Labor Day 2013: A Few Things To Get Off My Chest; CalTrans And the Bay Media Players; Nuggets Galore

  **Labor Day 2013**

I remember the time that this day was a big affair with the politicians in the Bay Area; they used to hold court at the Alameda County fair and kibbutz with other pols and make speeches at the BBQ with the masses.

*That big shot news exec in the Battery gulch whose rep continues to take a hit should realize that no matter how much he tells his staff to stay clear of me the more I know. And I know. One day, soon, we will all know.

*If there were ever a good time to 'splain yourself, at least low key, the KRON hottie and her well-known suitor would do best to come forward now. Word's out.

*Is there a Bay Bridge-Caltrans Update? Haven't heard one in at least 5 minutes. If not for Caltrans, what would the local lemmings have reported on? Fact is, I have NEVER seen so much NON-NEWS being put forth by so many enablers this weekend. One of the funnier moments: on Saturday, KCBS cut into the Caltrans PR guy holding a "briefing" on the status of the work on the eastern portion of the new bridge. As he finished, the station then ran a report with the same PR guy repeating what he had just said only seconds before. Incredible. Complete amateur hour. Can you all get us real news?

*Another fraud: How much you wanna bet the bridge opens later this evening and NOT at 5 AM tomorrow? I just love this pre-staged drama with "reporters" working part and parcel with Caltrans about an artificial opening. We've been down this road before. Complete utter fools. And some of you gullible consumers, I guess they think you buy all this shit.

*I'd like an update on the new toilets and plumbing near the toll plaza--and can we see more pompous "reporters" with the hard hats on? Splendid. All of you, such heroes. Maybe you ought remember back in '89 when there was real news--the bridge was actually CLOSED for over a month. That was real NEWS, as opposed to this garbage spewed forth by the local carnival barkers known as "press" people. Ha Ha!

*The Rim Fire: sounds kind of pornographic.

*KTVU GM and ND are praying this week passes without a meeting from the big suits in Atlanta. The more time, the better.

*BREAKING NEWS!!: Caltrans and KPIX just announced that the asphalt inside the tunnel would be the subject of a new, exclusive special to be aired directly after the bridge opening: It's called the "Rosenheim Black Mud Chronicles", not to be confused with Dan's nights on the town in Danville.

*I don't really give a damn what some of 'yous think or spin: the KGO Radio ND/Assistant/whatever? First off, KGO never really had a ND--that would assume KGO really cares about news or vice-versa. She was manipulated to the point where they wanted her to leave. So go ahead, staffers, spin it anyway you want. She was bounced out the door --and I'm glad she's going to teach. Maybe she could do a lecture too: "Cumulus: What the fuck was I thinking?"

**We have an UPDATE from the Bay Bridge: The new bike lane will have a corner bar at the incline. All reporters on scene will be given a guided tour complete with Bloody Marys and Mimosas --you'll need a badge to enter unless your name is Dan Rosenheim.

  1. Do you ever just give your brain a rest? You must be exhausted thinking so much. Take the day off. Don't read any newspapers. No TV.
No radio. Just relax. You deserve a break today!

    1. Why don't you go flush your head down the toilet and I'll relax, only then.

    2. Such hostility. Maybe the radio job isn't for you. Maybe sign language for the hearing impaired would help. You're not funny. You're not entertaining.
Consider joining the circus. They always need someone to sweep up the elephants.

    4. @12:38 He's not entertaining....yet you come to this website. You read the posts. You listen to the radio show. Over and over apparently based on your working knowledge of how he composes himself here and on the radio.

Here's an idea...stop visiting and stop listening?

      But you can't. You're hooked.

You can apologize to Rich now.

    5. Lieberman's Live is the best show on the radio. No ifs ands or buts. Better than all bar none.

  3. Why is Rich Lieberman SO angry that a massive civic project is about to be completed, on time, and local media is covering the monumental event?

It's news, it should be covered, and it's hard to understand what Mr. Lieberman so darn unhappy about it.

