The mysteriously silent Bob Costas

A few days ago I mentioned on my radio show that maybe Bob Costas was right.

Hold on a second.

It's not what you think. I'm not calling out Costas for that, but this guy is.

Costas is big time media whether you like him or not. He's not God by any means but he brought forward an important issue and dare suggested the culture, the culture, the gun culture we live in here in America was perhaps responsible for a certain tragedy.

Costas was vilified. And that was before Newtown. Now he's suddenly silent. I'm bewildered, but again, not surprised.

Now I don't know what's more disturbing: the fact he was butchered or the fact that he's mysteriously silent just days after the terrible Connecticut elementary school massacre.

How do you feel?

  1. He spoke out on the gun issue as it tied in with the NFL. He was hammered by the right wing lunatics. Him speaking on this recent tragedy would have been in poor taste. He would've taken the spotlight from the tragedy and made himself the story. Although the idiots at the NRA have gone into silent mode even taking down ther Facebook page. Something is going to change big time...

  2. Meanwhile, as politicians and pundits capitalize on ill-informed outrage over the massacre, quietly congress and the president get ready to cut assistance to millions of Americans on social security fixed incomes. The lives of these folks, lacking the"innocence" factor, eminently unimportant.
It's not a story where anchors can compete with each other as to who looks more "concerned".

    1. "ill-informed outrage"

But of course all of us are oh-so grateful to have Christine around, using this opportunity to remind us how well informed she is about guns, asperger's syndrome, and the media. I can't help but notice that the most vocal critics of media exploitation of Newtown are themselves doing the exact same thing, using a horrendous tragedy to draw attention to themselves. Christine can't seem to stop telling us how she understands better than anyone else about this horrific event and insist we view it all through her prism.

    2. Indeed, only Christine is able to pay attention to TWO big news items unlike us morons who can only pay attention to ONE! Only she can understand Asperger's, guns, dogs and the sellout by Obama while at the same time juggle her law job and post here during her lunch break. The Almighty, All-Knowing, Omnipotent Christine "I know an asperger client so I am suddenly an expert" Craft.

    3. I have never said that I understand"better than anyone else" That's your hang-up,not mine. I have had extensive experience with Aspergers and autism spectrum young adults, seeking assistance for their disabilties and helping their parents with wills and trusts. You are not required to pay any attention to a lawyer's view on all this. I have been held at gunpoint, have covered numerous gun incidents as a reporter over several decades, have had death threats, have legal, registered firearms, and do go to the gun range. That's just my experience. I would prefer that reporters and commentators actually learn the differences between types of firearms, because it makes their reporting more accurate. It's really not that difficult, at all.. I've got nine hours of talk radio to do shortly and would rather know those differences than not know them. A semi-automatic weapon is not a "machine" gun or a "military-style" weapon. This should help inform a sense of what gun control legislation might or might not ultimately look like. I suggest you continue using your own prism(s).If you don't like reading what I post, then exercise prism control, and just don't read it. Is that too difficult for you? My post above, to which you felt impelled to respond was about social security cuts. If I posted anonymously in the future, would that soothe your angst? I supported the media interviews with willing kids, as you failed to note. My only issue with the "coverage" , is the lack of fundamental knowledge about both guns and autism.

    4. Christine, you do say that you understand "better than anyone else" with your condescending tone and "know-it-all" attitude. As soon as this happened you were right out of the gate insisting that passing new laws would be futile and launching into your asperger's spiel.

  3. He is in fear of the gun lobby. Sure,he can claim the massacre wasn't part of a sports event and that's why he's silent. The truth is- anybody who has a bit if backbone would speak out, again. But,I saw Costas on O'Reilly on FOX,and Bob said NOTHING,when O'Reilly said and I quote, "More guns would have prevented the Colorado massacre"..and then like a nut,Bill O Reilly created a fantasy that if he and Bob had guns in that Colorado theater," We could have answered with a few shots",or something to that effect. Not an exact quote.
Bob I'm sure saw his career flash before him on the gun debate.
Lets tell the truth..if gun lovers weren't mostly white men, guns would have been outlawed long ago. No amount of color on color gun deaths moves America. But when it hits home in Colorado or Connecticut,Americans are shocked, eyes open.

    1. The truth? Black, brown, AND WHITE criminals love their guns (tools of the trade)every bit as much the legal white segment you place blame on, just for very different/obvious reasons. The segment you blame is the one that does the heavy lifting for responsible ownership/gun rights while the others sit back, taking a free ride as usual, and benefit the most. Let's not bullshit one another.

Could the argument by made that since the victims last week were defenseless white kids, the news feels that they can get more mileage? You're trying in a sick and demented way by playing to the liberal white guilt that some catch, an affliction I've been vaccinated for.

Regarding Bob Costas, I'm sure his producers/higher ups had a very frank conversation with him. If he didn't have the decency to know that he should keep his hands off this one, letting only the president turn a tragedy into his opportunity, it was dictated to the sanctimonious little gas bag.

    2. @9:43 is right on. Only when bullets fly in white suburbia the establishment takes notice. I am soon expecting America to respond in the only way America knows. By declaring a war. It will be war against mental illness and specifically an eternal war against aspergers with Christine Craft as the self-appointed expert on everything related to guns and psychology.

