Dennis Richmond of KTVU was known for his steady, non-chit-chat approach. It worked well for him, (and millions of other Bay Area TV news viewers); Frank Somerville has tried to maintain the Richmond-style approach, although he talks a bit more.
The late Dave McElhatton was quite the opposite. More of a conversationalist. And too, Pete Wilson. Both were extremely popular.
Van Amburg was also one to deliver the news straight but was passionate about the content. Which reminds me, a question for you all: what type of news anchor, (male or female), do you like? A straight-forward approach, simple and steady or do like more personality and conversation?
I realize the nature of the story being read dictates the delivery. You're not going to find most anchors chortling over a shooting or some terrorist incident obviously; I'm talking about general news and delivery.
