KTVU Places Gag Order on Everyone in the Building

Everyone...from the interns and janitors to reporters, anchors, editors, producers can't say a word. They've been ordered not to say anything.

Good, KTVU: Hide and cower. That's a proactive approach.

It'll all come out, eventually.

  1. Aww so The "Trust" News Agency has now censored.

  2. Not surprised considering how blistering criticism has come from all sides. Hiding behind a fortress of silence will not help them in this case. It likely will ratchet up criticism. They need to quickly come clean on how the names got into the process and terminate, suspend, or remove to other positions those responsible. There is another factor involved:Fox. I have no doubt someone from Fox has contacted Cox and wants it resolved as well.

At least the airline has withdrawn the idea of suing but does not mean others will not file alleging a violation under a harassment statute.

    1. Mark....Fox is not exactly detailed in their fact checking when it comes to news, not sure if you noticed that, but they have no skin in the game here. They (KTVU)are merely an affiliate of the Fox Network, which is the entertainment division. Fox News operations has nothing to do with KTVU. When KTVU goes live with breaking news on a national level, they use CNN raw feeds, never Fox News.

    2. KTVU is not a Fox network affiliate. It's owned by Cox, which is an independant media company.

    3. To anon at 20 Jul 2013 at 06:51 and 09:02:

I am perfectly aware KTVU is an affiliate of Fox. However Fox does have a vested interest when that stations news division screws up in such a way. As an affiliate they are tied in to use Fox News Channel resources for national/international coverage (even if that station made a point in the past of thumbing their nose at using it). So they have an interest.

And they can certainly put pressure on Cox about fixing the problem as well as reminding KTVU they are supposed to be using Fox News Channel not CNN for national or international news coverage.

    4. Uh Mark...no. I have been there since 1993....it has never been the case, and Fox News op and the network has no say as to what is put through the newsroom....

  4. Rich is going to beat this to death.

There is nothing wrong with an organization under siege, as KTVU certainly is, attempting to communicate clearly with a single voice. We'll see what they have to say when they say it.

Rich accuses them of hiding and cowering. I disagree. They've taken a great deal of well-deserved criticism but kicking a dog when it's down is hardly necessary.

    1. KTVU kicked down every other media outlet in town after the plane crash, boasting its 100 percent accuracy and sending out a news release slamming the competition. Those in glass houses...

    2. I myself sincerely appreciate Mr. Lieberman's continued efforts to report on this story. He didn't kick some poor helpless dog. This rabid dog bit people all around the U.S. without provocation or warning. Who are you, some exec from the station? Time to put this dog to sleep......

  5. The ship is sinking! So glad the "Titanic of news" has finally hit the iceberg. Hope ya' all can swim!! The Cox family finally found a mess that it can't buy its way out of! A company that insists that everyone else abide by the 1st Amendment, won't uphold the 1st Amendment. The viewing public notes the double standard. Good riddance!

    1. Is there a podcast available of this alleged reconciliation? Will Rich Lieberman make the following statement on his show on Monday?: "It is what it is. At the end of the day. The Bloated one and I decided to do the proverbial kiss and make up routine. For what it's worth. People grow. It is what it is. Haha. Dave Michaels you wanna chime in?".

  7. hahaha yes Rich, a gag order...aka stop talking to that Lieberman prick or anyone else until we have things sorted. I've never seen someone with such a hardon for human error, and I'm glad to hear that your masturbation material has been confiscated. We all know you were starting to chafe anyways.

They screwed up. That's it. They'll apologize, whatever. What more is possibly needed.

    1. What will come out?

Who will get fired? Who takes the heat? Was that person thrown under the bus?

And...what exactly happened? if you can't read names to a NTSB intern for confirmation, then did you fake it or did you say, hey, we got names (without pronouncing them) are they right?

Yep? Yep. Let's go with it.

    2. I'm glad to see that you are not offended Mr. Non Asian. GREAT! Now all the Asians should just go and F'k themselves because you are not offended. I'm sure that was a sincere apology to. They knew they would have to apologize from the beginning. It was all part of their plan, "oh, we'll just apologize at the end and everything will go away because what are those Asians going to do to us?" KTVU knows that Asians comprise a small portion of America's population. We are conservative people and don't like the spotlight. KTVU took advantage of this to get a quick laugh from their majority non-Asian viewers. You know it, and I know it!

