Halloween Town Hall Meeting at 415 Media

This day is a good day to answer your questions. (I hear there's some parade going on).

So, shoot away. Use your name, (for a change); it doesn't have to be your full name--initials are fine too. And I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

Let the show begin.

  1. Curious about the following media salaries:

    B. Murphy

Sarah from Sarah & Vinnie (read some blog somewhere that she makes a high salary).

  2. Have you listened to Savage in his new time slot? Two days ago a caller told him he used to listen to Savage on KGO when he filled in for Dr. Wattenberg and Savage replied: ”I never filled in for that cretin”. I thought he and Dr. Bill were tight!!??

    1. I don't know the state of Wattenburg's relationship with Savage, but if he, (Savage) said that, I'll assume they don't break bread together.

    2. Yes Savage use to praise Dr. Bill, I don't know if he ever filled in for him. However, Savage use to say when he was at KGO and most people there didn't like him because he was a conservative, it was Dr. Bill according to Savage himself, who told him to stand his ground and stick by his belief. If Savage now is knocking Dr. Bill, just confirms my belief that Savage does not get along with ANYONE, liberal, conservative or in between.

    3. I remember Savage on KGO. He'd occasionally fill in on the weekend afternoon slots, like for Duane Garrett. He was mild and non-controversial then.

    1. I believe Coyle is freelance at PIX. ...As for Bochy/Sabs salaries, I'd believe both make in the $2-3M per range, but will probably get substancial raises. (Just a hunch).

  6. What market is Muttley currently working in? I always loved him and Mac. They were probably the best investigative reporting team to come out of the Bay Area in the late 80's/90's.

    1. Don't know for sure, but I think the man and dog act are syndicated in a few markets.

  7. Heard The Razor this morning on 95.7 in what seemed to be another charity segment by The Game. At least Ralph had his voice, unlike six months ago when they threw him on the air with laryngitis. Whats Ralph's radio future? Is he just going to ride off into the sunset or do you think he'll sign on with The Game? Or is it possible he and KNBR ever makeup and he rejoins Tolbert?

    1. I think Ralph wants to work somewhere. I seriously doubt The Game is a player, but who knows, maybe they're testing the waters.

As for Ralph ever appearing again on KNBR, uh, no chance.

  8. Rich, how are the ratings for Lamont and Toneli show on 107.7 The Bone? How long is left on their contract and is is true aboit the rumors that their show will be syndicated nationally and may move to satalite radio?

  9. Lamont and Tonneli have decent ratings, (I don't listen to their show)...don't know contract status and haven't a clue on syndication/satellite plans, but I'll check. Maybe they can answer.

  13. What do you think is the future of radio and television? Will the U.S. Government make the schmucks who ruined the industry divest their holdings to level the playing field? Will the U.S. Government force media outlets to sell their interests in businesses such as pro sports teams to create some balance in reporting the news? What will it take for the U.S. Government and the FCC to be more of a watchdog? As you know and have written, the industry has gone to hell and the hole is getting deeper.

    1. There's about a month's worth of copy in those questions, but having read my site, you can probably deduce that the state of broadcasting is in severe decline, notably radio. The fact that about four companies control virtually all of terrestrial radio is troubling, to say the least.

  14. What's going to happen to KRON4? The way the newscasts are technically produced (bad camera switching, misspellings in the ticker, poor use of the English language occasionally), you'd think the San Francisco Unified School District is running the station. Hell, not even City College of San Francisco or San Francisco State would allow some of the bonehead things that are seen on that station.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. KRON is trying harder, I'll give them that. That said, they are what they are, but I give them credit for battling under dire circumstances. And they went wall-towall with the Richmond Chevron fire refinery story when everyone else left and went back to regularly-scheduled programming.

    2. Thank you!

Darya being the worst offender. Please cut her hair (to detract from her equine facial features), and make her wear anchor-professional (not oldest profession) attire that does not look like clearance items from Forever 21!

Someone must have come down on her (pun kind of intended), because she ACTUALLY acknowledged Justine Waldman during her Giants parade live reporting!

    3. The Ratings information you posted was very interesting, you should do more of that and expand on it..Its kind of like the fantasy football stats of radio... I'd like to know how Ronn Owens numbers are for his time slot and how much they've changed over the last couple years?

      Delete
    4. Ronn has considerably lower ratings than in previous years when he was working at a legitimate radio station.

