Morning Radio; What do you listen to? Tuesday Starter

News. Commercial spots. Traffic, weather, sports.

More spots. Traffic. Weather and spots. Then traffic.

News. More spots. Sports. And oh yes, more spots.

See a pattern here?

The traditional radio AM news cluster.

What station do you listen to? AM? FM? Sports? Satellite?

  1. I live in the Santa Cruz area and work in Salinas (45 min drive) so stations available are a bit different. I was a loyal KGO listener but left after the format change. I do have satelite but don't listen in the AM as I like local news.
I listen to KNBR and flip to KRXA Monterey for the news or if the topic at KNBR is not of interest.
On the way home I check out Gil Gross and will stay there or skip to KNBR. KRXA has Karel and he doesn't interest me. Nice thing about the independant KRXA not so many breaks and not a big traffic station which suits me on my commute.

  2. Like a lot of people, I move around the dial a bit. I listen to sports, not the talk shows so much but the games, particularly baseball. KCBS and KGO provide up to the minute news that is helpful (not to mention the (traffic reports), and I particularly enjoy KQED FM, with Michael Krasney's 'Forum,' 'Market Place" and 'All things considered' at the top of the list. I rarely listen to music on radio, unless it's the jazz station, KCSM, as like many folks I prefer to listen to my own CDs (no i-pod) in the car.

  3. The early commute is usually the Rise Guys..but,I usually switch to the oldies station at 103 to catch a blooper call. Why are white woman so uppity? that air of superiority..then if traffic slows KCBS..the grapevine is a living hell. I pity the fool who commutes from the valley to the bay area. I also like KSS? The old school station of Cameo and Prince and that stuff.
Later..I might check in on Raddy..but KNBR really turns me off with the huge and lengthy commercial breaks..I often never come back.
Papa and Lund later..Lund should get on his kneee's and kiss Papa's ring like he's the Pope..Greg is the difference between working and another job far away for Lund..
After that?..I don't listen much. Bucher and Teirney..just the same guys..They are Murph and Mac in the afternoon-almost.
D.BRUCE..But,that's where I have a push button radios..for dials,I don't bother to find him way to the right someplace..He's in between the Indian station and the Latin Texano music station..someplace.

    1. Same here, many days...online when I'm home as I can't get the station in my house...over-the-air if I'm in the car...for some reason I can listen here in Sonoma/Napa fine in the car!!??!?!!?
I also still listen to KGO for The Morning News and Ronn, but after that I'm somewhere else...podcasts, mostly, these days.

  5. Strictly KQED.
Used to listen to KGO but they self-destructed. If I need more traffic news, I turn on KCBS and then switch back to KQED.

  6. I haven't listened regularly to morning drive radio for many years. The usual shtick is to have 2 or more people yucking it up over something, and I do not find the guffaws of DJs at some trivial observation or the other to be conducive to my morning. Sometimes they pick a "topic" that we're all supposed to give a damn about, maybe call in about; between news and weather and traffic and spots and spots and spots plus my own distractions, I do not follow the thread and usually do not give a damn -- at that point it's just plain irritating. Nor do I enjoy blooper calls or similar antics in which someone or other is being made the butt of a joke. So morning drive radio hasn't cut it for me ever, really. If I happen to be out and about at that hour, I usually flip around; actual hard news or some decent music are the things I would look for. I'm only interested in traffic reports on the radio if they address a jam I'm trying to navigate. Oh, and if anyone from KCBS is reading this: I don't care what time of day it is, I hate hate hate when the weather-guesser calls out temperatures in about 12 cities in one go: 54 in belmont, 53 in oakland, 49 in walnut creek, 51 in concord... irritating and useless. I gots presets for that!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agree 100%. If the temperatures in the cities were actually different, it might matter, but a degree or two isn't even detectable and utterly useless for anyone to know.

    2. Or, "Allow extra time" for some traffic snafu. Yeah, I have some here in my pocket.

Or, "we now go live˝ anything- like they pioneered the technology.

Or, "Kxyz exclusive". We don't care.

