Culture Class

What are we to make of headlines?

Do real people eat tofu?

Is it sacrilegious to say you don't care?

Why do people put pineapple on pizza?

Channel 2 paranoia and KPIX dysfunction.

Managers get promoted and get to be consultants.

Why do you all aggravate yourself? I don't want to cause you ill health.

I think a good burger is grilled, not fried.

Was there an issue about some athlete coming out?

"Kenneth, what is the frequency?"

I don't care.

  1. This is really off the subject, if there was a subject in the above blog. I was off today, spent time in my car mid to late afternoon. How long is Gil Gross going to be able to keep talking for 4 hours, with no callers? Those of us who like talk radio like to hear callers. Experts are fine, but interact with the public once in awhile. After listening off and on to Gil from 3 to 6 p.m. I had to turn him off, his voice just grates on you. I dare say most hosts would probably wear out their welcome after 4 hours if they don't take calls. Gene Burns was a master of the monolog, I can listen to John Rothman, but 4 hours is too much of most hosts, it is certainly way too much of Gil, 2 hours would do just fine. I also listened to Tom Sullivan, and although I often disagree with Tom, I find him easier to listen to than Gil. Gil tells too many stories, is not really that funny, and often answer his own questions. It is very frustating, since there is definitely some radio talent available, that is not heard in the Bay Area (John Rothman, Stacy Taylor, Peter B Collins, instead we are being forcefeed the worst of the worst i.e. hanging with Langdon, Montemayor and yes Gil, I'm sorry to say this, I think Gil is a nice man, I use to like him, but he use to take calls and he use to be on 2 hours, not 4, big difference. Just really frustrated with the state of talk radio, in what I use to think was radio heaven, the Bay area.

    1. Totally agree about Gil. He may be local, but many of the issues he gets "experts" to comment on are not local, so in many ways he is not that much different from a national host covering general issues. 4 hours of his current format is just too much -- too much information, too many topics, nothing in depth. If he talks to a guest for more than just the usual few minutes, he seems to consider it in depth. Unless he takes local calls, there is nothing to distinguish his program as local. I'm wondering how much this format is his decision or management's directive. In either case, it is just too much.

I've been enjoying Tom Sullivan lately (as long as it's not just Obama or democrat bashing which gets old and is basically useless). He often has interesting DISCUSSION topics and the callers are a part of the discussion. I enjoy hearing the opinions of just regular people around the country to hear what they're thinking and what their reality is (as opposed to what the govt and media tell us people are experiencing).

Is there any way we can try to get the message to Talk910 that callers are an important part of talk radio format? Hearing one person talk or ask questions for 4 hours is not working for me. Can take it or leave it.

  2. to my own shock, i recently discovered that pineapple can be good on pizza, IF it's balanced with spicy. one of my favorites, at Jiffy's in Lake Tahoe, has pineapple along with pepperoni, feta, and jalepenos.

    1. I got the idea to try Avocado on Pizza. Tasted great. I wouldn't doubt Broccoli would work too..Broccoli seems to go good with everything.
I also learned that if you take a $7 Caesars deep dish, bring it home and put it in a toaster oven?,the crust turns into a delicious crisp. Then,if you want, add your own toppings extra..You come way out ahead of any frozen Pizza.

    2. Harley's Hawaiian Pizza
      1. Peel one large yam, cut crosswise into coins.
Bake at 350 for about 10 minutes
      2. Make a pizza crust, or, sure, dakine, use a Boboli. Generously spread crust with tomato sauce. Sprinkle with dried basil, rosemary and oregano (or an Italian blend).
      3. Sprinkle a good heaping cup or two of shredded mozzarella. Yah, make it two.
      4. Lay down the yam "coins" as you would pepperoni.
      5. Sprinkle one 8 oz drained can of chopped pineapple.
      6. Generously sprinkle chopped garlic on top.
      7. Bake at 450 degrees 15+ minutes or until cheese is bubbly.

So get your Sprinkle on and try this vegetarian treat!

  3. I'm really trying to figure out this post, Rich. Beat poetry? Free-association? Are you stoned? Reading modernist literature? I need Cliff Notes!

  4. Will you be there when they come to the Bay Area? (My neighbor scored tickets or $180 as part of a very limited deal where the first of so many people who logged on on a certain day at a certain time could get good seats cheap. I heard his whoopies from my house with the windows closed.)

  5. I'm 9:03 replying to 10:06 who replied to my thoughts on Gil. Yes, I agree with your assement, and you are right about Tom Sullivan, he has a good sense of humor, and he is not way out there to the right, althought at times he lets caller get away with outrageous statements. I have listened to him since the late nineties, when I lived in Benicia and he was on a local Sacramento station. He is not bombastic like Rush, or too simple and transparent like Hannity, paranoid like Glenn Beck or angry all the time like Mike Savage. As for letting 910 know our dissatisfaction with their programming, we have to continue to e-mail them and let them know who we like and who we don't. I let them know I was pleased when the hired John, Ed Baxter and yes Gil. I wrote them again when the fired Len Tillem, and let them know that 4 hours of Gil Gross is too much, especially in the current format. I will continue to e-mail and let me know what I like and don't like. Would love to see Gil's rating. Do you have that RIch? How do they compare to John Rothman when he was on?

  6. What are we to make of headlines?
    --I told you.

    Do real people eat tofu?
    --I do. Often.

Is it sacrilegious to say you don't care?
    --No. AND I don't give a fuck.

Why do people put pineapple on pizza?
    --I don't. I'm from Jersey; not Hawai'i.

Channel 2 paranoia and KPIX dysfunction.
    --Never watch.

Managers get promoted and get to be consultants.
--Consultants are less common than you think these down, and most managers, at least in this business, get fired once they make cash.

Why do you all aggravate yourself? I don't want to cause you ill health.
--You don't have my job, so it's hard for you to understand...

I think a good burger is grilled, not fried.
--I think they're both good, but I don't eat a lot of meat.

Was there an issue about some athlete coming out?
    --dumb.

    "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"
    --dumber.

  7. Pretty brave of you, Rich, censoring my comment about the Gosnell trial.

Of course your stories about tofu are more important than highlighting the liberal murder factory.

We can't let people make up their own minds, now can we?

  8. Rich's heavy censoring is really annoying. He keeps spouting rationalizations but the essential reason is his thin-skin and insecurity.
