New Bay Bridge Looks/Feels Nice; Bruce Macgowan; KNBR's Larry Krueger and Ray Woodson; Quick Saturday Media Notes

 Saturday Quick Media Notes...

*You want irony? The new Bay Bridge looks and feels wonderful. Especially coming back to Oakland the views and the straight-away are great. On the old cantilever section you could hardly see the bay. I just hope to god there's no big quake on the new structure. Sorry, I worry, it's a constant in the family.

*My condolences to Bay Area sports radio reporter/anchor, Bruce Macgowan on the recent passing of his father.

*KNBR's Larry Krueger on the 49ers pre-game show: quality work, loads of useful information, nice pacing and a boatload of enthusiasm. Furthermore, Krueger isn't shy to criticize the home team if it is warranted. That's good.
I've had issues with Krueger in the past but as time has passed, his work on both pro and college football is first-rate. Beyond that, his preparation is evident and he does his homework. Huzzah.

*Speaking of KNBR, I like nighttime host, Ray Woodson. There is something unique and quality-driven about an interesting broadcaster whose wry sense of humor and sports acumen makes it a pleasure to listen to--Woodson is right up there with the best of 'em.

  1. I do like Larry and Ray. I like Gary as well. Listen to the 3 of them often.

I never listen to Murph and Mack. Can't stand the forced excitement/let's act like we're hip and high school when were 25 years removed.

NEVER listen to Fitz and Brooks. It's just bland radio. No better word I can use to describe it than bland. I can tolerate Brooks at times, not so much Fitz.

I do enjoy Damon when he's not so obnoxious.

  2. Sounds like somebody got up on the right side of the bed this morning...for a change!

Seriously though, the worst case EQ scenario on the new bridge is better than the whole range of likely scenarios on the old bridge. I haven't driven the new span yet, but am looking forward to it. I think the signature-design/landmark idea was a good one, though I would also have been happy to call it the "Larry Ellison Bridge" in exchange for a spare few billion.

  3. A new troll was made for the bridge, perhaps people are looking for it and that's why folks are going ridiculously slow. Save the sight seeing for Sunday mornings. Please.

Worrying AKA ~ negative goal setting.

  4. Agree with you on Woodson. He is the only one left on KNBR that I will still listen to. Sorry to hear of the passing of Macgowan's father. Speaking of Macgowan, does anyone know if he is on the radio anywhere?

  5. Quite a game last night; the post game interviews were interesting as well; on the field, Amy G. (the G is for grating) used an interpreter to talk to Petit. In the Chronicle, the story also used an interpreter, yet, KPIX sent Joe Vasquez to talk to Petit and they did their thing in English...surmising that Comcast and the Chron wanted in depth answers; still, Yusmeiro's accented English is very understandable ...sometimes English is tough for Amy G.; last week she said she was doing a feature on Buster, actually Buster's "butter hoff". It wasn't about his favorite dessert, it was about Mrs. Posey

  7. I've said all the time..even if I didn't know of 2005, I'm still impressed at how wrong Kreuger can be. Great stats finder I admit..I've posted that. But his sports acumen is terrible. Every stand he's taken has been wrong. On players "LeBron is a loser" and then LeBron wins his second straight title. Kreuger loves to gamble. His record last year was 75- 130~ or so. He wanted to sign Zito in mid summer..Zito tanked. Never trade Monta he said, and then "A bad trade"... And that's just a couple of three examples.

Again, you can educate people, but you can't make them smart.

    1. Hey Stan, I thought you left in a huff or were expelled by Rich. You certainly haven't been missed.

What happened, that blog of yours not attracting anyone? Gee, that's a shock.

    3. Yeah, the bots must love you.

No human beings ever comment because no human beings read your repetitive "I hate Gary Radnich" drivel.

    4. Stanley Roberts posted on my blog..and I have a few regulars and if you are claiming that 14,000 bot visits..then your insane. Sure, they make up a certain percentage..but popular posts out do regular by many times. You think bots pick and choose? Or people?.
Oh,well I know you wont ever agree..but thanks for letting me brag.

  8. Although I think the bridge flaws are serious, I'm sure I'm like many people..I can't wait to see it tonight as I come in to fill for Karel on KGO! I'm sure I'll be taking pix, just like a tourist.I've been working hard on a project involving a bizarre murder case, and will be discussing with my guests at 9p. What an opportunity!

It felt like old home week for this former fan of KGO. You were in fine form.

  9. Thanks for the kind thoughts Rich. My dad was a fighter pilot during WWII in the Pacific, as he flew P-38s, and then he was in the occupational force in Japan after the war. He had a wonderful life, living to the ripe old age of 93.

Dad was an architect after the war and he designed and built the house he and my mom lived in for the next 55 years.

As far as radio goes, I am still doing some fill in work on KGO radio and am now also doing San Rafael Pacifics, (Minor League baseball), and local Marin county High School football on an internet radio station in San Rafael (bggg101.com). We do two games (Friday night and Saturday afternoon0 each weekend.

Are you related to the Hollywood producer from the 30s and 40s with the name of Kenneth Macgowan?

  10. Enjoy Ray Woodson very much. One of the few on air hosts who actually speaks English. He is able to speak in complete sentences.

  11. Kenneth Macgowan was my dad's father. He produced many well known movies in the 1930s and 40s including 'Young Mr. Lincoln,' with Henry Fonda, 'Little Women' with Katherine Hepburn, and Alfred Hitchcock's 'Lifeboat' with Telullah Bankhead.

He also wrote several books on the movies and theater and later became the Chairman of the Theater/Arts Department at UCLA.
