KPIX gets 'Slap-Happy'; Armstrong and Getty; Ronn Rumors; Friday Bullet Points

More signs of the coming apocalypse...

KPIX, (CBS5) sent an intern out on a story about face-slapping. I'm not going to go into the meat of the story because it's so patently ridiculous and dumb and embarrassing that it should land the moron who pitched it into the boss' office.

Bruno Cohen: the new VP/GM, is this not further proof that you got issues and it all begins with him.

*Melanie Morgan, I like you, (personally), and because I like you, your co-host has become a one-trick pony joke, predictable too, and patently un-entertaining. Beyond that, the traffic woman is worse than fingernails on chalk board. Maybe she can run errands for the mad scientist at Jack-in-the-Box.

*95.7 The Game has apparently pissed off its shrinking listener base by sponsoring a Giants World Series "viewing party" in Downtown Oakland. The station is the flagship outlet for the A's. Good marketing, Entercom. Was Lew Wolff invited?

*Latest Ronn rumors: looking anywhere to work after the contract expires Dec. 31. At a fraction of what he's been getting the past seven years. I'd still bet he retires, but maybe he'll "work" because it's rough out there and I didn't make that up.

*Torture: The "Armstrong and Getty Show": Midwest hacks that sound like some cartoon program out of St. Louis.

*Torture 2: Donald Trump and Brian Sussman: Birds of a feather...

*Tim McCarver: Barry Manilow? Huh?

*Add PIX: They sent an intern out to do a story. An intern. That, in and off itself, speaks volumes. Paging Black Rock.

*Bill Bungeroth, ex-market Mgr. of SF Cumulus, ultimately got canned because of the Titanic known locally as "KGO, 810."

*Owens back-of-mind plan: take gig somewhere, maybe on the Internet, for a lot less coin and try to spin it as, "see, I'm working!" Which would be great for the mattress folks.

*Brian Flores has a new gig at KTVU and that's great if only I knew who the hell Brian Flores is, but somehow I just don't really care.

  1. I go to sleep listening to Coast to Coast AM on 910am and I am awakened by the horrible Armstrong and Getty show. What a piece of trash! Two big mouths just yelling incessantly about any and every subject.

    2. That's why I don't listen to it in the morning!

  2. Why pick on KPIX for a story that ABC7, and other local media also reported? It was also picked up by the Chron, SF Weekly, NBC radio, NY Daily News to name but a few.
As for sending an intern on a very minor story, what's the problem? That's a better use of interns than simply getting coffee or other all too typical scut work that does nothing to develop the next generation of news talent. Interns are there to learn the job through hands on experience.
KUDOS to KPIX for giving their interns an opportunity to learn their craft under professional guidance!

  3. You haven't memtioned that since Bunghole was canned..the Garry and Larry show has been renamed the GARY RADNICH SHOW..and Larry. Since Raddy used to point out the "Where Bill goes, there's Larry with him"..I guess it wasn't Radnich who wanted the Gary and Larry title. Just remember this when Raddy does his fake sincerity of "Larry saved my career".
But,it is Raddy's style to play both sides isn't it?.

  4. KPIX sent out an intern to get their face slapped so Ann wouldnt have to go through the torture. LOL!

  5. Armstrong and Getty are no worse than Ron Owens or Gary Radnich. They are not rocket scientists or politically astute like a John Rothman but they don't claim to be. And Mr. 415 Lieberman knows this - he just needs to a little filler now and then when he doesn't really have any "breaking news" and that's ok too. A little yukky yuk never hurt anyone.
I mean you listen to Coast to Coast? I love Coast to Coast for its entertainment not because I BELIEVE that my neighbor is a space alien...jeez!
Just change stations and get on with your day. It's easy.

  6. I actually like Armstrong and Getty, they do not lean right or left. I also like Coast to Coast.

My favorite is John Rothman when I find him filling in places.
    Then 2nd is Alan Colmes

ACTUALLY 910 AM lineup would be perfect if they replace Rush,Sullivan, and Gross with John Rothman and some other talents.

    1. I am really impressed with Alan Colmes for his humor, intellect, and ability to create a lively, entertaining show. I just wish he was on at a different time partly because 910 fades out for me when it gets dark, plus 7:00 p.m. isn't a great time. I can get him on the computer on heart, but don't know how to listen while I browse different sites.
I think Gross has a show that is enjoyable, except when Rhoda is there (sorry her high pitched voice and laugh irritate me) although I do like Rothman, but he tends to be way too serious and sounds like the sky is falling. I respect his information, but is tone is a downer for long periods.
Definitely would like to be done with Sullivan although he beats Rush by a mile. I can actually listen to Sullivan at times...for short periods, but sometimes I am desperate.
I wil miss Ronn if he goes.

