John Rothmann; Un-Civil Discourse; Nurses are Great; A few Easter Sunday Media Notes

Just a few notes and comments...

*It is indeed sad, as a number of commenters have noted, that John Rothmann hasn't landed a permanent position at NewsTalk 910. Rothmann, as I have noted numerous times here, is a brilliant, informed, astute and knowledgeable political analyst. No matter what side of the aisle you're on.

Rothmann is no-nonsense. A deep thinker with a wealth of ideas on the Middle East, politics, Presidential history and a great interviewer. Even better, he's honest to his dedicated listeners and doesn't yell or scream or have to pander to people by shouting or using inane sound effects.

Rothmann reminds me a lot of KQED's Michael Krasny, himself a quality broadcaster who also provides a sophisticated Bay Area audience with intelligent radio and first-rate guests. There's a market here for that type of content, believe it or not.

Here's hoping Rothmann can get a gig soon and I do believe he will.

*Some of you have written comments; including a well-known, part-timer broadcaster and full-time lawyer, that have strayed far from the first topic at hand. I appreciate the passion and dedication, but it serves no purpose other than constant bickering and attacks. I'm not signaling out anybody or anyone in particular, but frankly, some of it gets juvenile and therefore, I have deleted a lot of the comments.

I have no issues with passionate comments and criticizing various people or individuals but keep it central to the topic and most importantly, keep it civil. Believe me, the last few weeks I've had, most of it is really trivial anyway. Don't sweat the small stuff. Trust me.

*Finally, again, I want to thank ALL of you who have sent get-well wishes to my Mom. She's doing better but faces a tough road ahead but that's OK, Mom is tough. And really, you don't know how much it helps to hear from you.

*By the way, nurses are great. Nurses are heroes and deserve all the money in the world. Without nurses, we're all mush. Just my two cents.

Have a very safe, healthy, and happy Easter.

  1. Rich: I concur with you on John Rothman. I always love talking politics and Presidential history with him. We could talk for hours. He's so knowledgeable, engaging and well-spoken - a walking history book, and a genuinely nice man. I hope he finds another radio gig, and soon! Cheers John!

  2. I'd like to hear Mr. Rothmann debate a Noam Chomsky or a Norman Finkelstein, but in all of the years I listened to his show on KGO, I can't remember him ever taking on any such heavyweights. What is he afraid of?

  4. What does that have to do with anything? John provide a fairly middle of the road, (although left leaning)commen sense, intelligent thought provoking program, why does he have to debate 2 extremely left leaning personalities to prove himself. Lots of talk show host don't have a lot of guests on, Gene Burns never did, Rush (although I don't listen never or rarely) Sean Hannity all the time, Mike Savage never, Norm Goldman rarely, each hosts has a format that works for them, they can't cater to every listeners whim, I think John can hold his own with anyone, but as far as I know these 2 are hardcore idelog, there is no debating with people like that, same with Rush and Mike Savage, they are just not interested in other peoples opinion.

    1. Well, he most certainly did have a lot of guests on his KGO program, but he steered well clear of anyone he knew would speak out knowledgeably and forcefully about the Israel-Palestine conflict--unless they were pro-Israel, of course.

It's so much easier to label those you disagree with as "hardcore" and run away from debating them than it would be to sit down and debate the issues. I imagine Mr. Rothmann thought better about having Mr Finkelstein on after he proved Alan Dershowitz to be a fraud in their now-famous debate. Mr Dershowitz was always welcome to come on and spout Israeli propaganda.

    2. John was always very willing to debate callers on issues he disagreed, with including anti Israel, or is it anti semitism? I can't always tell, I'm for a two state solution, but also pro Israel (I lived there for a few months it is a beautiful country, with wonderful people)have known several Palastian's as well, through work and business associates, have found them to be very warm and hospitable people. However I cannot, nor can anyone else debate anyone that thinks Israel does not have a right their land. Just because I'm pro Israel, does not mean I or anyone else, is anti Palastians, nor does it mean that everything Israel does is the right thing to do. I define hardcore as someone who is so set in their belief that they will not listen, or otherwise entertain another point of view. You can find them on the left and the right as well.

  5. Thank you so much, Rich, for mentioning Michael Krasny. I love his show and love much of the NPR programming.

Please DO NOT censor Christine Craft! She's a voice of Sensible in the whirlpool of trolls who post on your blog.

    1. Christine is NOT being censored, nor is anyone else. What I have done is to STOP the endless comments, remarks, insults, that are NOT central to the topic and become tiresome. I encourage and wish that people post, but post on issues relevant to the story, that's all.

