Ex-KNBR PD Bob Agnew hired as new PD of LA's KLAA

Bob Agnew, who brought the sports talk format to KNBR way back in 1989, has landed a gig at LA's KLAA. The station is the flagship outlet for the LA Angels. Agnew is PD.

Agnew devised a highly successful format that was foreign turf to many Bay Area radio listeners. His plan to format sports talk during the day, at the time, seemed illogical but became a very successful venture and vaulted KNBR into the sports domain.

Not all of his business savvy worked.

Agnew was fired in 2005 from KNBR over an incident involving racial slurs about Giants manager, Felipe Alou. The slurs were broadcast by Larry Krueger, also was also let go.

Krueger was rehired in August, 2011.

  1. This is why the government had to enact laws of equal opportunity. Because Agnew and Krueuger are pure good old boys. Rehired, and with Krueger,no thought to the Latin Giants players or community.
I give Kreuger points he manned up for what he did, even as Radnich the accomplished liar continues to blame the victim.
Did you hear that fucking hypocrite on KRON Radnich, say his critics are (putdowns here)? and as he wound up- he got off camera signs to cut the nut rant "Uh,in other news"..as he returned to reality.
Radnich who rips people all day and laughs at them while doing it, is a virtual paid whore for negative rips. He does it for money, not ethics or belief. He complains about internet critics???. He takes, no cruises- that hypocrisy to the bank.

    1. Learn to write coherent English Stan.

What you've written here seems to suggest that the various government equal opportunity acts were enacted because of Bob Agnew and Larry Krueger, which of course is wrong. Also ridiculous because both Agnew and Krueger were fired for what Krueger said and DID NOT INVOLVE ANY ISSUE of discrimination against a protected class of employees.

Of course you finish with your obligatory Radnich hate gibberish which is incomprehendable for anyone not living inside your troubled mind.

    2. Your tag of "Fair and balanced" tells me your very unbalanced. Only a idiot like you would use that disgraced title.
Stupid fucking moron..Yeah,KNBR and 2005 was the reason laws in 1965 were enacted with a time machine. It was the rehire Caucasian treadmill that was the point.
Why do I get all the nuts to respond?

    3. The 4:48 post probably reads better while wearing a tin foil hat.

      Box score

      Game: final
      F&B: 1 hit, 1 run
      4:48: -0- hits, -0- runs

    1. As the editor in chief, Dr. Hernandez was above Agnew who was the sports editor. What are your thoughts STAN!? Your conspiracy theories seem more shallow than ever.

    2. LOL,Dr.Hernandez will tell you that the CSU system NEVER even interviewed a Latino for college president at Hayward/Eastbay. They went with Mo!.and again,in a city 60 % Latino..left out after Mo left!.
He likes Bob. Good for him.

  3. AGNEW BACK IN THE SWIM- GOOD NEWS FOR LA SPORTS FANS!

Bob Agnew deserved another chance to be a PD and I'm glad he got it. Agnew just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time during the whole 'Kruger-gate' fiasco, or whatever they want to call it. Take it from someone who knew Agnew well and worked with him at KNBR for many years; this guy was the heart and soul of KNBRT and pretty much made it what it was, despite what Tony Salvadore might want to tell you.

Agnewkept things 'buzzing' at KNBR as we were always doing something exciting and different, as he was always proactive and had an open door. You could always go into his office at any time and talk with him and while you might not sometimes like what you heard back from the guy, Bob would listen respectfully before offering you his outlook on things.

When KNBR got rid of him, they made a HUGE mistake, just as they did getting rid of a number of other people that they've cut loose over the years. I'm glad to see that Bob Agnew will be getting another chance to weave his special radio sports magic with another station down south!

  4. what exactly did Kreuger say that was of offensive that he and Agnew got the axe? as i remember hearing it he was lambasting the Giants (the '05 variety) for 'hacking at slop'. he identified the slop hackers (who indeed WERE hacking at slop) as Caribbeans. when Larry apologized Felipe Alou would have nothing of it, was relentlessly unforgiving and led the charge for their firing. will Kreuger ever live it down? i mean, sheesh! it's not like he freaking killed somebody is it?

  5. Kruger ended up very nicely back at KNBR and now stands to be there for a long time, taking over for Radnich whenever they decide to dump Gary to save money.

Essentially, the story is that Kruger was temporarily suspended for using the term: "Brain dead Caribbeans swinging at slop nightly," and that this flummoxed manager Felipe Alou so much that he had a brain that Larry said had turned to "cream of wheat."

The whole thing would have died down and gone away if the morning crew the following Monday, specifically a clueless board ope and a naive host Brian Murphy hadn't been so foolish to replay Felipe Alou's incendiary remarks on ESPN in which he called Kruger 'an agent of Satan!' Murphy and his producer then foolishly made a joke about it by playing a 'church-lady' cut from the South Park TV show. As you can imagine, that really upset the Giants and set the ball rolling for several firings at KNBR.

    1. OK. thanks so much for refreshing my memory a bit on this!

    2. Radnich never mentioned that. Huh.

    3. Not exactly Anon @8:03,

Kruger nationalized what he said by saying "brain dead DOMINICANS swinging at slop nightly". Well, Felipe Alou is Dominican and also took offense at being called stupid via Krugers'"cream of wheat" remark. The insertion of Dominican was unnecessary - insert any other nationality into that statement and it's a slur just the same which shouldn't be allowed on the radio, the use of Caribbeans would have been offensive as well. Okay for Kruger to say in private, among friends and non-mixed company, but broadcast that bs on the radio, no way in hell.

    4. he never said dominicans...he said caribeans...prob was...everyone, not just the caribeans, were free swingers

and the cream of wheat comment was not meant as a racial slur, as krueger spent almost 30 minutes prior to the rant, praising alou for doing the best job that he could

i heard the rant and the entire show....and krueger was told to go nuts

alou would never have even heard the comments, had someone....errr...current giants prez...not left the tape on his desk

and despite the rant, krueg was on target with his criticisms of the org, going all the way back to 02....

    5. 1257,just another KNBR idiot. "He was right"..the Giants have won TWO world series with Caribbean players in key roles.
And learn to spell 'Caribbean' and 'Dominican'. Just stupid all over aren't you?

      Delete
    6. did i say the caribbean comment was correct? eff the spelling police

all the way back to 02, kruegs criticisms were about the org not developing as caliber position players and overpaying for midlevel fa's

when they started doing the former and stopped doing the latter...that is when they won the two ws

i may be an idiot...but you are wine sipping, quiche eating, wanabee giants fan

    7. Really 1209?...Larry Kreuger AGAIN,manned up the other day on KNBR and said "I caused my own demise". He doesn't back what he said about brain dead cultures anymore.
      So why do you?

  6. KLAA covers Orange County, it's not an LA signal. It is run in cooperation with ESPN LA, the signal is so bad at night the ESPN owned station in LA runs the Angels games, KLAA only broadcasts day games. Beyond a few shows ESPN programs the station not Agnew.

  8. C'mon guys, get some knowledge. Bob Agnew and Larry Krueger were fired because Susquehanna was in the middle of selling KNBR. They could not give a rat's ass about what was said on air. What they cared about was the their little controversy caused problems for their asset sale.

Rich should know this, since he's such a radio "Insider".
