Oscars 2013: Seth MacFarlane -- worst Oscar host ever?

Paging David Letterman, Larry King, or Howard Stern.

  1. Terrible jokes. The bit are not funny at all (especially the Boobs song). It was cool to see Shatner as Kirk again, but it went too long. Not creative. So far, he is bombing really bad, but seriously, besides spending all the time to come up with an opening act, what does a host really do? The rest of the show he is introducing presenters.

  2. I turned off the show after the crude "boobs" song. Hope others did the same.

  3. Just who in the hell did this dude have to sleep with to be the MC of this years Oscars!?!?

  4. This is what happens when someone in Hollywood is 'hot". McFarland is nothing more than a writer of a cartoon and a mediocre movie. Fart jokes and getting stoned only goes so far. I hope The Academy takes a look at how utterly bad this clown is and hires someone with a little class.

  5. Seth MacFarlaine is the worst ANYTHING ever. His show is stupid and repetitive, ditto his movie with the bear. The guy thinks he has talent, which is the most frightening thing of all, and so does Mila Kunis, apparently. Either that, or she has "daddy issues."

  6. Makes me nostalgic for Uma/Oprah skit.

  7. Clooney and his annoying, self congratulatory smirk is infuriating. Even worse are the idiots who hold Oscar parties with their own red carpets alas Karel...

  8. C'mon... Ted was great. It was awesome he made an appearance. Shirley Bassie who is in her late 70's belted it out with Goldfinger. I'm not a fan of that atheist Seth McFarland but I thought it was hilarious how he took jabs at douchebag Ben Affleck. And why no memorial for Andy Griffith. Andy got snubbed !!! WTF?!?!?!?!

    1. And for the 2nd straight year they left out Corey Haim and Farrah Fawcett!
      Oh the inhumanity!

  9. I miss Billy Crystal as host. The show was ok, I liked the Captain Kirk segment, although it went too long. I hated the stupid boob song. I loved Barbra Streisand (the best female singer of all time, IMHO). I am glad Argo won best picture (I enjoyed the movie, Carter is an asshole with his recent comments -- nothing new there), Daniel Day-Lewis best actor for Lincoln (what a humble man, how refreshing), Christoph Waltz (best supporting for Django Unchained) -- loved him in Inglourious Basterds, and Django Unchained for best original screenplay (you go QT -- I loved Pulp Fiction). Hey, I like movies, and my wife is in SAG.

  10. There are so few classy people anymore...This should tell you something about where our society is now.

  11. Why make a whole skit about being the worst host ever? He must have anticipated the reaction and decided to highlight it. I thought it was terribly self-regarding.

This year's Oscars was badly produced and very chopped up. There was little coherence in the awards and everything seemed out of kilter. Except Jean Dujardin, always a classy man.

  12. I thought MacFarlaine did a fairly good job, he' no Johnny Carson but then who is? I loved seeing the expressions on the faces of the actresses in the audience during the 'boob' song that was great.

I'm very happy for Ang Lee and Life of Pi the movie that turned out to be the 'sleeper' of the night.

I agree, it was "G'd awful" to watch last night.

  14. McFarlane was fine as host. Anybody pining for the Billy Crystal days needs to spend more time worrying about what AARP has to say about developments in motorized-chairs-to-haul-you-upstairs technology.

  15. Andy Griffith, Director Gore Vidal and Larry Hagman snubbed during Oscars in Memoriam Tribute?????...BULLSHIT! Andy Griffith's "A Face In The Crowd" is probably one of movie's best acting performances ever and to snub him?
The show sucked. Babs singing memories...YAWN...
Oh yeah...Les Miz is such a better film than Ben Asslick's Argo. Les Miz will live on and on and Argo will be forgotten just like films as "The English Patient", "Crash", "Million $ Baby", "The Hurt Locker", "The King's Speech"...and the list goes on and on.

    1. my favorite movie ever, "A Face in the Crowd"...agree completely at the snub of Andy Griffith, Gore Vidal, and Larry Hagman.

Babs looks the best of her life, but I have never been able to stand her caterwauling.