      Delete
    3. I get your point but don't 100% agree with you. I don't care for the blooper calls and all that silly stuff in the mornings either, HOWEVER, I did find the Greg Kihn Show to be much more interesting that the average morning radio show. Sure he spouted off his opinions and there were even times I didn't agree, but he actually talked about the MUSIC and his stories revolved around the MUSIC...and that is why I listen to the radio...Greg Kihn knew a lot of the musicians and was able to relay info that was truly interesting to me, the listener -- and he and Chris Jackson were dynamic together. If you would've taken the time to listen, you would've known. Unfortunately, Greg Kihn was unfairly booted off 98.5 KFOX...hostile changes. I kind of feel sorry for the chick from KFOG because she's up against a lot of people who are up in arms about the sudden and abrupt change. Do I care about all this? Yes because I listened specifically to hear commentaries on music...I also loved the Last Band Standing competitions...and found it much more stimulating than the other crap out there. now I have nothing cool to listen to on my way to work in the mornings... :(

    4. Well as a long time KFOG listener, you should keep an open mind about Annalisa. No, she wasn't in a band but she's interviewed just about everyone and has a vast and deep knowledge of music and is personally a very cool person. It's a great score for KFOX. (also, she's a much better jock than Greg Kihn who, while sometimes entertaining, never really seemed to have the mechanics down imho)

  7. KQED for news & KCSM for jazz

Informative and entertaining...as long as it's not pledge month.

  8. Stern still rules on satellite. His show is better than ever, even with Robin at home battling cancer. Howard brought down terrestrial radio. Satellite rules.

  9. I use to listen to morning radio all the time. However, since most all stations now have ads that repeat an 800 number 3-4-5 times in one spot I quit listening.

    ReplyDelete
  10. KDFC, in the car and at home
    KCSM in the car
Occasional 95.7; in the morning I typically prefer 1050 (Colin Cowherd); even more occasional KNBR (used to be a big Razor & Mr T guy).
    No TV!

For news & commentary, the Internet. The worst of the internet is worse than radio & TV, but the best is far beyond anything you'll find on radio or TV.

The future of radio is non-commercial. If I want to listen to the same songs over & over again, I'll use my MP3 player. If I want good, curated (carefully chosen) content that I didn't even know existed, then it's non-commercial (e.g. KDFC, KCSM).

I used to listen to country on the radio, but rarely do any more, because it's the same stuff all the time & I rarely hear songs I like.

  11. KLIV for news and traffic.
    KFOG and KPIG for music.

  12. In the morning -- Alice (Sarah and Vinnie) on 97.3 FM and KQED on the drive home.

  13. KQED in the morning - on and off when I can. Fresh Air at 1. Definitely Len Tillem @ 3:00.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm unemployed right now but if I were to listen to the radio in the car during the morning commute, I'd probably listen to KCBS to keep track of traffic reports.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Stern is barely on satellite radio. I wouldn't pay to listen to someone that works 3 days a week on the weeks he bothers to show up

    ReplyDelete
  16. Radio is dead. It's all iPod for my short commute and Spotify for the rest of the time I'm chained to my desk.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What do you listen to?
That is easy. KSFO in the morning.
Sean Hannity at noon, John Batchelor at 6:00 and finaly at 8:00pm Laura Ingram.

Also on occasion Tammy Bruce from Southern Cal.

No KGO. Too much self-righteousness and full of sanctimony.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well you certainly like a diversity of opinions,(NOT) although I do think John Batchelor has the most intersting and intelligent program, Armstrong and Getty are fun, and mostly fair although conservative. KGO self-righeousness and sanctimony? HELLO, Brian Sussman and Sean Hannity are about as self-righteous as you can get. I'm a middle of the road liberal, I like Tom Sullivan a lot, because although very conservative, he is interested in the other side, he is thoughtful, and for the most part fair.

  18. I am retired, therefore no morning commute. I usually listen to KCBS for about an hour in the morning to see if there is anything new going on that I should know about and also catch the segment with Madden. Other than that I don't listen to commercial radio except possibly for a baseball game. I prefer music whether it be from my own collection, satellite radio, or Pandora.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 6-10 AM: Armstrong & Getty (910AM and 4th hour on-line.)
10-Noon: Rick Tittle on Sports Byline Network (streamed)
Noon-3: Greg Papa and the other guy on The Game.
    3-4PM: Len Tillem on 910AM

I am KNBR-free and loving it!