  19. Can something be done about the radio ads that repeat their 800 number 3-4-5 times in the same spot. They all appear to be bogus ads. Why do radios stations accept these kind of commercial spots?

  20. What's your take on teaming Phil Matier with Anne Makovic on weekends on KPIX ? I get the vibe that Matier has to dumb down his schtick when on the air with her. Recently I could tell he wanted to grill the heck out of someone talking about Prop. 37 a couple of weeks ago but seemed to hold back. I really like Matier's reporting but to team him with the newslight Makovic seems a little insulting to him. Nothing wrong with Makovic on weekend mornings... weekend news light, "...what's going on today in sunny San Francisco, did you see the Giants yesterday ? Wow..." That's cool for Saturday morning but pair her with another cutesy news light kinda person. Give Matier his OWN half hour on SUNDAY mornings to sling the local political muck. THAT would be good TV. What say you Oaktown Rich ?

    1. We disagree on Makovec. I like her. Keep in mind the time of day she's on--and she's far smarter than you think she is. I actually think the Makovec/Matier team is solid.

  21. I'll use my anonymous site name, if that's okay. We've connected before, and thanks to a friend of mine in the business, I've now become somewhat actively involved, or at least interested, in the goings on of radio stations in the area.

One of the things which struck me early about the comments on the site were the number of people pointing out the deficiencies of KGO/Cumulus. I've asked this question a couple of times, but since most of your posts are anonymous, I never know if you (or someone in the business) have answered.

    With that said:

    1) What do you expect from employees at KGO/Cumulus to do at the station, if it is, as you suggest, a bad place to work? Should they be doing their jobs differently?

    2) What would the KGO Lineup look like right now if you were the Manager?

    3) What would 910 AM look like on air if you were the manager?

    Thanks!

P.S. The hosts on 910 AM aren't very good, in my opinion, but I don't work in this industry.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. The company makes it a bad place to work. And some of their new hires are awful. Then again, there's people there that I like, (mostly news people and a few talk hosts), that are working under the most dire conditions. I know they have to earn a living, that's it's rough out there. Those aren't my targets--they know that.

      2. I would have tweaked the news/talk format and hired more invigorating talent but it's Cumulus' toy and they chose the all-news format and hired a bunch of dreck, for the most part.

      3. 910 AM believes in the safe card. They have a weak signal and have the wrong guy working PM drive--he simply doesn't move the needle. Outside of Tillem, Rothmann, and Alan Colmes, feh.

  22. How about only answering the questions of people who actually use their names/screennames? A little incentive, Richard.

  23. You always complain that the "new" TV people are cheap and unprofessional. Fine. Bring back anyone from the local chop shop and make your dream anchor team. In other words, who's out and who's in?

  26. Hi Rich..If you are still taking questions at 8pm, here goes. I almost feel like I'm 'going to confession' (a catholic custom of absolution). A. Laura Ingraham; Is she still being heard in the Bay Area, Is anyone thinking about hiring her, such as 910am. I miss her in that time slot. Between Mike Savage and Alan Combs, I'm caught between Doom and Gloom. B. Ray Taliafero, I do not miss him, (too Liberally Brainwashed) though I do wish him well, and have always been impressed by his inner spirit and brain power.
    C. Joanie Greggins, the Exercise Lady, What's she up to? She brought a lot of Joy to the table.D. Leo LaPorte...I don't
give a 'hoot' about computers for the most part, but I have listened to his radio show for,,, oh at least seven years. Leo has a good radio voice, and he always seems to be enjoying himself, and, and he is not rude to callers! I like that he talks with teenagers and gives them full respect.

    1. As far as I know, Laura Ingraham is still on, (just tape-delayed)--you like Laura Ingraham? Dullsville from this corner...Ray Tal is enjoying life....Joanie Greggins? Haven't heard a thing although I would imagine she's carrying on with life...Leo LaPorte is still broadcasting away in syndication.

  33. Is there any chance of there being a one year protest march/get-together of ex-KGO fans in early December to mark the "aniversary" of the blood bath of our once-great radio station? I still have my candle from last year. I'm still grieving. Then we can all go somewhere afterwards for drinks or something. I wish more had been done last year... not that it would have changed anything. I still want to connect with fellow fans. Maybe you could arrange it, Rich?