And thanks for the note about Mom.

    2. Why is Rich such a control freak about comments on this blog???

Let people read what they want and decide for themselves how they feel about it. Sadly Rich doesn't realize how offensive it is for him to shape the opinions expressed here. The name for that is censorship.

    3. A "control freak?" I think you need to read the room.

    4. No need to read the room when I can read your own words. You make it clear that you pick and choose which comments you'll display based on nothing but your own subjective criteria.

That degree of insecurity about controlling the expressions of others makes you a control freak.

    3. Another lame analogy from Christine. Just mentioning Pipp's name to suggest you have extensive knowledge is pointless when there's no relevance.

      Delete
    4. The Wally Pip story is hardly arcane. It's as American as apple pie, or rather, I should say, two aspirins. Perhaps you could research the tale, and stretch your brain on the meaning of "relevance"
My father, a navy captain and coach and onetime NCAA discus champ told me many such stories during my lifetime and during the fourteen years I was his sole caretaker until he died at age 92. Some people felt sorry for me because I had no "social life",no "parties" etc. during that period. We did however have a blast talking about all kinds of things, including Wally Pip. I have no regrets for that long goodbye .

      Delete
    5. Christine,
I will say this politely because Rich objects to rude discourse.

All those things about your father are very nice but totally uncalled for except in your endless, self promotions as some sort of heroic martyr. If you were really comfortable about your relationship with your father it wouldn't be necessary to toot your own horn and brag about what a wonderful, self-sacrificing, daughter you were.

Also the diatribe about you and your father are oddly disconnected of the issue at hand.

The question wasn't whether the story of Wally Pipp is arcane, the point was the senselessness of you calling 3:07 Wally Pipp. There was nothing about his comment that relates to Wally Pipp's famous history. And I repeat my claim that you dropped Wally Pipp's name merely to create the mistaken impression that you know more than you do.

Oh, and by the way Christine, his name was Pipp not Pip.

    6. As one of the first American women to be hired to do sports reporting at the network level(CBS Sports Spectacular),long before any court case, I can tell you that I wasn't hired because I was a beauty queen. I was pretty, cute, but not too pretty. I was hired, after they saw of tape of me fillng in for Wayne Walker at KPIX.(their affiliate). I didn't send them anything. I was hired because I had been a competitor in one sport(surfing), had television cred, and knew something about sports. I don't present myself as having an encyclopedic knowledge of all things sweaty and never have. There are many sports tales however, that have terrific applicability to the rest of life, as you probably know, yes?
Today I have to wonder at all the men (coaches, players and others) boo hoo hooing like women they berate for crying, because Kevin Ware incurred a compound fracture. His injury is being described alternatively as "gruesome", "grisly", and "horrific".
Actually millions of Americans sustain compound leg fractures every year. They are painful and hard to look at, usually as the result of trauma. Nurses deal with them, without crying, ever.
I'm guessing Kevin Ware hurt like hell at first, then was in shock and feeling very little, then got a nice morphine push and is now feeling far less pain than Rich's mom with bruised ribs.
Why do men cry over this stuff? Is it the gambling loss? The idea that young humans can suffer injury in sporting contests?
It would have been grisly if his guts had suddenly burst from his belly or some such truly horrific thing..but a compound fracture? really?
My uncle, Elder Craft, a boxing referee who officiated 15,000 matches, including some very famous ones, saw worse than that in the ring. He never cried.

    10. The lesson of Wally Pip(p) applies to many things. The man was a very good ballplayer. He got a headache one day and stayed home from work. His fill-in (Lou Gehrig) was an even better ballplayer. The lesson is that in both sports and broadcasting and a host of other occupations, staying home sick is not always a good idea. The person who takes your place, may end up taking your place. Wally said those were the two most expensive aspirin he ever took. I thought one fill-in on KGO this past weekend was better than many regulars I've heard, Greg Gory. Did you catch him on the air? He's bright and quick, well-researched and provocative, with a solid voice and a pleasant manner. I'd like to hear more of him. I don't know him. I was impressed.

    13. Dear 11:12..If I were you, I'd be disconcerted about the quality of medical training I received before becoming a psychiatrist. I said that I had a blast with my dad, and didn't regret any of it. Where's the martyrdom claim? Did you pull it from your nether parts?
I'm an only child and was close to both parents. My dad's side of the family was quite sporty and I inherited that gene. This is a bad thing? Something of which to be ashamed? I think not. Whether it was being his mini cheerleader when he coached football and I was four, hanging out and shooting baskets in the back of our house on the 8th green at Spyglass in later years, or here in Sack of tomatoes cheering on every win of my dad's favorite team, the Angels as they won the world serious in 2002...it was all a blast. Other people thought I would have preferred going to parties, but they were wrong. I've been to many parties in my lifetime, but the Angels only won one series in 42 years. I'm glad it happened before my dad croaked. I'm sure we were quite loud, cheering and shaking the rally monkeys. Believe me, we didn't feel like martyrs at all.