  16. I enjoyed Seth as host. From what I hear the country is divided 50/50. For all the "he sucks, wow horrible!" comments there are an equal amount of "fantastic! best in years!". What annoyed me was Ms. Bangs at the end giving best picture. I've never seen a first lady milk her position more via publicity and vacations than her.

    1. You haven't? Were you born yesterday? First family vacations are de riguer throughout modern history. Did you object when george's wife took the twins to Paris?
Did you think Ronald Reagan's frequent stays in Santa Ynez were privately funded? When Jackie and John Jr. and Caroline skied at Gstaad or surveyed Ankor Wat that there was no taxpayer expense.
what is the basis for your objection to people with bangs? precisely? do you think that only you should be allowed to decide who cuts bangs?
Most of the country paid no attention whatsoever to the Oscars.

    2. Christine did you realize there was an audible groan coming out of the backstage press area when she appeared on screen?

I believe the latest numbers to come out are 40 million+ Americans watched the Oscars.

I could list her countless excursions at everyone's expense, but for sake of brevity I will just state a few facts about "this" month's vacation.
One couple, two taxpayer funded vactions. First Lady Michelle Obama plans to vacation in Aspen, Colorado this Presidents’ Day weekend, separately from her husband, who will land this evening in West Palm Beach for his own down time with the boys. According to Aspen newspapers, both Michelle and Vice President Biden are expected on the slopes. Michelle’s separate excursion from the president means that, even as the government prepares to slash spending as the March 1 sequester approaches, taxpayers will be footing the bill for two separate Obama vacations, paying for items like travel and the expensive security and staff entourages that accompany them everywhere.

And yes, they both just got back from an extensive and expensive Hawaii vacation.

  18. I'm trying to play nice. I'm trying to be objective about MooChelle, (Oops, I meant Michelle) crashing that party. Yet another Look At Me moment. I know I didn't want to see her or her 'husband' either.

Don't even 'you people' (meaning dem. devotees and sympathizers) get tired of those two poking their noses into every aspect of our lives? I trying to recall how I would've felt in Old America, if, say Lady Bush (either one) had insisted on being televised and seen, recorded and heard, scheduled and waited on or waited for as much as Mrs. Obama. Different kinds of women, for sure.

Not everything is going to be related ,to which party they belong to.
I think if Mrs. O were a Libertarian or even a Green, she would still be an onstage, face to face type of person. Maybe the first lady of today's world gets to chose for herself how she wishes to be remembered to some degree. That's fine, just use more of your own private money for your chain-linked private vacations, please. Believe you me, Mrs. O, you have already indelibly etched a catalog of 'images' into our collective plebian brains, we don't require any more visual prompts to form our opinion of you.

    1. I'm more tired of people like you who make EVERY SINGLE CONVERSATION into an anti-Obama rant. We get it, you don't like them or their politics. Guess what? Unless your beloved Republicans can actually find something and PROVE that he should be impeached, he'll be there another four years and then he'll be gone. If history repeats itself, the next Prez will probably be a Republican. Take a f***ing breath, relax and move on, already. I can imagine you sitting around the dinner table asking the kids how their day was, and when one of them says there wasn't enough balls at recess for everybody to play you just start screaming about "THAT DAMN OBAMA!!!!"

If Michelle Obama is appearing on the Oscars, she's not forcing anybody to get gay-married while having an abortion or whatever other nonsense FOX tells you they believe in. Relax, you'll live longer.

    2. Actually Laura Bush ("Lady Bush" as you put it) did appear in the 2002 show. And Ronald Reagan in 1981 too.
Did you get your panties in a wad back then too or is this just some bias you have against our current President?

    4. San Rafael is just a very frustrated Obama hater who recently had his lunch handed to him after his previous Obama smear below:
      http://richliebermanreport.blogspot.com/2013/02/kgo-tvs-ashley-gets-white-house-exclu.html#comment-form

Poor guy tends to make up facts to bolster his anti-Obama agenda. (Claims he's paying $6/gallon for gas, thanks to Obama) and that Obama has raised taxes for 40% of Americans)

    5. White House support for the arts. Thanks, I needed a good laugh today.

      Is that Moochelle or Mooch-chelle?

    6. At Princeton they called her Michelle. At Harvard Law, they called her Michelle. When she was vice-president of the University of Chicago Hospital Group, they called her Michelle. Her husband calls her Michelle, as do her friends. Her daughters call her mommy. You call her a racist name, don't you. Why is that?