    3. no,numbnuts...I have direct experience as a lawyer helping families with autism spectrum children. I know of their staggering despair, and the lack of assistance they are able to get. You don't want to know about that, so don't read or listen about it. I made no claim to know"everything about related to guns and psychology".I only know my own experience going from being profoundly offended by guns,to being directly affected by them, to changing my view of them. Just one person's particular experience. I do know there is a lot of psychobabble about autism from psychologists who are not physicians..but I don't think you should hear about that either.

    4. Christine,

Does this mean that if you had experience as a lawyer helping families facing the despair of psoriasis you'd be dwelling on that extraneous topic as well and dragging that into your evolution as a gun rights apologist?

    5. Well, when someone wants to shoot your sorry ass, is you going to refuse to defend yourself with a firearm? That's certainly your choice.

As to your assertion that Adam Lanza's apparent imminent institutionalization is extraneous to putting together the puzzle here, I think you're the one who should be apologizing.
see drudge..breaking...Lanza killed mama because she was seeking conservatorship with goal of putting him in the nutty bin.

      Christine,

Your gun-rights apologist, bunker mentality is taking you to new levels of foolishness.

You, like Adam Lanza's dead mother, argue that keeping guns is the way to keep yourself safe. We know how that worked out for her. She's dead, her son is dead, and 26 other innocent people are dead.

Not surprising the you monitor the Drudge Report closely. But if you think the revelation that crazy killer Adam Lanza was angry at his mother is more relevant than the fact that an unstable, madman could easily acquire killing machines and used them for their intended purpose, you oblivious to the obvious. THIS IS ABOUT GUNS.

Now run off and find some other excuse that doesn't involve the extraordinary proliferation and easy access to monstrous killing machines in the US by any lunatic who wants them.

Probably it's all just a big asperger's syndrome epidemic as you've persistently asserted.

  7. Rich isn't "calling out Costas" BUT THEN he is.

Please Rich, please stop telling the world how this event must be covered and criticizing everyone else because they aren't getting it exactly right, according to Lieberman. A says too much, B doesn't say enough. It appears you disapprove of everyone but yourself.

    2. I must agree with fair and balanced. If Bob Costas had come out with another statement against guns then Rich would've accused Costas of exploiting the situation for self-aggrandizement. It is very odd, Rich accuses KGOne of exploiting the tragedy in ads then he thinks Costas is too quiet on the subject.

This isn't a liberal/conservative question but if anyone is a liberal whiner, that would be Rich.

  10. I don't go to church to listen to political discourse. I don't tune in football games to liste to gun control. Costas can say what ever he wants. Just do it somewhere else. He used his bullypulpit in the wrong forum.

Regularly Lieberman you're spot on. You're dead wrong this time.

  12. In the Newton incident all the evidence thus far points to a mentally disturbed individual with access to weapons capable of killing numbers of people very quickly. The mother's interest in guns and an unstable child became a recipe for disaster. The AR 15 assault rifle used by Lanza and other mass murderers is capable of firing multiple rounds quickly and since their high velocity rounds can pierce most body armor along with the multiple load magazine clips, these kinds of weapons allow for devastating mass shootings..

I think we should ban these types of weapons and their lethal ammo; do a better mental health job and still keep in place the right to bear arms for our citizenry..

  13. Costas is self serving. This is the same person who refused to even acknowledge that USA Swimming has a problem with pedophile coaches even though more than 60 of them have been banned for life including former Olympic coaches. Because NBC carries the Olympic Games Costas looks the other way.

Criticizing Costas for what HE DIDN'T SAY about pedophile coaches. We've only begun to scratch the surface of things Bob Costas didn't say. Of course we could start criticizing Rich L. for things he hasn't said but it's just too idiotic.

  14. Breaking on Drudge.. Adam Lanzo had just learned his mother had filed for a conservatorship, in order to institutionalize him. How does one acquire a conservatorship? first they see a lawyer.

  15. A lawyer who does conservatorships, facilitating communications between the courts and the agencies, physicians, and parties involved. A conservatorship is an actual legal document, with time periods, and other specifics designated by a judge.

  16. The gun nuts love to go after anyone who actually has the temerity to suggest that guns kill people. I always am astounded by their pretzel logic of: "guns don't kill people, people kill people!"

That's right. Adam Lanza could have killed 27 people with his hands or with a knife before he was stopped...right!

What is it about guns that Americans are so fascinated with? And why do people vehemently quote the second amendment which talks about a 'free militia,' not individual citizens. I love the way the NRA likes to stretch that one to suit their needs.

Just for everyone's info, the 'free militia' that was mentioned in the second amendment had to do with a hastily assembled volunteer army which could be raised to fight the British or angry native Americans at a moment's notice. Guess what? We don't live in that 18th century world anymore people! HELLO!

I wish these gun nuts would all take their weapons and go some island where they could play 'Survivor' together, and leave the rest of us alone! What kind of sick people feel a need to carry around assault weapons?

I know a guy in Houston who keeps an arsenal in his home, and a shotgun in every room at the ready to repel anyone who would invade his home. What a sad, paranoid individual, but indicative of the some of the people in this country who cling to their guns with such ferocity!

  17. My guess is that Costas' comments on gun control were based on the football player's murder/suicide and it's the connection to sport. Newton is more in the realm of news, so he is giving it a pass