I hope you have as much fun as I did caring for your elderly parents or having your kid(s) care for you. They will do that, won't they?

Christine's problem is that her opinions on any subject matter are shaped by two things and two things only: her irrational love of killer dogs and her victimhood complex due to being born a woman. We could be discussing hemorrhoids and somehow she will insert pitbulls and/or her infamous lawsuit from last century in to the discussion.

All of these things store this thing called MUSIC...without those annoying other things called "Commercials" (I vaguely recall these things from back in the 20th century--where guys or gals talks/scream while pitching a product; sorta like what Talk Radio does.)

Wonder would have happened if Gene had not gotten sick, and would have been able to do the show as planned. Gene and Len was the first 2 ex KGO host 910 hired. I assumed they did that because those two had the highest ratings. Don't know how John Rothman and Gil's ratings compared? 1. John Rothmann didn't have a regular full-time gig on KKSF Newstalk 910. He had been hosting a daily 80-second political commentary and last year provided coverage on election night. Rich says he'll still be a fill-in host for Gil Gross. Ed Baxter had a similar arrangement with his occasional short commentaries that aired on KKSF. So their "firings" from KKSF really doesn't amount to much.

  21. NEWS TALK 910 ROCKS!April 1, 2013 at 10:51 AM

John Rothmann is incredibly brilliant and provides deeply insightful analysis in his commentaries. Sometimes he's a little too tightly wound, but I love him all the same! Sorry to see him leave KKSF.

Ed Baxter's occasional commentaries won't be missed with his departure from Newstalk 910. Not that they're not interesting or worthwhile; he posts them on his own website.

Len Tillem, "the loyah," was simply running out of steam. After you've listened to him for a week (two at the most), you've heard it all. And nothing is worse than when he spends a full hour talking about living estates, trusts and wills--all to drum up business for himself and Pat Vitucci. Boring! Many posters here, understandably, haven't been pleased with his frequent absences. He had one too many "best of" reruns for my taste. I won't miss him.

Gil Gross has no peers, and I commend 910 management's decision to expand his program by one hour daily. I love Fridays because his wife Rhoda joins him and it makes for a lively discussion.

Gil Gross is arguably the Bay Area's consummate news-talk radio personality. He's in love with the sound of his voice, and so are we, truth be told. I like the fast-paced format of his show, quickly changing topics, as well as the interviews with Politico reporters adding considerable depth to Gil's spot on analysis of the news. The "Dumb Criminals" segment on Thursdays is hilarious! His Saturday afternoon "Real Estate Today" program aired nationally and on KSFO "Hot Talk 560" in the Bay Area is outstanding.

I will still be listening to Rich Lieberman, "Lieberman Live," on the Rich Lieberman show on Watsonville's KOMY 1340 for a full two hours before switching to Gil Gross at 3 p.m.

    1. Correction. I did not. I said that the three hosts who were off air took the Easter holiday, but didn't include Karel, who in fact was on the air, and who like me, I believe, it Atheist.

But while I'm here, I find it so many things that people choose to call someone like Maureen a "bitch", or anyone else a number of names.

The problem with it all is no one here has any balls to call it like it is. People who hate on me, I'm totally cool with it. It's kind of hilarious because I'm sure you a) can't do what I do b) can't get on air c) couldn't do a show if you could get on the air and d) can't actually make a specific critique to what it is you don't like.

This goes for the other shows as well. Most of you can't do what these people do, and if you could, you would be doing it! At least Rich is doing it, so he has every right, at least as far as I'm concerned, to call something as he sees it. His opinion comes from a place of knowledge, regardless of what you think of how he performs.

That said, I've seen mentioned on here a few times how it'd be nice of people had to register a profile. I almost always signature my name, at the very least. This would only limit the discussion on the page, that's for sure, but at least some of you would, on some level, have to expose yourselves. Then again, when it comes to me, I know who you are anyway. And I take it as a compliment.

And truth is, if I were you I'd hate me to. you probably have very good reason to be concerned...

As for calling people "bitch" or any number of names, get a life already, keyboard tough guy/gal (definitely a guy). If you have something to say to someone, say it to them. You know I would.

