KGO/KNBR/KSFO, Radio Mafia; Love Letters; Why You Love me; KQED; Giants and Concessions Workers; Media Dinners in the 415; Bay Area Media Notes Thursday

The more I keep doing this, and I still enjoy annoying the best of 'yous with your PrimaDonna tude in full ego mode, the more I discover the fact that we've settled back under the mediocre level. The scrambled bits still left are enough to make Murph and Mac palpable which in and of itself should make all of us consider therapy--that is, unless we already have succumbed to Red Bull lungs and his Scott Piccoli dude. The end of the world is coming.

**Those of you that abhor me and think I'm just yakking on some Neanderthal radio station will love the fact than when I start lecturing you, sooner or later, on the SF airwaves, (if all goes well and I don't doubt MZ), it was all worth it.

**Here's the real deal: I'm the one--the only one can dish it out and tell you what the others won't and that's why you come here. By the way, I took a few days off--don't read anything into that other than I had a bad dream and thought I was immersed in a Kate Scott-Larry Kruegar en fuego.

**The Radu and Fred and Ethel: Raddy is suddenly very, very hyper. Maybe the constant ass-kissing is beginning to really rub on him, as if he just realized that the Cumulus ones are indeed subsidizing his brake job on the expensive used Bentley.

**KNBR without the Giants: J-LO without the ass; Beyoncé without Jay-Z; The Kardashians without the Kardashians; the Stones without Mick; Byrnesie without stolen money from the Arizona D-Backs.

**KFOG was hip about 25 years ago when there were no cell phones and Internet and live living things, no Cumulus. KFOG today is only relevant to the few remaining baby boomers who buy mattresses and cars, stuff like that, but view FM as if it were Masterpiece Theatre 2.0.

**Dennis Constantine: Yeah, a regular Marconi.

**Tom Rapponi, GM, KTVU: Have you seen the ratings in the early evenings? The truth is, forget about thanking the viewers trusting us---think more about the viewers who have left and migrated over to KRON, for god's sake.

**The very, very best play-by-play guy here in the Bay Area is Ken Korach. Jon Miller is good but he's not Jesus Christ. And Miller, for heavens sake, can you give the damn score every now and then in between the jokes and Scully impressions.

**Yes, a prime tonsil at KCBS has been noticeably missing in the PM and haven't got a clue why because no one wants to talk, but I'll know soon enough and pass it along.

**Amy Trask, the high-powered woman bigshot that just resigned from the Raiders? Not one column locally about why she left, not even a hint. Good journalism, guys.

**Henry Schulman, SF Giants beat writer, for the SF Chronicle: Suddenly hijacked by Larry Baer but what else is new.

**Speaking of the Chronicle: the more and more you hear, the hemorrhaging continues but as long as Hearst owns the paper, all is well. Unless you're an employee.

**Here's a Giants item you won't see or hear anywhere else, just some common sense shit: A multi-MILLION ATM machine that rakes in MILLIONS of dollars annually, a virtual cash cow. Yet they stand idly and quiet by as their loyal concessions workers, who haven't had a raise in three years, contemplate striking because of a long and heavy workload. $15 an hour, (on average), in the Bay Area, even for seasonal workers, is more like $7. And, oh, by the way, those loyal concessions workers were not even invited to the team's World Series parade. Is that part of the Giants way, Larry?

**PS, yeah, I know it's CenterPlate that reps management in this dispute, but it's in the Giant's house and Baer and company, if they really wanted to, could settle this damn thing in a SF second if they wanted to.

**KQED workers, just be damned glad that someone even cares about you. I don't need some of your anointed ones carping me because I dared to allow a respected voice to get his two cents in.

**If the Radu were paid by how many hoovers he's been giving lately to Freddy Kruegar, he'd need not have to have bought the used Bentley and thus, need a brake job after only 4K miles. He could have leased a new one.

**KTVU in not only getting beaten by KRON in the early evening, but by KGO, KNTV and PIX too. Tom, what is the frequency?

**If you all get the impression that I don't care, you are right. This market is a complete farce. A piece of herring in what was once the sea of caviar taken hostage by the radio mafia from Atlanta; whose market TV viewers have been hoodwinked by a bunch of asshole consultants who've hired a bunch of low-grade amateur-hour, twenty-something  newbies who look and act as if they just retreated from a Fresno Walmart.