    3. Completed on time??? Now THAT is funny. The Big Dig in Boston was completed on time by the same logic. Once again, political expediency wins out over public safety and a job well done. Galvanized bolts that can break under very high load in a marine environment? Corroded tendons in the new span's skyway viaduct? Flawed welds in the base of its tower? No problem with the foundation piles Caltrans says -- our quality assurance folks insured everything is good. Oops, that's the guy that falsified his data. Well done Caltrans.

Oh hell, it's safer than the old span!!

    4. "On time"? Really? Seriously? Next you'll be saying it was on budget too!

I think Rich's pot shots are for the most part silly--especially his crack about it using Chinese steel. What, KTVU's slipup was unforgivably racist but reaming the Bay Bridge by point out it's made with Chinese steel isn't?? What proof do you have the Chinese can't make good steel? Are they just inferior people with slanty little eyes who say, "Ho Lee Fuk!"? That's pretty inflammatory. China recently opened a bridge span very similar to the Bay Bridge, about a year or so ago. They built in something like 13 months what it's taken us 13 years to build. No problems with theirs so far. I don't know what the means for ours, but I certainly wouldn't automatically connect a problem with it just because it's built with "Chinese steel."

  4. I know of a traffic reporter on a Sacramento station who, when mentioning delays because of the Rim Fire, slipped up and called it the Rim Job Fire. Luckily it was late on a weekend and nobody has appeared to have caught it (a week has gone by) but your remark about how it sounds naughty reminded me of that.

  5. In no way was Gina fired at all, nor forced to leave. In fact the station definitely wanted her to stay since she's a qualified News Director being paid "Assistant" ND wages. That's the Cumulus way!

Gina has to be ecstatic she found a job outside of Cumulus.

You could say she was "forced" to leave based on future opportunity and pay. Essentially, every single person who works at Cumulus is being "forced" to leave because there's no way to have a real career working there, and live in the Bay Area.

  6. KCBS tripping over themselves to give you a story on the Bay Bridge opening. Sadly a story we have heard many times.
But at KCBS our mantra is repeating a story multiple times during the day.

    1. What do you think they should be reporting today?

"Sadly a story we have heard many times before"??? A really stupid comment. News is repetitive. If you stay tuned to KCBS all day, you're going to hear the same thing over and over again. My suggestion, change the station.

As for "sadly", what's so sad about it? The new bridge is opening. That's positive news, not sad news.

This Lieberman theme of criticizing whatever the mass media is doing is tiresome and foolish.

    1. I be wrong. He had returned early from seeing the in-laws and had it on the official schedule..but was a no-show...something the old Jerry wouldn't have missed, especially on Labor Day.

      Delete
    2. Well, that one turned out wrong. Although he certainly should have been. Why was that even a "prediction"?

      Delete
    3. Great prediction Christine!

Sounds like she had heard something about Brown's early return, incorrectly concluded he'd be present for the ceremony, posted her "prediction" so she'd appear oh-so-clever, and then was wrong anyway.

      Delete
    4. Jerry has wised up over the years. He doesn't want the fiasco attached to the Brown name in any way, shape, or form.

I heard a few comments from bureaucrats on the news last night. Not one apology, not one. We should make pinatas out of them.

    5. Because his wife hustled him out of the state to see the in-laws in Michigan, precisely because she didn't want him connected to the bridge(in the political sense)..Lo and behold, he hightailed it back here in time to officiate at the opening(in law ennui), which would have been appropriate, given his role in the delay and the finished product. It was on his schedule which comes out every day. This was after lots of lobbying from big labor. Big labor supports JB, as you know.
There is also always that undercurrent of dread between JB and GN. JB has amassed many millions for a rerun in 2014, a term where he will be 80 when it's over.
Of course, GN who is both dyslexic and attention deficit disordered and always ambitious for the next job up the ladder wisely took advantage of the opportunity. They despise each other.

    6. Christine, how do you manage to lecture everyone about this subject when you were the only one who made a prediction and were 100% WRONG?

Do you think being wrong about something makes you an expert?

      Delete
    7. I made a prediction. I used my own name. When the prediction was wrong, I said so and said why I thought it would turn out differently. That you have difficulty with that, reflects only on you, and not well.

      Delete
    8. Actually, the fact Christine offered a "prediction", when she mistakenly believed she had some insider information, reflects badly on her.