  20. Morning radio? Never touch the stuff.

But on morning TV news, it seems that KRON4 is in at least as much disarray as this site is reporting for CBS5. Not only has Justine Waldman jumped or been pushed, but their website is listing quite a few "immediate" morning job openings: breaking news anchor (Waldman's slot), news anchor (Folsom or Danon?), producer, and executive producer.

    Just a tip from a citizen-journalist, Rich.

      Pathetic.

  21. I used to switch between Howard Stern when he was on locally and KNBR in the mornings. 740 for news midday, KGO throughout the day, and coast to coast am in the evening. Rarely did I ever listen to anything FM. Now that I'm in my mid 30's, I listen to KNBR Radnich/Krueger in the mornings as well as over to Ronn to see if an interesting guest is on. I'm starting to like Huckabee on 560 in the mornings as well. At noon I'm over to Hannity and 680/1050 depending on the mood (after listening to Fitz and Brooks for any given amount of time I tend to turn it off), and Mark Levine and KNBR in the afternoons. Again, I rarely listen to FM radio and their constant cycle of the same songs over and over and over again. There's only so many times I can listen to Stairway to Heaven in any given week. Coast to Coast is still a staple for me in the evenings. I do miss Dr Bill and haven't really caught up with him yet on 910.

  22. Armstrong & Getty and a little 95.7 with Dibley and the boys. Mr. T in the afternoon and a little Mike Savage as well.

  23. Lamont and Tonelli. Who doesn't get a boner listening to them. I love it when I pick up carpoolers and see their reaction when Lamont & Tonelli are doing a "Dirty Friday" or a Ta-Ta Tuesday bit. I like boobies!

    ReplyDelete
  24. For me it's a little bit of KNBR, then usually over to Dan Patrick via DirecTV or on Satellite. Unless something major news wise is breaking then it's KGO/KCBS. Other than that most of the time is spent on Sat Dan Patrick/ESPN/Octane..

    3. Agree with others. Dan Patrick is a quality talkshow host.

  25. Music from Sirius/XM, mixed in with shots of KCBS and for comedy relief, Lamont and Tonelli. You can have the rest of the commercial radio dial. It sucks. KNBR is nauseating and 95.7 The Game is a tad better than the self-serving asskissers on KNBR who want you to believe that the pro sports teams on their dial setting are the best in the world. KGO gets bashed enough here, so enough said.

What's going on at KRON? Did Queen Wonder Bra finally force out Justine Waldman? That may be the break Justine needs to shine elsewhere with her talents. The person who handles the graphics can't spell consistently and has general trouble with the English language. One wonders if KRON is run by the San Francisco Board of Education as an outlet for their students to learn how to operate cameras, direct newscasts (there's more than enough camera and master control problems) and other things.

  26. Wow, what a mix of tastes and places on the dial. It just shows you that despite the changing scenery, radio is still vital and functioning. It may not have the cachet or audience of years past, but it is still the ONLY medium that's free, and the only one that is truly conversational informal. There are still a few folks in radio who get it: Michael Krasny, Rich Walcoff, Damon Bruce,
Greg Papa, Ted Robinson, Jon Bristow, most of the folks at KCBS news, Jon Miller, Dave Flemming, Ken Korach, and some of the jocks on KCSM.

  27. KRTY with Gary Scott Thomas & Julie.

  28. The only AM radio I listen to know is Len Tillem, 3-4pm on KKSF, 910.
He still has a great show and I really love the stories.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mornings: 88.5 KQED for news followed by Michael Krasny's Forum.

Afternoons: Len Tillem on 910 KKSF from 3-4 pm weekdays then alternating between Gil Gross from 4-7 pm (except Fridays when Rhoda is on with him), John Batchelor's on 560 KSFO (6-8 pm) and 88.5 KQED for news.

Evenings: Sometimes Alan Colmes from 7-10 pm on KKSF.

