Super Radio Juggernaut: Savage might be Cumulus King as El Rushbo and Lew Dickey Bicker

Could San Francisco-based national talker, Michael Savage, be Cumulus' star tonsil?

With Rush Limbaugh and Cumulus bigwig, Lew Dickey, bickering, Savage, whose ratings have shot through the roof and who dominates SF and NY national talk radio, (and who just received a huge legal victory), might become Cumulus' main content provider.

There's a lot of the table.

  1. Interesting. Even Rush hates the Dickies.

  2. I see it in two ways. 1.) Cumulus doesn't want to pay the money Rush is asking for and 2.) The talk radio landscape needs to change. It's stale and really played out. I'm glad to see Savage winning 2 big fights. Hey Rich did you happen to hear or see the things Savage said about Sean Hannity last week?

    2. He called him a fake conservative and shallow here's the audio: http://www.mediaite.com/online/michael-savage-trashes-fake-conservative-hannity-one-of-the-most-shallow-men-in-media/

  3. Yes, the radio landscape needs to change, Levin, Rush and Hannity are soo predictable, liberal, conservative in the middle, they are boooring. I don't get Savage, he can be good, but he is really not a very nice person, although he seem to more understanding of the common laborer (he supports an increase in minimum wages). He yells too much, he is too angry etc. I won't go on. I listen to Tim Montemayor discuss Syria this week-end, Ronn discussed the same subject this morning. What a difference, like Ronn or not, he still is very, very good, he is also NOT an intellectual lightweight, he can see the nuances, Monte is just too black and white, which is much too simple for many subjects. Gil still grates on my nerves, too many stories, (he recently added dumb teachers to dumb criminals)please spare me all the stories, I don't find them interesting or entertaining. He does not take calls, or very few. We need John Rothman, Stacy Taylor, others.
I like Brian Copeland, he certainly is better than Monte, same for Christine Kraft.

    1. Please the guy doesn't even like the name his parents gave him: Tim Montemayor.

Just to rub it in, when I sometimes call his show, it's only to preface my statement with the greeting: Hi Tim

(More for my own enjoyment - but it must irk Timmy, somewhat, too.)

    2. Yeah, hannity and Obama are intellectual equals.

      Good one...

    3. @8:49 You're right. I think Hannity actually went to classes in college....

    4. and by college you mean Apex Tech. if you think obama didn't go to class than you're pretty much a huge effing moron, which, btw, is synonymous with conspiracy theorist.

  7. Bitter f---ing lefties. Why do you think you can't even have some jerkwater, crackpot Am station with Karel outside Santa Cruz. I laughed when I heard that tea kettle had been sold. Nobody, outside of the lunatic left listen to this nonsense. Plus, left wing radio doesn't work for advertisers. It's too anti American, negative, and childish. Just like some of the posters here.

    1. the most successful radio talk stations have bright, prepared hosts with differing points of view..playing off the news of the day, and off of each other, giving the public a marketplace of competing ideas where they can assert their own points of view. In other words, there has to be a "there" there to care enough to listen.
Happily you would never have the taste to appreciate the offerings of the Monterey Peninsula, hardly a place for either jerks or the unsophisticated.

    2. Please understand one thing, just because we don't like Rush, Sean, Levin or Savage does not mean we are bitter.
And right wing radio is not negative these day? Really, they can't even bring themselves to say that Obama is a good father or husband. And no we don't vote democratic because we are stupid, or don't listen to all sides, or don't understand the issues, favorite explanation of the right, as to why Obama won. We vote democratic because WE DISAGREE WITH LUNATIC RIGHT. We are country of diverse opinions, I thought that is what America is all about. However, 4:47 seem to have a problem with that, have to call us bitter f---ing lefties. Grow up and stop name calling just because someone does not agree with you. I commend Tom Sullivan for saying on his show, that he disagrees with Obama on most issues, but would like to sit down and have a beer with him, because he thought he was a charming guy. Why do you need to demonize anyone who disagrees with you.
You have been listening to Savage and Levin to much.
Civil discourse can actually be interesting, try it some time.

    4. I agree with everything Christine said except her statement about the Monterey Peninsula. I live in Pebble Beach near Spanish Bay. This area is a lot of things, but sophisticated it is not. This is a tourist trap, full of overpriced establishments which provide shoddy quality. The natural beauty is of course great, but the lack of diversity and mostly over 60 crowd is less than appealing. Can't wait to bolt out of here...

