Why I have ignored KFOG

Several of you have written me and asked why I have not written about KFOG lately and that why I have ignored "Analissa" moving over to KFOX to replace Greg Kihn.

I'll be short and sweet: After Dave Morey left I pretty much tuned out KFOG. I wrote about the morning show shenanigans of a few months back, but after that, I've been silent--for a reason.

And no disrespect to Analissa, but when Cumulus took over the KFOG reign, I was done. I was never a foghead, but I enjoyed Morey and liked the playlist. The nudnick they hired and blew out after only a few weeks, (courtesy Mr. Constantine, who clearly doesn't know how to run a radio station), was the final straw.

Then again, I never listened to the new team. Remember, it's Cumulus.

So, again, there's your reason. And I'm OK with that.

  1. Rich, in all my years 50. I've never been a foghead. I've been a bone head. D head. Pot head. You name it. Foghead nope.

  2. No disrespect to Fogheads but what happened at KGONE was more consequential. Kgo is just a mess. I tuned in to KGO via iHeart today during the Cal game and a pre-recorded Mike Amattori loop kept saying: due to broadcast restrictions, the FORTY NINERS GAME can not be broadcast. Kgo can not tell the difference between Cal and the Niners. I gotta say, I really enjoy Kate Scott in the Cal post game show. She sounds under the weather today but she is excellent when not having to deal with Ratsnitch's tired ass Vegas act.

  3. The question is... Why do they keep Renae around? Now she is doing mid-days? She hould have been let go when Webster and Greg left. When did traffic reporters become talent? Annalisa was talent. It seems Renae is still riding the coat tails of Dave Morey even though he is long gone. Another brilliant decision by Cunulus. What's next? 10 at 10 with Renae? I hope not. God help us all. No one needs to hear her ramble on about what concert she went to in 1985.

  4. I was a Foghead. In fact I still get KFOG birthday greetings. Just don't listen to it anymore. Began listening to KFOG after KKSF (then on FM) changed formats. That was when M Dung was on at night, doing his wild, funny DJing. So circa 1984 or thereabouts. Wasn't much of a fan of Dave Morey but grew to like him once I started listening to his morning show. Big Rick Stuart was fun to listen to as well and appreciated the times he talked about being into dirt biking. Because of KFOG, I became a fan of Keb Mo, the Eurythmics, REM, U2, Tom Petty, Wilco, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Springsteen, the Indigo Girls, and many, many others. The '80s to '90s were terrific times for FM Radio in the Bay Area and for me KFOG was the biggest part of it.

    1. I use to be a Foghead too, from about 1989 until a few years ago. Hardly tune in at all. I miss Dave Morey. Don't care for the their morning show. Have all their Live from the Archive CD's, went to a few of their Kaboom concerts, and love most of their play lists like you mention above. I got satelite now and pretty much listen to that outside of my libs on 960.

  5. It's got to be tough for Larry K. as well, as it can't be easy co-hosting with a guy who would rather talk about rap and cross-culture than sports. Radnich is clearly just 'coasting' and stealing money. He doesn't care about sports, and he doesn't really know that much about what's going on anymore. His smart-ass attitude and tired schtick is more annoying than entertaining to listen to and I now turn the station whenever I his smarmy act.

The guy is probably only a year or two away from enforced retirement. KRON is dreadful and I'm sure the hedge fund guys who own them would love to get rid of his contract. KNBR and Cumulus would also probably love to save some cash and give the mid morning show to someone who actually goes to games and follows what's going on with the Niners and Giants. I give Gary credit...he was good for a long time but he is way past his expiration date. If I were him I'd take a buyout and go enjoy some time with my family. After all, how much money does the guy need?

  6. My mom and dad were faithful KFOG listeners way back when the station was a beautiful music station. When KFOG changed formats to adult contemporary or AOR, I don't recall which (back in the 70's I think), they changed loyalties to KABL-FM, which also had a beautiful music format.

  7. No problem on staying silent, Rich. Sometimes a DJ has to know how to play the top brass, and often, it's those who draw mixed reactions from listeners/bloggers who end up staying at the station. Sometimes a DJ knows when it's time to move on before the Cum-ulator strikes (such was the case twice in replacing the 'G' with an 'X').

With the Giants-KNBR closeness that moves the 9ers & W's to 1050 or -One, it's hard to tell how Baer's Boys feel about 9-12er, so I don't know if there is any power struggle between the G-Men Front Office and the 9-Nooner.

Do let me know though if and/or when Owens finally escapes from -One and Jared Fart. The downfall may find a new, pardon-the-pun bottom once Owens leaves, even as his last few years have slipped.

  8. This morning I had KGO left over from the Cal game on the car radio..a comedy of errors as the news reader would do the intro to the news story..followed by silence...then another, and silence, and another and silence..one story after another. I then went to KCBS.

    1. Haha! Same thing happened last night during the news breaks on Pat Thurston's show. I thought my phone was malfunctioning and then I realized it was KGONE incompetence. Btw, it appears Karel and Pat made up as Pat exchanged a couple of words with the carpet walker.

  9. I still listen to KFOG, mainly because there's nothing much else to listen on terrestrial radio. I find it hard to believe Constantine hired Itch or whatever that doofus' name was. Notice how quickly he threw that clown off the bus when everyone HATED the new morning show? I also find hard to believe Constantine's reason for firing Webster. "He was having trouble getting used to being up early in the morning." Uh yeah sure Dennis, whatever you say. Do most PD's make up stuff as they go along?

Renae I'm sure will be back to propping up Constantine as soon as KFOG hires a midday person. Hey what not Greg Kihn? Make it look like KFOG & KFOX traded DJ's!

  10. And speaking of KGO, tonight they are offering their Sunday night Circle of Hell: Karel followed by Maureen Langan. I guess I'll either sweep out the garage or maybe just set my hair on fire.

    1. If you decide to set your hair on fire, let us know. Some of the younger crowd from the saggy-pants generation probably would like to come over and toast a few marshmallows.

    2. Karel is already hard at work peddling his upcoming show at Planet Gemini in Monterey. I wonder if he will bring his very own red carpet to walk on...Langan's voice makes my dog's fur crawl...

  11. There sure are a lot of people on this blog that continue to listen to KGO...just look at all the comments. I guess Cumulus is doing something right. Maybe not with KFOG and Renae... But with all these folks tuning in to KGO with up to the minute updates. That's just perfect for PPM.

    1. Wroooong! Nobody tunes in to KGO during the week. I have not noticed anyone mention their 24/7 news or for that matter Matress Man. People tune in periodically to the weekend horror show to see how bad it is...

    2. Nope. I read the comments but do not listen.
