Chronicle Disses its Paywall; Repetitious KCBS Asleep at Wheel on Dorky PGA Fans; 49ers PBP Broadcaster Ted Robinson on my KSCO Show Today
News that the SF Chronicle is 86ing its paywall, (after just 4 months), only reinforces word around town that the paper is bleeding red ink and is fraught with financial trouble. We told you this first.
**I have always lauded KCBS but its overly-repetitious story count is just plain irritating, embarrassing, and ridiculous.
On Wednesday morning, (and this happens on a regular basis), the all-newsy 740 AM/106.9 FM, repeated story after story. After. story. After story. We got at least 6-8 repeats of a Bay Bridge opening --the SAME story with SAME actualities; the same repeat story about unsafe train bridges in San Mateo; a Barbara Taylor story on SF Green content, again, about 6-8 times, maybe more.
I get the fact that people are constantly getting in and out of cars and commuters are notoriously short-attention spanners, but clearly, KCBS has to nix this absurd practice. It is lazy, it is a disservice to its listeners and it essentially says out loud we're not creative. How about, say, a Dave Ross piece? Maybe a new feature. It beats the current formula.
**GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF SAND: Speaking of KCBS, a morning chat, (this morning), with John Madden and news anchor, Susan Leigh Taylor, and sports anchor, Steve Bitker, provided a case of the get your head out of the sand dept. Taylor and Bitker were bitching about the yahoos who yelled out dumb things at the PGA Players Tourney. Taylor and Bitker were incredulous that fans could scream such dumb things as "Mashed Potatoes!" and the old reliable, "Get it in the Hole!" If Bitker and Taylor would occasionally check the news themselves, they'd have already known the insults yelled out were compliments of Howard Stern's posse. The "bababooey" alliance is both delirious and annoyed.
**49ers PBP broadcaster, Ted Robinson, will be a guest on my KSCO/KOMY radio talk-show today from 3-3: 30 PM. Click the streaming audio link to listen to the show or just listen and download the podcast later in the day. (The full show airs 1-4 PM, M-F).

If the paywall did not work for a great paper like the NY Times, how could it possibly work for the Chronicle , which is a mere ghost of itself due to decimating its staff through layoffs and buyouts since Herb Caen passed away.
ReplyDeleteall you had to do was cut and paste the title of the article and the author - put into google and it came up for free. geez they were dumb.
ReplyDeleteDitto....
DeleteWhy would you want to though?
DeleteWho is Herb Caen? KCBS and there High Ratings show just how Dumb us listeners are.
ReplyDeleteWell that, and your command of the English language.
DeleteNo habla ingles
DeleteKCBS knows how to play the PPM game and they're winning.
ReplyDelete@ Drive By: "Who is Herb Caen?" Seriously? Or are you being sarcastic? It's unfathomable to me that someone could follow media in SF and not know this.
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb_Caen
Ya sorry I was 9
DeleteHey Rich, you can be rather redundant on your radio show as well. Give KCBS a break.
ReplyDeleteThanks for comparing me to KCBS. (wink)
DeleteSF Chronicle too bad your experiment did not work. We cry.
ReplyDeleteAs stated here previously, but worth repeating. Something we are fond of.
If you are looking for a business model see
The Drudge Report.
Here are some stats to chew on Chronicle.
944,000,000 visits in one month alone.
Read in over 100 countries.
All free content.
The Chronicle should make up their stories?
DeleteThank you, 8:18.
DeleteRegarding KCBS's repeating of news stories. A real shame.
ReplyDeleteWe will second the request for a Dave Ross story.
Even an AP story would be better than the constant barrage of repeats.
Any wonder SF Chronicle is dumping it's paywal?
ReplyDeleteYou can start with numbskull stories such as;
"Colin Kaepernick poses for GQ"
Say Chronicle lets post more narcissistic pieces why don't you.
Now to do something about Inside Bay Area on line. Some tekkie geek redesigned the front page. It loads faster! It's sleeker! And it has a third of the info it used to and a lot of it web nonsense and celebrity filler. I go there a lot less now. It's hard to access my hometown paper. The Trib is dead. So I'm glad the SF paywall is coming down.
ReplyDeleteRich trying to get ahead of Cumulus by interviewing Ted Robinson, who is more used than Jennifer Aniston. I've never EVER seen a group of stations use an announcer like Cumulus, et al, use Robinson.
ReplyDeleteI think Ted does a good job, but he's not color, nor is his insight that insightful. But we'll hear him, over and over and over and over again for the next 5 months.
Like Twitter...Rich was first.
Glad you have Ted Robinson on the air he does NOT stoop to juvenlie humour or schtick like the others at KNBR and asks good questions as well.
ReplyDeleteNot many brodcasters can match his resume of all major sports on local and national brodcasts and Olympics as well.He attends events not like the other hosts who just watch it on tv etc.So he must be doing something right for the people in charge of the various networks.
Wish KNBR would give him a full time talk show but proably busy with all his other assignments and does not want to be tied down with a talk show like the one he had on kcbs awhile back.