      Delete
    5. My family's home was on the 8th green at spyglass. We never saw any tourists. Did you ever try the Bach festival?

      Delete
    6. Christine, tourists are everywhere on 17 Mile Drive! I'll give the Bach festival a try this year. I've been here a little over a year and although naturally beautiful, the overpriced food establishments, touristy nature of Carmel, PB, Monterey and to some extent PG and lack of ethnic diversity have been a disappointment.

    7. Aha, so Christine grew up in affluence on a golf course. That explains a lot like the exaggerated sense of entitlement and self-importance.

      Delete
    8. I didn't grow up there..I grew up in San Marino. I'm not a golfer. Surfers say terrible about things golfers and their green neon pants.
As for Carmel, there are many wonderful places that tourists know nothing about. I was part of the first crew at Carmel Bay Company and we had some pretty sophisticated clients: Oscar DeLaRenta, Steve McQueen, Ali Mcgraw, Joan Collins,Dyan Cannon, Maggie and clint Eastwood and a host of others. We did all the interiors at Ventana in Big Sur. There are so many beautiful private homes and properties which tourists know nothing about. It's like saying all San Francisco resembles the hideous Pier 39.

    9. Thanks for posting this off topic chatter Rich. After reading this exchange, I can die a fulfilled person by casting aside real world experiences and live vicariously thru these amazing folks.

      Keep up the good work!

    10. Aha, so in order to enjoy the REAL Carmel, we have to hang with Clint, De La Rental, Collins and a host of other multimillionaires. That's like saying in order to enjoy the real San Francisco you must stay away from Pier 39 and hang with the Gettys in Pacific Heights. Christine never ceases to surprise...

  8. Curious how Savage is the only "conservative" cautioning us against getting in deeper in Syria. He rightly reads the tea leaves, seeing a proxy war with Russia, and then a fallen regime that morphs into a more militant muslim state, something we don't need. The water-carriers for the GOP, particularly Hannity and the foolish Senator John McCain, are pounding the drums for more war. Many Americans, as well as many "liberal" voices, are oblivious to the mess we're about to enter. His voice, on this matter at least, is one of reason.

  9. Rush is becoming the Arthur Godfrey of the 21st century....somebody your grandpa listens to.

  10. if savage is the future it only goes to show how bad radio is. Music changes, TV changes, movies change, art changes, but here we are talking about these old syndicated wind bags?

    Its embarrassing.

Simply because of deregulation we are having a discussion about who is best amongst the awful.

Yet ironically, Rich seems to write this post with a celebratory tone as if cumulus is doing a good thing, or that this brand of radio is beneficial to the listener!

A lot of old ideas being discussed here because of corporate rsdio limitations.

  11. rush is premier. Doesn't work for cumulus. Everyone knows what happened there with the fluke story.

Savage is too old to compete with rush. Some of his shows are absolutely terrible. Some great but those are few in between the bad. Rush is consistent and strong. Savage is not even if he's better on his best days. I used to think rush sounded like a broken record. Now savage does when he talks about the demise of radio or immigration.

Either way, cumulus is only connected to rush until contracts expire, and when they do, savage doesn't have enough in the tank to take him on.

He's #1 in NYC? Against what?!? Who the heck is on 9-mid? Its like being the smartest kid in special Ed!

    1. Amen! After reading Rich's post I tuned to Savage last night after months of not listening to him. He was rambling on about 50 MILLION illegal immigrants taking over the USA. I couldn't take it for more than one minute. Old, tired and predictable.

  12. Some rich old white dude is arguing with another rich old white dude, so a different rich old white dude might get richer while yet another rich 50-something white dude waits for all of them to clear out so he can be king of right-wing crackpot radio. RADIO IS SO EXCITING!

    1. I listen to Barbara, she is an intelligent women, and has some good shows. However, she is very extreme on many issues, and why can't she show the office of the presidency some respect, and call Obama the president, instead of calling him "that man in the white house", even if she doesen't like him or his policies. I was also very offended when awhile back she called Michele Obama "upperty" sounds racists to me.

  15. is there a person who feels more rejected from who he is than michael wiener? he doesn't even use his real name. i just heard him say "we're not getting too many callers from the upper east side...from boca raton..." isn't he from new york and doesn't he vacation in boca raton? he's talking about vietnam. did he volunteer for vietnam, or did he go to school to avoid vietnam? i hate these guys who all avoided war always thanking the military. the whole thins is so disingenuous. he's kinda sad and strange at the same time but i guess the act is what fuels the show.