      Delete
    3. EXACTLY SIR! We all want to know if there was a conspiracy and precisely how many people are involved. KTVU's whole plan was to get a quick laugh and then apologize. They felt it would go away easy because if the authors at the station thought it was really funny, then for sure their viewers, or at least their majority non-Asian viewers would like it. Well, it didn't quite work out the way KTVU conspired huh?

    1. This station will never be the same. Whether it's the ND who gets fired, the so-called reporter, the graphics person, they will go to their next job and have to explain that they were involved in namegate.

      Humiliating.

    2. not this one.

this station's scandal was featured on every outlet from Huffington post and USA today to the today show, CNN, and even Stephen Colbert.

Do your research you'll find another Lee Rosenthal story called the homeless idol was on the Jon Stewart show. Lee wanted to find a homeless guy in Indianapolis who had the "golden voice" that his former Columbus station found and it blew up in his face.

Don't stations do background checks? I mean, real background checks before hiring news directors. Why was he fired from Columbus? Call and get anyone on the phone and ask questions?

Humiliation and two weeks won't make this go away.

Obviously they did this the day it happened. No one is allowed to publicly diss their employer.

This isn't news. It's Rich trying to conjure news. Do you honestly think that before today Rosenthal's position was "Please, talk to everyone, go on Jon Stewart, do penis puppets with me as the head prick, don't be shy, your jobs are safe"?

Talk about a tempest in a tea pot...

  15. Rosenthal can be blunt and hard-charging, and that pisses some people off. But he made that Tribune station a lot of money. Or his news department did while he was news director after AEs couldn't sell spots for crap for years. Social media isn't really what got him noticed. It's the growth of that Indy station's news and the ratings and the money that came with it. Maybe he had nothing to do with it and he's a total f-up and should go flip burgers. He can go piss off McDonald's when he says In-N-Out's burgers are better than theirs.

  16. It isn't a surprise that such a fiasco happened even at KTVU. The quality of news organizations in the mainstream media has gone in the toilet since deregulation has allowed companies to downsize and bring in rookie talent that is being paid peanuts.

The sad thing is that these fresh faced kids not only are clueless as to what has happened in recent years the media, but worse, they don't care! Most of them are not trained in journalism and don't have the proper training to be working in a major market. And it seems all that many want to do it text and tweet with their buds and share the latest BS gossip.

I work at one of the local stations (I I won't tell you which one, you try to figure it out), and it's amazing how the quality of professionalism and accountability has gone in the toilet over the last decade.

When you have unprepared, untrained rookies, who is years past would have had to cut their teeth in small markets like Fresno and Eureka, rather than getting the plumb jobs in the major markets, and now they're getting the good jobs (well, they used to be the good jobs, but any seasoned pro would be insulted by the ridiculously small packages that companies are now giving their employees), it doesn't bode well for the industry.

But companies like Cumulus, Infinity, Cox and Clear Channel could care less about quality. They hire people not based on their get their young employees.

As long as these naive youngsters continue to proliferate and take the jobs that used to belong to seasoned pros, we'll have more incidents like the one that happened recently at KTVU.

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone! And I know Rich feels the same way as I do; it's a crying shame what has been allowed to happen to our important media these days. No, rather, it's a crime!

    1. It's funny how everyone keeps blaming this, and everything else wrong in the media, on "rookies." Dennis Richmond was just 25 years old when he started anchoring at KTVU: fact. He didn't spend years in Fresno before getting his start. Sal Casteneda has been at KTVU for 14 or 15 years, and he's only in his 40's now. That means he was young when he started. As a matter of fact, all of the great reporters and anchors that worked in this market for years were fresh-faced kids when they started. And ironically, all of the people involved in "name-gate" are seasoned professionals at KTVU: fact. Anyone, young or old, experienced or not, can shine, or in this case, screw-up.

    2. I read your post and kept thinking Elizabeth Cook. She's an idiot. Can't even write a package. I'm guessing you work at KPIX.