This is a radio message board. There are what, 100 active people reading it? None of it is going to change what happens to any of our lives, but at least show a little civility. And if you're a radio professional, act like one. Maybe try and tell someone what you'd like to hear differently, rather than call the person a "bitch" or "buffoon."

      -DW

P.S. I am interested in what people think is good or bad on the show I do. Personally, I am a massive critic of myself. I find very little good in what I'm doing, but likely not for the reasons some of you might think. What I have done comes naturally to me; it's not hard. But there are certain holes that I'm unable to fill, which are hard to explain.

When I was on the air in New Jersey I didn't engage callers at all. I did 6 days a week live. 5 mornings, 1 weekend. The weekend show didn't get a lot of callers because I don't think I reached out to callers much. I'm trying to do that better, but not sure if I'm doing a good enough job at all.

So, feel free to hit me up: kgodavid@gmail.com

    2. The premise that one can not criticize you unless one has a radio show is asinine. By the same logic, one could say when you do your show, you are unqualified to criticize politicians since you never held any political office. Makes no sense at all. That is the problem with your ilk (amateurs) Weintraub! You can not be taken seriously at all.

      Delete
    3. You seem smart.

You can criticize, and I'm guessing that's all you do because your life is fulfilled. Again, I'm guessing. I'm just saying that I don't really take you seriously, in as much as I would Rich, and that no one really offers specifics as to what's bad or good. I did not preclude others from doing so outside of what I just wrote. Of note, I don't really take my message board self seriously either. But for those that do know me, whether or not you like me is really dependent on whether I want you to. Everyone who knows me knows this.

As for amateur, I've been in this business for well over a decade, on and off, and on-air for over 5 years in different capacities, as well as having worked in TV, politics, and am a published author. But I'm not here to discuss my creds, etc. That's actually useless.

But to your point, whether someone is on the air for a day, or a lifetime, is hardly relevant. In fact, it flies in the face of your own retarded comment in that I should be taken seriously, or not seriously, depending on your momentary angle because I'm saying something. That's right, based on your logic, you can't take me seriously, or not, whether or not I'm an amateur or a lifelong pro. Do you get it? Do you see how you're a moron? I do.

I'm well aware that speaking here is in a vacuum. I don't think Rich is under delusions otherwise. This is merely fun for me; mental exercises, etc. Reading about one's self, etc., is fun. It won't change me. I'll continue to post as me, and you'll continue to hide, like everyone else at 55 who is on here, or those of you idling elsewhere. Hey, at least Baker posts as himself...half the time...

(btw, the half the time move is a good move because it's as if you do it all the time, but you really don't...)

But for all these hosts many of you pine for, regardless of who it is, how many are making an impact? Which of these great hosts is getting offers elsewhere? This is the 3rd biggest media market in the country. Is someone in Miami calling? Charlotte? New Orleans? People are available! Or are people trying to bounce from station to station, hoping to survive? Where is this talent? Certainly, we agree, I'm not it, so who is it? Who are these great hosts of past who are going to change the Bay Area?

I have had people from all over the country listen to the hosts in the Bay Area just so I can get a better understanding of things myself. The responses haven't been great. I've talked to Monty, Brian, Pat, Ron, Maureen, all their producers, the board ops, the news people, Paul, Jared, my bosses at Cumulus (btw, I work for the network), etc about nearly every host. The responses are underwhelming...(continued)

Sure, someone thinks Gil is great, or Len is great, or Gene Burns was great, love Ron, hate Ron, love Bernie, etc. etc. Great. Fantastic. Where's that conversation getting any of these people, or bay area radio?

Is there a real belief that KGO shouldn't be trying out new things, new people, different perspectives? Be it Maureen, Monty, myself, Greg Gory, Candace Delong, whomever? How can they not? The hosts of the past, and that's what they are, aren't impactful enough to make a dent. Plus, the world is getting younger, rapidly, and that perspective needs to be tapped because the decision makers are quickly becoming under 30 here in the Bay.

This isn't about what KGO was because that's done. It's about figuring out what it can be going forward.

So whether I'm the "amateur" you don't like, or someone else, it's all just nonsense, as is this post. It's us talking to us. It's few of you having the balls (i know, some of you, like the respondent above, don't actually have balls) to own your comments, and even fewer of you being able to point out what it is you like about a host, or dislike.

Meanwhile, I'll continue to get my reps, I'll continue to do what I do. I'll continue to steal your fucken handy wipes, and your Diet Colas, and ass hand your keyboards, and check your histories to see when you last posted on this site, and blah blah blah blah, shut the fuck up already and stop bitching.

You want something different? Be that something. Do something about it. I did.

And will again, Sunday at 10p. Thanks. - DW