**The FM sports-only station that still can't break a 1 in the overall ratings just hired another contest winner which speaks volumes as to one of the 8 billion reasons why no one is listening. Perhaps its illustrious PD, Mr. Barrett, might want to consider the fact that even though Entercom is cheap, it's not that cheap.

**KSFO, KNBR, KGO....radio mafia. And get this, they're now cannibalizing their own content and actuality freely. Yep, 'yous all the SAME. The same old tired can of sardines invented by people and accountants that are NOT radio people, not broadcasting people, just a bunch of shitty financial people that essentially killed the Bay Area radio scene. The Dickeys Brothers En Fuego just cashed a $7M bonus check and left all of you peon workers out in the dust. How frickin' hilarious!

**Trolls, listen up: When the producers are tired of writing me and you're left handing off duties to the interns, be sure to get orange soda money from The Radu. He's always good for that.

**KGO/KNBR: In 2008, over 35 AE's and counting. Today, fewer than 20, combined. 'Nuff said.

**Damon Bruce and I update: Peace treaty.

**Morse Code: Greg Papa, Randy Hahn, Mark Curtis and Ronn Owens.

**Two $5 pizzas: Larry Beil and Paul Deanno.

**$35 lunch at Zuni: Liz Cook and Jessica Aguirre.

**$100 drinks and appetizers at Perbacco: Diane Dwyer and Ama Daetz.

**$50 shooters at Old Ship: Caroline Tyler and me.

**$350 dinner for two at Gary Danko: Caroline Johnson and Dan Ashley. (Excluding tip).

**The $8.95 turkey and stuffing at Tommy's Joynt: Radnich and Fred and Ethel.

**A 2-buck cup of coffee and stale bagel at Red's Java House: Joe Fonzi.

**SHE BLINDED ME, WITH SILENCE!: Roberta Gonzales.

  1. Didn't someone once say "I don't care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right." The people who are criticized the most must be the most listened to?

  2. Raddy said yesterday there was only 28K on the Bentley...are you saying he is fibbing? hmmmmm

    1. No,but that Bentleys are pieces of over priced junk cars. Imagine buying a new car..and the brakes are squealing at 20,000+ miles already? By now,the electric windows are grinding and the clock is blinking 3 am all the time. The fenders are hand carved? LOL. So what?

  3. Gary Radnich is simply the best - he has more personality than the rest of the 415 media combined. People only put him down because they want what he has and are frustrated because they don't have the talent to achieve it themselves.

    4. Oh please. Sure, Admiral Fat may get his share of yucks on the air, but off air, he's pure vitriol and spite to everyone around him. I know because I've had the displeasure of working with him and he never misses the opportunity to humiliate anyone beneath him.

    5. 814 is right. Hearing or seeing Radnich talk about how "He gets along with everybody" is a laugh. He's King of lookout for no.1 is right...

  4. Don't blame Tom Raponi for the demise of KTVU. He just inherited the stinking sinking ship that "Special Ed" Chapuis and Tim McVay steered right straight into the iceberg. Blame the Titanic mess on THEM!

    1. Oh, and speaking of the people who ruined KTVU. The "Hall of Shame" includes ex-Cox-TV President Andy "The Whipper" Fisher! Maybe had he spent more time minding the store..instead of tying up his mistress in a Washington, DC hotel room...he'd still have a job! 5. I caught some of Anny Hong on KRON. She had on a sheer white blouse. And boy,was it chilly in the studio- wink-wink. Either that or 350 pounds of Radnich had her excited. It was chilly.

The woman's prominence's are conspicuous on her chestal area...Kept me watching. Weather? something about fog and sun...

  8. For your KNBR comparisons, instead of it being "the Kardashians without the Kardashians," it's more like the Kardashians without Kim. They'd be nothing without her, and that infamous tape of hers. Not that I "keep up" with that sorta thing....... *guilty face*.......