      Delete
    7. That's a pretty strong accusation accusing someone of racism.

I don't see how calling someone a Mooch due to her lavish lifestyle on the taxpayer's dime is in any way racist?

      Delete
    8. Of course it is. Anything negative about Obama is racist. Silly person.

      Delete
    9. Let's keep these Obama hater claims straight:

Christine at 8:17 wasn't calling anyone a racist. She was observing that Obama hater (at 9:41 pm) taunting name suggestion "Moochelle" has an obvious racial implication.

Obama hater at 10:05: There is nothing lavish about the Obama lifestyle, which is certainly not beyond the life style of previous Presidents. Yes, all Presidents and their families receive funding from the US taxpayers. To criticize the Obamas for living "on the taxpayer's dime" is as idiotic as criticizing soldiers serving in Afghanistan for living "on the taxpayer's dime."

    12. Lieberman supporter @5:28, I stand corrected.
It was-established Obama hater, San Rafael, who introduced the offensive "MooChelle" reference at 11:44.

Obama hater (at 9:41)/alias level headed reader at 9:41, was merely expanding on San Rafael's earlier.

  21. Unfortunately, being crude is what it's all about in entertainment these days. Just look at how low 90 year old Betty White has sunk just to stay relevant.

    1. Betty white has always done some raunchy humor..from her earliest days. Double-entendre is and always has been a staple of comedy. See Shakespeare.

    2. Right on, Christine!

Here's a famous one from the Mary Tyler Moore show where Betty White played the delicious Sue Ann Nivens:

" I was lying in bed last night and I couldn't sleep, and I came up with an idea. So I went right home and wrote it down."

      Or this one:

Murray:Being fired is like being violated!
Sue Ann:Leave it to Murray to find a bright spot in all this.

  22. Seth M is funny at what he does, but is not the right match for the Oscars. They need to find a smart comic film actor/actress and then have someone write jokes for them that are appropriate to the occassion.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The Best thing about the Oscars was beautiful 76-year-old Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger"--My Favorite Bond Song of all time!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think it's funny that some think the First Lady called up the Oscars folks demanding to present the Best Picture" But I won't let reality interfere with your delusion.
I could see Billy Crystal doing the same jokes and being called charming and puckish - but since Macfarlane doesn't have the "history" with the Oscars, it comes off as smarmy.

Thought it was a bit self-indulgent though. Two of the show's producers musicals featured in the pretty random musical segment? Not to mention that all three were taken from Broadway?

The film compilations weren't well edited, particularly the Bond one.

And they should have had Streisand sing Memories over the In Memoriam clips - the sound bites added nothing.

  25. I really like Seth as the host. He was funny, talented, and just generally likeable. The Oscar gig is horrible because all people want to do is criticize the host and pine about Billy Crystal.
Someone above says that he is no Johnny Carson. I don't remember Johnny being foolish enough to host the Oscars. Also, Johnny couldn't sing and dance and Seth can. Great job of hosting.

  27. I wasn't expecting much from him, so maybe that's why I was pleasantly surprised. Sock puppet bit was excellent, 'Argo was so top secret, that the movie's director is unknown to the academy'-excellent! Sure some things fell flat, and I was aghast at 'we saw your boobs' but was laughing out loud at the song's reference to Kate Winslet, because it's true. AND the guy can sing!

The cast of Les Miserables belting it out & Streisand's 'The Way We Were' were my favorite performances.

Overall, a very entertaining show for me.

  28. Based on the pressure any first time host would be under tackling that job, I think he was outstanding. The Star Trek piece was a tad long but it was brilliant.. The "Boobs" and "Here's to the losers" show tune productions were updated and "Classic Hollywood".. Hey, the guy is funny, can write, deliver one liners, sing, dance, is a handsome dude and under 40. Currently he has no peer with the same talent package and he will only get better..

    ReplyDelete
  29. Carson did host the Oscars, several times, and was totally outstanding at it. Which he was still around. I guess they tried Letterman, but he was not very good, so I guess they won't be asking any more night time hosts. I think most folks don't want to do it because it seems to reflect negatively on their careers.
