Giants and World Series; Ronn Owens Update; Susan Slusser heads up BBWAA; Sunday Rundown

There's really no story to tell around these parts other than topic A, namely, the SF Giants. They dominate the entire news, social, and yes, obviously, sports domain, as they should.

I got castigated because I dare suggested some of the local radio and TV people; most especially, a lot of out-of-towners, were jumping on a bandwagon they had very little connection to and presided over false enthusiasm.

Some of you agreed. Many of you thought I was declaring war on God. I might as well be the Detroit Tigers or even worse, Joe Buck.

So, OK, what the hell: GO GIANTS! There's hope.

*There's been some drips of info emanating from 55 Hawthorne that KGO vet talker, Ronn Owens, will be staying on after all when his contract expires at the end of the year. This, despite the fact that, A. Owens would be making less than a third of what his expiring deal pays him, B. Owens, according to my insiders, is in heavy duty pain due to a bad back, and C. sagging numbers by a once-dominant industry giant who very recently told an ex-colleague that he was probably going to retire.

Owens might be looking for some professional "in" to save face. He understands that after Dec. 31 he has no leverage; The local ClearChannel outlet, (Newstalk 910 AM), has no interest in him. And given KGO's dismal ratings, the idea of bringing him back, (under marked lower financial terms--probably some compensation like an "avails deal," perhaps, is a nothing-to-lose possibility.)

ADD OWENS: With regards to Owens' latest health malady, here's wishing him a speedy recovery. One can never delight in a person's health and welfare downturn and that's never been a part of my beef with Ronn. Never. I have, and continue to have my issues with Owens professional tact post old-KGO, (or lack, thereof), but no one wishes anyone pain and misery. Including me, for the record.

*Congratulations to Susan Slusser, A's beat writer, for the Chronicle, for being named as president of the Baseball Writers Association of America, (BBWAA). She's the first woman to head the 700-member club and it's well-deserved.

  3. "There's hope" ??? Yes, I'd say so.

Even though you remain obsessed with Ronn Owens' salary, and appear to be hoping, against all hope, for his demise, you don't wish him severe back pain. What a guy !!

  4. Cost-effective question. What would bring in more revenue from nine to noon?

All news or Mr Owens at a fraction of his salary?

Good for Susan Slusser. Covering the A's hasn't been the most glamorous job in the Bay Area yet she has done so with merit and distinction.

  7. I'm really glad to hear Ronn may be staying on. He got me hooked on talk radio in 1979 and I still really enjoy listening to him on the radio.
