I remember that song to this day, showing a swan going to sleep. In fact, I loved the piece enough to hunt for it at Amoeba's in Berkeley. I still hold the CD. There is no one I could talk to about it. Also on the album I got is the KYRIE by Giovanne Pierlugigi da Palestrina, Gregorian chants by a children's choir, plus adult bass. Both pieces spoken of here are what I call 'heartbreakingly heavenly'. Yes! I'm a man who likes refined, beautiful music and I'm not ashamed to say it.
And no disrespect to you, L. Ron Hedgehog, or to the great Hank Mancini, but I listened to that HM YouTube clip and John Williams' music wins this horserace going away.
And boy howdy, I sure missed JW's Superman music in "Man Of Steel" earlier this summer!
Sorry, but the opening of Beethoven's Ninth Second Movement was the best NBC (or any network) news theme of all time. Get's your attention and lets you know someone ...usually either Huntley or Brinkley... are about to tell you something important.
That's pretty cool
ReplyDeleteEXCELLENT!
ReplyDeleteI was always more partial to the CBC Nightly News. When I was a kid Little did I know I was watching a communist.
ReplyDeleteNo disrespect Rich, but in my opinion THIS theme was the best written.

KRON had the best sign-off in the 60's and 70's. B/W with Faure's Pavane.

DeleteThanks Rick. I was excited hearing and seeing the whole thing. I wanted to run out and watch the news RIGHT NOW.
DeleteVERY COOL, Rich.
ReplyDelete@2:50 and @Rich...I have to disagree with you both. The best news intro of all time was ...

Yes the NBC News theme song is very good.
ReplyDeleteOther theme songs worth remembering are
theme to The 20th Century and CBS Reports.
NBC should play this in its entirety every so often - especially after 30 minutes of depressing news.
ReplyDeleteI notice both Henry Mancini and John Williams thought it proper to pay homage to the ticker tape. Nice.
ReplyDeleteOne more nominee, this in respect to David Frost:

That was my favorite as well. Huntley, Brinkley, and later John Chancellor!
