October Radio Ratings; KNBR Baseball Bump firmly #1; KCBS, KSFO Slight Up Trends; KGO modest Up Arrow

KNBR, taking clear advantage of the SF Giants euphoria, (and subsequent title), had a big October month and is the top-rated radio station for the second consecutive month in the just-released Arbitrons, (12-plus, PPM)

Knibber posted a 6.1 in the overalls for October, up from its top spot in September. Again, you can attribute much of that to baseball.

KCBS had a slight bump, (5.2), up from a Sept. 5.0. KGO had a modest bump to 2.7, (largely due to its temporary broadcasts of 49ers football).

Here's the entire list.

NOTES: Newstalk 910 seems to have flatlined with a disappointing 0.5 overall. The ClearChannel talkie has remained largely ratings-challenged mostly due to a poor signal...Entercom's FM "The Game", (957TheGame) had a modest bump but still was leaps and bounds behind rival KNBR...KSFO, the conservative talkie, thanks to election season, also had a good month and bumped to the up arrow.

*These ratings, we always remind you, are merely industry numbers --the "beauty contest" results. Advertisers are courted by specific demos and breakdowns. Nevertheless, for KNBR, which at one point a few years back was in the lower top 20, two solid, straight books deserves props.

Yes, you read right: I'm praising KNBR. Stop the presses.

  1. Praise? for combining the Giants,49ers and 50,000 watts?..How do you not succeed?.
Although hearing that "Laurence Baer" and the Giants own one third of Comcast and a chunk of KNBR...so why the lack of diversity on the radio? Its four white middle and older guys announcing and all white guys-exception Brooks, just barely- on KNBR.
I don't see Laurence Baer working as hard to integrate on the business side as he does on the field.

    2. HUH? Somehow the all-powerful Larry Baer controls KNBR's programming too? Ridiculous!

    3. And as 321 shows, the local sports media is the most racist media of all.
You want a white mans view of sports?-you better, because its all your going to get.

    4. "the local sports media is the most racist media of all"

Of all what? That's an idiotic claim, what does that even mean? 321 doesn't show anything, it's just a vague comment without any factual support responding to an even stupider comment about Larry Baer.

I am tired of these repeated claims of racism directed at KNBR, Comcast ???, Larry Baer ???, the Giants???, I'm not really sure who.

The one thing I'm certain of is that KNBR would put anyone on the air who would pull the best ratings. It's not altruism, it's greed.

    5. This is what gets me..white sports people cant even COMEPREHEND there might be an alternative viewpoint of sports. It unimaginable to them that a valid point that isn't from view of the cultural majority is possible. WHAT could people of color have to say about sports that they dont see?
Plenty. The apathy of Jeremy Lin was a huge one by bay area media. When here or gone on to star. The loss of Latin stars is big to Latino people..Geo Gonzalez given away..Beane got no rebuke. I could on. But if you don't get it now..

Stan, do you want KNBR to hire more blind hosts too?

Your not serious! GMs should use different standards when trading Latin stars? Better check yourself pal, that smacks of racism.

  3. Even though I read Gross' explanation for not taking calls on 910am, I have to believe many folks are not tuning in because they don't want to hear a three hour monologue. Add Rhoda on Fridays and Len Tillem's frequent days off, no wonder the ratings are stagnant...

    1. The way Gross pauses and breaths is really annoying.

    2. @657 Gil does not take calls because of ratings. He and management think they get better ratings jumping from subject to subject rather than staying with one topic and taking calls....his explanation was posted here a few days ago...

    3. He also responded to an email I sent him that during the 4-7 time slot, people are out and about -- commuting, picking up kids at school, cooking dinner, etc. -- and are not able to stay tuned in to a whole hour on one topic and get frustrated at missing out on the content of the hour. I don't buy it, though. The same could be said for almost any hour during the day. People at work often can't stay glued to a whole hour uninterrupted and people running errands during the day also can't listen every minute. But you can often get the gist of the hour even if you don't hear all of it. And when John Rothmann did fill in for Gene during that time, he took and got plenty of calls.

Using Gil's reasoning, jumping topic to topic means that some people miss a whole topic rather than just part of one for the hour. If it's a riveting topic and you miss some of it, you can also listen to what you missed on the archives.

He does more of a newsmagazine now. It can be interesting but not as captivating as a whole hour on something more in depth and thought-provoking with caller input. I used to never miss a show on KGO; now I maybe listen, maybe not. Don't feel I'm missing something truly enlightening.

  4. One problem many stations have is finding interesting, qualified and capable women to broadcast sports on the radio. The sad fact is that most women who want to get into sports journalism seem to gravitate either toward writing or TV. There just are not that many
women that I've heard over the years that work in sports radio, and perhaps it's because radio is much more dysfunctional and unstable compared to TV. That's just my take on it from my many years of experience in working on-air radio and TV sports.

  5. 5:45 perhaps the ratings fall on 910 had something to do with morning or early afternoon radio. However, in my situation, the dwindling daylight in the very early evening is giving me bad reception. Also during the recent debates I watched on TV or while driving I listened at a station with good reception. Agree with other poster that the Giants on other station would also be a draw. I do agree that Rhoda on Fridays is annoying...sorry, I know she is a nice person, but is not good radio. I don't mind Gil at all, but have to admit, I only get to hear 1 hour or 2 at the most due to work. Len is back. I adore Alan Colmes, but 7:00 p.m. is bad for me and listening on the computer while at home...well, I try, but I have other things to do. Still I do so appreciate 910.

  6. How is that when Clear Channel bought their AMs in SF - they bought bad signal stations? In the markets where CC does talk and they have strong signals (KFI, KFBK, WOAI, WLW) the stations do very well. In the markets where CC has purchased bad facilities: (SF, Fresno, Monterey), the stations have trouble getting above a 1 share. It doesn't matter what formats CC runs on 910 and 960 - the signals are so limited, they will never succeed. As far as Gil not taking calls - well that runs against what the format is supposed to be: "Talk Radio" - What he's doing is "monologue radio - Boring.
