high school TV Station. But when he shows up at a press release with CBS credentials then stands their with a innocent look holding the mic i see how he can be a CBS5 Secret weapon. I prefer Will Tran tho , his style is more sharp. The Number of Asian Journalist in the BAY is higher then most other markets around the country probably due to the fact of the High Asian Population in the Bay and the Competing Asian News .

  11. @6:42 - agreed. Da should be an anchor. Because that's what you meant, right? You weren't trying to be an ugly, uninformed racist were you?