She earns the booby prize for being both devious AND wrong!

  8. So now Lieberman is annoyed that the new Bay Bridge may open a little earlier than expected. Of course he would have been even more annoyed if it opened later than expected.

Rich, maybe you're just annoyed and looking for something to complain about.

      He's looking for clicks.

Clicks = attention = ability to better-attract advertisers = revenue = a shot at a big radio show = the chance that Rich will be the next Savage.

Of course, butterfly flapping wings = change in quantum state that echoes throughout the world = change in U.S. history = Justin Bieber now being a bus boy at the local Boston Chicken, but I'm not holding my breath.

    1. Civic projects are what we call something that is being built for the public to use like bridges, highways, infrastructure that we all share and need. Public taxes are used to pay for these things.

You think this is some kind of "liberal code"? Maybe you can build your own bridge next time you need to cross the Bay!

    2. The old Bridge was working just fine. Spare me the I Bar problem that was construction related. If Safety was the issue why were we not erecting steel in 1990? Also the new bridge will be to small in 15 years. I bet my left nut we loose one lane of the western span, to bicycles in Jinny Carter's lifetime.

  10. Here's one for you to blog about/investigate/bitch about, Rich: why are all these Southern California people speaking at the Bay Bridge ceremony? Talking about what "we" had to pay and "our sacrifices"? SoCal has nothing to do with this bridge. Do we go down to them and make self-congratulatory speeches when one of their projects is unveiled?

No wonder SoCal has the rep it has.

  13. The best thing about this Labor Day was that John Rothmann was sitting in for Gil, unfortunately I worked most of the time he was on. I could only listen for 45 min the first hour, and about 20 min. the last hour, however it was of course enough to realize how much better he is than just about anybody else, on the air in the Bay Area market. Not to mention how superior he is to Gil, he takes calls, he engage the callers, challenge them, he keeps the show interesting and the listeners learns a lot. Not once when I listened to John am I tempted to change the station, unlike the few minutes I can stand of Gil and Frosty. Why 910 thought Gil would be better than John is so beyond me. Gil these days are so predictable, the dumb criminals, who cares, and if he misses a few days, he insists on doing a whole weeks worth, same with his school stories, besides that he tell other dumb stories, chit chats with Sebastian and Lloyd, which can be a little amusing, but for the most part is just overdone. I could go on, but I don't see the point, I know I'm not alone in feeling Gil just either does not have what it takes anymore, or he has gotten lazy, or management want this inane format.

    1. Relax, he's not that great. Better than Gil? Sure. Who else is on in the Bay Area? I hear he came calling on KGO a few months ago, but it didn't go anywhere. Must be because he's so great.

      Delete
    2. Great or better is really a matter of opinion, obviously a lot of people think Hannity and Rush is great I don't. I happen to like John's style and not Gil's. Oh so because KGO did not hire him second time that means Rothmann is not an excellent host. Are you trying to tell me Cumulus which is KGO these days is actually concerned about quality. Right, they fired Gene Burns and John Rothmann kept Karel and then put the idiot Montemayor on and Maureen Langdon, I believe Cumulus is concerned about money not quality. Haven't heard Christine in months, they stopped having Stacy Taylor sit in for other hosts, both Christine and Stacy are superior to Monte and Maureen. Perhaps you don't know what a good host sound like, or perhaps we just have different taste. I miss Gene and John almost everyday, Gene is gone for good, I still hope to hear John on a station in the Bay Area so we can have an intelligent debate about issues of the day, rather than Gil's and Frosty's monolog and Monte superficial understanding of the subjects.

  14. Rich -- LOVE your comment about the "live" reporters wearing the hard hats. Are you effing kidding me?? They would not be allowed near the scene if a hard hat was required. It reminds me of seeing Dianne Feinstein at fires in the City wearing an SFFD turnout coat!!!
Hysterical that these fools take them selves so seriously.

    1. Just so you know, there's no "goes after" in being a blog shepherd or sheep. Skeptical opinions, valid or not, only have teeth if you actually go to the clown meetings and have your comment addressed DURING THE MEETING(in the meeting record). Rich's blog could be the best in the world, but it isn't relevant in cases like this.

      Bahhh Bahhhh.