  10. Hoped that a few days off would do this blog some good. It didn't. Same envious Hater spiel.
Only thing missing was Rich's obligatory "Bay Area Super Bowl-who cares?" bit (unless it was buried in the garbage at the top of the page somewhere)

    1. QUESTION: Who's dumber? Me, who posted this, or YOU, who, in spite of your obvious hatred of "this blog", you took the time to write me on this blog you clearly don't like?

      Sincerely, The Hater.

  11. I don't remember seeing an article on why the Raiders were lucky to have Trask. Why then, would there be one regarding her departure? Drum up a biased gender angle? Not every split needs to be handled in a sensational way like a Marc Trestman firing.

She'll write a book (Just win, babydoll)to satisfy the why's and how's of her stay/departure, then enter politics to feather her nest.

  17. I agree with you about Ken Korach. He is a joy to listen to and paints each ballgame as a new portrait.
Sad that he doesn't get the recognition or fame that Jon Miller does.

  18. Were you at the Bay Area sports hall of fame tonight? I enjoyed Mark Ibanez' opening remarks pertaining to the bloated one. I almost gagged on the linguini I made this evening based on your recipe.

  19. As much as I enjoy the Giants broadcast team and the Post Game Wrap, three of the guys are getting up there in age. Kuip is making a lot of mistakes and Jon seems to be out of practice since returning from his "assignment". Flem seems to be the sharpest of the four.

    1. I'm one of those odd-ball throw-backs who "watches" the Giants exclusively on radio.  I learned baseball sitting in the backseat of the Mercury listening to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons (dad was oblivious to the fact that his youngest daughter had a real interest in baseball).

Jon Miller reminds me a bit of them; he has a distinctive voice that is very listenable. He is also admirably able to weave a story in and around calling the game.  My one small complaint is how he has this hesitation before saying if it's a ball or a strike, or if a long fly ball is outta here or is going to be caught. Sometimes I just listen to the crowd reaction to know what happened on the field!

Don't get me wrong, I love Jon and the entire crew.  The Giants have been blessed with some of the greatest announcers in the game.

PS Marty Lurie does a phenomenal show.  When you listen, his voice has the energy and passion for the game of a much younger man...but he is not a much younger young man. I like that.

      Delete
    2. Ack, you're right about Miller's hesitations. I find myself shouting "Spit it out!" or drawing my own conclusion based on the fan noise in the background.

But, yes, we still have the best foursome and, when Marty is on, the best pre-game and post-game shows.

  20. I just love when Rich swings for the long ball!

  21. Oh boy,Kate Scott is in trouble with the boys. Raddy made a point of telling Hal Rameys kid "You did a beautiful job of BLENDING in".Uh,compared to who I ask? The reply from born to white mans club in media member Ramey? "Gary, all that matter is EVERYBODY cares" in a huge sucking noise. The week went by and Raddy or Kreugy said nada about missing Kate. Just backhanded slams like today. You know what? Raddy says nicer things about Monty then he does about Kate.
Maybe its Raddy's bad health talking. The droopy eyes and big bags and slumped shoulders say "If I knew I had to keep working as a millionaire at 63,I would have married a woman my age instead of young and wants everything".
But,that's an ages old story. Why anybody would buy a Bentley..

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jon Miller is a great host and MC, but only an average 'ball in play' announcer.

He tries to embellish the play too much and takes too long to tell you what happened.

Kate Scott mumbles and cancels out the other two (not always the worst thing). You don't have to mumble to be cool.

    1. "He tries to embellish the play too much and takes too long to tell you what happened."

Yeah, I don't care if the ball hits the sixth or seventh archway. Is it in right-center or Triples Alley? Just say it!

      Delete
    2. Sometimes you hear the crowd cheering the put-out that has already been made, while Miller is still describing the third baseman angling the body to make the off balance throw to first.

  23. Brian Hackney on ch5 weekend weather,a week ago: "Why do they say the new bay bridge is earthquake proof to 6.8 or 7.0 or any other number? Its not true!"...lo and behold a week later BANG has a front page story on how they don't know what it takes to damage the bridge,or even cause a collapse, only it should be better then the old one. Hackney went from raving lunatic to..expertise. One for he.

He still blew it on Susan Blake though..the big one of weekend anchor woman.
