Toy stays on as Social Media Mgr; KTVU looking for New Managing Editor; Upper Brass Evaluated

KTVU is looking for a new Managing Editor. The station posted an ad on its website, but the person who handled the position, Michelle Toy, hasn't left. She's supposedly been given a new position as a social media manager; something dealing with presumably, Twitter, Facebook, and the like. I can hardly wait.

Let me say that as the situation at KTVU remains fluid, the idea that the dismissals are done over Namegate is not correct.

Seems fairly plausible that some people at the top are being evaluated.

  1. Just so everyone knows, she took the social media job BEFORE the gaffe happened. Her new position was announced maybe a day or two before "name gate." It's just strange timing. They would have been looking for a new managing editor either way.

    1. Possibly, but it's a saying in newsrooms that when you're a screw up they put you in charge of running the web page. It's a job requiring lots of typing but little thinking, almost clerical.

If that's a picture of Toy, it's no wonder they are not satisfied with her in such a high position as managing editor. She looks like a kid just out of college. Managing editor is a very responsible position, calling for years of seasoning and judgment. I'm not saying it's her fault: they probably hired her because she works cheap. In case nobody's noticed, over the last ten years and especially the last five, kids with haircuts have been popping up all over Bay Area TV news--anchors, reporters, managing editors, news directors. Some newsrooms barely have anyone in them over 30 anymore. Naturally, these people make a quarter what those they are replacing did--and have about a tenth the news judgment. This is why your evening news nowadays is little more than a string of press releases with video.

...And they still manage to screw things up.

    2. @11:40 She's not as young as she looks in that picture. My guess is that is an old photo.

    3. Maybe. Never met her. (Have you?) But it's peculiar that all the pictures of her on the internet, then, are "old photos."

  2. Can't wait for the KTVU/Toy tweet informing us that Mr. Rogers has died.

  3. What does a "social media editor" make per year?

    1. #$72.000 + Free use of an iphone so she can be a KTVU Drone off duty.I pulled that number out of my ass. I would think it had to be more than the last job. If not better than the last, it would be a confirmed demotion.

    2. I am willing to wager the social media editor's annual salary is less than the annual salaries of each of the people who were fired. Welcome to corporate America where it is not about the person but the money!

  4. Namegate is to RL 415 what Fall 2010 was to KNBR. Clicks/ComScore must be skyrocketing.

    I'm tuning in.

    (p.s. fuck KNBR)

  5. Social Media making $72000+ a year? In your dreams.

And yes, from Managing editor to running web site tie-ins is a demotion. Big-time. At KRON that's where we put the screw-ups, till eventually they left on their own accord. That way we didn't have to fire them and they couldn't collect unemployment or make any claims against Young.

  6. "Let me say that as the situation at KTVU remains fluid"

The situation at any work place is fluid at all times. Nobody is ever really safe, good times or bad. Certainly the gaffe has put 2 under the COX microscope but some of the pruning may just be long overdue and unrelated to the so called "namegate".

Marc Klass is on a valid & honorable crusade. Rich, I'm not so sure about you and your crusade. You may have to surrender your "big vinny" nickname and rightfully accept Rich "the milkman" lieberman.

    1. Marc Klass is a Crybaby making money off what happened. If he had stayed in his Marriage like a real man. That kid of his would never have been taken. I would also point out Rich has not called this a crusade.

    2. I don't care for what Marc Klass stands for. But be careful about judging someone who has lost a child. It does things to people.

  7. That is a serious demotion. But if others were fired she should be too. You have to have the back bone to say "don't go with this"

  8. In other news, have you heard the Megyn Kelly will be hosting a 9 o'clock primetime show on Fox News? Where does that leave Sean Hannity? With rumor going around that KSFO will dump Sean Hannity's show, is this evidence that Sean Hannity's career is in serious trouble?

    1. Hardly, but nice try. KSFO may dump Rush as well and he has some of the highest ratings in the country. The radio dumpings are a corporate cost cutting situation...other stations will pick them up.

  9. This is known in broadcasting as "failing upward!" It happens all the time in newsrooms, where people are not smart and talented enough to become reporters or producers. They get "promoted" into management where, in theory, they can do the least harm. Ask "Special Ed" Chapuis about this? He was fired in Las Vegas; fired at KCRA in Sacramento; and then eventually fired from KTVU.

Today, he is out of work, and no one worth their salt would hire this fraud.

He RUINED the KTVU newsroom, and "namegate" and all that follows in his aftermath is HIS legacy. Rosenthal was "appointed Captain of the Titanic" after it had already struck the iceberg and was sinking, with "Special Ed"at the helm!

    1. I agree with everything except that no one worth their salt would hire him. Well, maybe worth their salt is subjective, but if you're implying he's finished, no, he'll find work. Finlayson, Special Ed, and all of them are incompetents but they indeed fall upward. Finlayson, one of the biggest jokes of a leader I've ever met, now writes books about leadership and gives lectures. The track records of these people does not determine how they land. Connections, backs that need scratching, orifices that need filling--that's the secret to success.

    2. "Special Ed"Chapuis should be selling shoes in the mall. What a WASTE of space he is!

  10. What happened to Dick Lieberman live today? Every host took a shot at KOMY in your absence. Silverman started his show by welcoming KOMY's THREE listeners to his simulcast. Rich, are you too big now like Savage that you don't tell us you'll be off? I know you don't need callers but you do need an audience and ADVERTISERS!