    3. Anon at 9:23 am....one big distinction is that the concept of journalism and the need to check sources was sacrosanct even while Sal was at Cal, and of course when Dennis was sent by KTVU to be schooled and polished. The concept today is that any chimp with a laptop and wifi connection thinks they are journalists. Not that they can't be, but they have little respect or knowledge for the fourth estate. Look at Instagram for the mentality and life cycle of "events".
Another factor is the size of a production control room crew in Denniis' heyday was about 8 people....for most newscasts today were talking 3.
KTVU issued an edict to their engineering staff in late 2000 that Cox corporate was willing to accept a drop in production value and quality because they were happy with head count. One department inside KTVU went from 43 to less than 16. These were people who would've stopped errors before they hit air. All the gnashing of teeth by clueless suits is puzzling giving they created the crap model they have. Don't make it rain and then complain about the weather.

    4. I'm not arguing that things haven't changed. Obviously they have. I'm sure it was a lot easier to double check your sources when there were only two newscasts to produce. Also, you HAD to do your own research back then, there was no Internet. My point was simply stop blaming everything on young journalist. There are plenty of capable young journalist. The problem has more to do with the fact that people don't have to wait until 5pm or 10pm to get their news. If they're like me, they can get it anytime on their phone... AND they can read more than one article at a time to get more details on the story, verses waiting for a 20 second version on it at 10pm. People who are younger than me get updates from twitter instantly. You'd be surprised how many times that info turns out to be correct, and TV stations often have to play catch-up. The landscape of journalism, what it means to the public, and how it is produced has changed. One thing that HAS NOT changed is TV stations hiring young talent, even in large markets.

  17. Ktvu news is my primary bay area local news source above all others. Sad this happened to tori or any of the ktvu anchors. In other thread, I appreciate the background of how the system is set up to drop in, generate, and read.

In my viewer outside the industry perspective, on the outside this is funny and will be internet viral famous. Sad that tori, who seems to be a consummate pro is the face of this mistake, but it technically could happen. And what about the "(s)He who has never or can assure us they will never make a mistake cast the first stone"?

On the inside (ktvu / industry) it ain't funny and has to be dealt with seriously. Ktvu has egg on its face, and not for the first time, but they need to figure how this happened and to make sure it doesn't happen again. Every other media outlet is probably also going to want to what happened so they don't wind up with egg on their face at some future point or story.

And with no thought to cowardice, a corporate gag order at this point isn't about hiding from blame or fault, but prudent corporate legal step since there's probably going to be some number of potential claims or suits somewhere down the road. And until they can trace back the dominoes into the who's and the hows, better to make sure you plug the holes until you figure out what your problems a really are. Hell, I'm not even a lawyer, but even I think a corporate gag, much as I personally dislike the concept, is like totally, "Well yeah... Duh!"

Oh, and as for the other time; there's a meme out there with the ktvu news slug for a story, and it shows a guy being interviewed, and his name: Mike Litorus. That is funny now, got past someone then, and the fact that it happened then doesn't spoil the reputation of ktvu for me now. I do hope they get the how and the why figured out for this most recent embarrasment, soI'll continue enjoying the funny aspect into the future.
Btw, I was out of the bay area on vacation; still am, typing from the campground at mammoth hot springs in Yellowstone via my iPhone.

    Submitted respectfully & IMHO.

  18. Dear Rich, Thought you would enjoy this, in case you missed it. Thanks for your great site! Fondly, Suga

    From NYT:
Ed Rogers, the chairman of the BGR Group (formerly Barbour Griffith & Rogers) and a top aide to both Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, wrote in an e-mail:

The G.O.P. House has between 20 and 30 members who are ideological purists who think every issue and vote is black or white. Combine that with the members who fear a primary from the right, and you have maybe 60 votes that are hard to get. We have lost the art of governing in Washington. In the Congress no one is able to make and execute long-term plans.

There is a striking correlation between the rise of conservative talk radio and the difficulties of the Republican Party in presidential elections. In an April Reuters essay, “Right Wing Talk Shows Turned White House Blue,” Mark Rozell, the acting dean of the George Mason University School of Public Policy, and Paul Goldman, a former chairman of Virginia’s Democratic Party, wrote:

Since Rush Limbaugh’s 1992 bestseller “The Way Things Ought to Be,” his conservative talk show politics have dominated G.O.P. presidential discourse — and the Republicans’ White House fortunes have plummeted. But when the mainstream media reigned supreme, between 1952 and 1988, Republicans won seven out of the 10 presidential elections.
