Hey, KPIX, You Need Good Political Reporter and I Got One: Ex-KTVU Ace, Mark Curtis Walks the Walk and Talks the Talk

Mark Curtis is one damn good political reporter. And he's itching to come back to the Bay Area too. (Psst, KPIX).

In spite of #1 ratings and a loyal, ardent following, KTVU sent Curtis packing in 2008, (after fifteen years), as "Mornings on Two" chief anchor and political reporter.

These days, Curtis, who authored a best-selling book on the '08 Presidential campaign, is an anchor for the Providence, RI station. He also has a blog which is must-reading if you're a political junkie like me.

So I asked Curtis who's going to win between Obama and Romney. He had an interesting take--one which I think has a real chance of occurring.

This one is still too close to call. We could have a split decision like 2000, but this time I think it would be Mitt Romney barely winning the popular vote, but President Obama winning the Electoral College.

Hello Florida, 2000.

Curtis eats, breathes and loves the political arena. It's a passion he's cultivated since childhood and deply rooted in his blood.

I love politics. This is the ninth presidential campaign I have covered – everyone since Reagan vs. Carter in 1980. I love being out on the campaign trail, and I have been able to make five trips to San Francisco this year as part of my coverage for KGO radio. I keep up on Bay Area politics on the Internet, and have been fascinated by the stories of Ross Mirkarimi, Mary Hayashi, and Nadia Lockyer. I’d love to come back to the Bay Area full-time if the right job presented itself. There is never a dull moment in Bay Area politics!

Bruno Cohen, are you listening?

  1. Funny you bring him up..Every now and then I see Alan whats his name, on ch5..I think-whats the difference between him and that guy Mark Curtis who was canned by ch2?
Plus-Mark,who used to be a long haired rocker when young, had some quality hair transplants done post KTVU.
Maybe that was the diff? TV being so shallow on looks.

  2. Nice to see Mark getting some high fives! He is a very talented guy. We at KGO are very lucky to have him commenting for us on the election. The man who just finished up his PhD deserves a gig back here in the Bay Area. He would be a great talk show host as well as a TV reporter/anchor. The truth is that he was canned from KTVU by Ed C. because he was overweight. His numbers were good, he was well liked by the audience and worked his tail off for the station, but nope, can't have a guy behind the desk that is carrying too much weight.

  3. Mark is a stellar journalist - sad to see comments about hair, weight etc overshadow his abilities. He is a true talent and any station would be lucky to have him.

  4. The guy that took Mark's spot at Ch2 is soooo horrible. Give Mark his old job back and kill two birds with one stone.

  5. There is no good reason why Mark Curtis is no longer broadcasting in the Bay Area. He was good on air and with the community. His replacement was not better than he, and the powers that be put a good man on the street without work for a couple of years. Grrr . . .

  6. I figured "Special Ed" didn't get along with Curtis. Time for another Special Ed rant, Rich, especially with our main lady Rita about to wrap up her Hall-of-Fame reporting career within months!

  7. I say give the guy a shot. The current one (Grace Lee, I believe) seems unable to report without bias.

  8. Are you freaking kidding, he looks like a doofus with that new hair piece. This is not radio, he will look like a joke on tv. Can't take him seriously. Does it always have to be a man and woman anchoring news. What's wrong with a solo anchor. Headline news does well. Give the information needed.

  9. Thank you all for your very kind words! I am touched. I do wish to correct something, though! I do NOT wear a hair piece, although this discussion of one makes me chuckle. Instead, I had hair grafts done by the world renowned Dr. Peter Panagotacos, in San Francisco, as have some other Bay Area TV folks. Essentially what he does is take hair from the back of your head, and "re-plant" it in the front. The hair is all real, and all mine! No rug; no piece! Anyway, I did Dr. P's "Hair Doc" commercials on KNBR as a testimonial, since I was so pleased with the results! Yes, I get kidded about it all the time, but hey, I have a sense of humor, too! Cheers to all!

  11. If they take the hair from the back of your head, is it the same texture as your forelock?and does your neck now get cold more easily?
I don't need it now,but you never know!

    3. Actually I do poultices for friends with thinning hair. I've had great success with them. One of the ingredients is cayenne pepper powder. Women often have thinning manes, you know.
I have a 64 year old male friend coming over next week for a poultice. They get reallllllly hot, but he's never been disatisfied with the results of my poultices. You have to wear a turban for two hours. It's funny to watch as the steam comes out of their ears.