    2. I miss John Rothman and Gene Burns more and more each day. They were/are the best. I like Gil, but I don't think he is as good as John Rothman, and lately he is not taking calls. Why? Isen't that what a talk show host is suppose to do. I listen to Sullivan, I hardly ever agree with him, but I like to find out what the other side is up to, I can't stand Rush, Hannity, Levin or Savage, too must yelling, predictability, Sullivan is at least civil to the other side. Still like Ronn when he talks politics. I think Armstrong and Getty use to be better, it doesen't matter who else is on at that hour? Glenn Beck (although his paranoid theories can be amusing)Sussman and Morgan, so I take what I consider the lesser evil of the 3 shows available, at least at times they do make me laugh. Glenn Beck is all doom and gloom, and Sussman and Melanie, is well not much better.

  9. The face-slapping thing was on the front-page of SF Gate. That's probably where KPIX got their story.

  10. AM radio is a wasteland right now. I do enjoy segments of A&G and I frequently find their interviews with Politico, Fox and Salon reporters to be informative. I find A&G similar to John & Ken on KFI, who I enjoy as well. There is nothing else to listen to 6-10am.

As for post-10pm radio, its embarrassing. We are the 4th largest media market in the US and we only have UFO talk to listen to? Why/how have we allowed this to happen? Seriously, we're talking about UFO's every night for how many hours? At least KGO takes pity on us for the weekends. Karel. Comedienne lady from NY. So instead of waterboarding us they only pull our finger nails out.

My solution: as soon as I can figure out how to get 12:00 to stop flashing on my vcr I'm going to figure out how to download some podcasts and listen to them at night.

    1. Actually, you are on the money with your John & Ken comment...the exec who gave A & G their current Sacto gig was also involved with John/Ken show. For a time, ClearChannel ran portions of A & G on KFI...No more and for good reason: the anti-immigrant rant fest was wearing thin, earning them the "KKK"FI tag. And quit hatin' on Coast 2 Coast...the Art Bell days were actually riveting radio! Loved every minute as a board op in the 90s. Nowadays, its just guilty pleasure/conspiracy fun for me when I'm in nite-owl term paper mode (what, I'm the only under-achiever 30-something finishing a degree!?)

    2. Love John and Ken. Listen everyday on the internet or my iPhone. They were on up here briefly and then not. We have nobody really interesting on AM anymore. Quit listening to local AM ages ago except for sports or Len Tillem.

  14. wait, NOW you're ridiculing the McCarver "Barry Manilow" thing? 4 days later?

  15. I checked out the Armstrong & Getty Show, at the insistence of a close friend, who thinks that A&G are the final word in politically conservative humor.

While there are some funny comments from time to time, the histrionics of whichever partner it is who has the higher-pitched voice drive me nuts. The more agitated he gets, the higher the pitch and volume of his voice go. At a certain point, that loud, agitated, high-pitched, screechy voice falls into the "fingernails on a blackboard" category that was cited on a separate issue.

Sorry, but that voice is too reminiscent of an ex-girlfriend of mine, who developed severe personality problems for roughly one week of each month. After less than an hour of listening, I had to change stations, for my own sanity. The annoyance of the voice far overpowered any humor that was to be heard.

    1. THANK YOU! My point exactly. Both idiots scream about anything and everything. Thank goodness I have not heard them long enough to figure out which is Gordon and which is Getty, or is it Louie and Armstrong? The bogus outrage is nauseating.

    2. Then why do you listen. You a paid jack?

  16. I've grown to really like A&G. Don't agree with most of their politics but at least they aren't as combative and partisan as most conservative radio guys. And the interplay between them and their producers is pretty hysterical.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I used to defend Armstrong & Getty, but since their last producer (Scott) left the show has gone downhill. Why all the screaming?

  19. Oh nooos!, someone took my laura ingraham away from 560am. To make room for savage, my little lamb was sacrificed. Damn. Jon batclr is ok and competent, but laura was more current events and breezy fun. Mike is a gifted pro. But tends to paint everything as black and hopeless. Maybe he has changed, learnrd to leven the copius amounts of gloom. ,,,910am, get laura