  30. The Game (most of the day), with trips to KQED, 102.1, 103.7, and 107.7.

  31. 6-8am KQED
8-10 I tend to switch back and forth between Live 105 and 95.7 the game and Kiss 98.1
    10-12 Towny and Steinmetz

  32. I don't get up early any more due to retirement. But when I am up early I make it a point to listen to KCBS each hour on the hour for news updates. When I am on vacation I turn on the computer to listen to KCBS News online as I did 2009 during the San Bruno fire.

I bounce between KCBS, KQED and satellite.
Late morning I will tune to KGO to see if Ron has a good guest. If not; back to satellite, KCBS or KQED.

    ReplyDelete
  33. KCBS for traffic (and I like their anchors), otherwise KALW or KQED in the mornings. Music stations are unlistenable anymore. They've killed KFOG and the rest are so narrow cast and repetitive. I still sample KGO, mostly because I like their afternoon team better than KCBS (Brett and Chris and Kevin the Rat) but KCBS still has better traffic and KGO no longer has airplanes. KNBR for Giants games only. The Game I'll check in with occasionally and stay if it's interesting.

    1. Similar, KCBS in the morning, KGO in the afternoon. It seems KCBS is talent heavy in the morning, and KGO more so in the afternoon (though I prefer both of KGO's sports guys to either of the CBS reporters) For music, I'm still listening to 103.7 though I'm not that big of a Don Bleu fan. I like the music for the most part.

  35. I listen to KSFO in the morning. Have been for many years. I liked the interviews that Lee Rodgers did over the years. I also liked how he let his interviewees talk. He wasn't big on taking calls.

Fast forward to now. Different crew. Melanie Morgan back. Tom Benner over at 910. Sussman in the main chair now. Katie Green on the sidelines.

I have to say, I think that Sussman has turned the show into a Zoo format. He occasionally, and out of nowhere, will toss out an uncharacteristic scatological joke, or he-man joke, which throws off any discussion momentum that might be building. He's too quick with callers, and interrupts them just as they're about to get their point so he can impart his own witticism over theirs. This really annoys me.

I find that when Sussman is away and someone else fills in, the tone of the conversation changes. Hayworth, while a bit verbose, keeps the conversation flowing. Many months ago when Sacramento's Mark Williams filled in, I enjoyed the adult conversation with the callers.

It's too bad, because I really wanted to like Sussman.

  37. a.m. bits of KGO for Lyn Jimenez, weather, Dr. Dean minute, but not the rest of their news. Mostly listen to KSCO which is quirky and entertaining, but never listen to Kay's horrid commentary at 8:00. Then at 9:00 a.m. back to Ronn at KGO if his topic interests me. If not, then KCBS on an off . Radio goes off if I don't like what's on. At 10:00 a.m. I really like Andrea MItchell on TV at MSNBC.

p.m. radio 910 for the old KGO crew when time allows. At 7:00 p.m. if possible, Alan Colmes who I recently discovered and he is thoroughly entertaining in a very smart way.

    1. I listen to Alan Colmes's first 15 minutes at 7:05pm on 910 AM on the way home when he is taking Wing nut phone calls. Very Funny. Otherwise I flip back and forth between KCBS, Both KNBR's 680 and 1050 and 95.7 the game or check out the FM music channels.

AM Radio is becoming a wasteland of too much Right Wing and religious radio.

  41. This may be a an unusual post for this column. We now live near Asheville, NC. Gave up on Kalifornia about 12 years ago when we lived in Boulder Creek. We now use Internet/WiFi radio exclusively. We start the day with KQED, switch to WKAR for the "Radio Reader" (been listening for about twenty years) from 8:30 to 9:00 AM, then to KFI for Bill Handel. After that it varies from KALW to WNYC to the original Art Bell Coast-To-Coast broadcasts - yes they ARE available 24 hours/day! Afternoons/early evening (all these times are EDST) we switch to KKSF for Lem Tillem and whoever follows him. Late night is usually KQED, KALW or WNYC. Usta be KGO most of the time. Don't even know what's on KGO now. Don't really care. Radio IS alive and well on the Internet. People need to buy Internet Radios and see what they are missing.

  43. My alarm clock is set on KFOG but I'll be switching to KFOX next week because Analisa has moved over there and I'll be able to escape the latest version of the much-diminished morning show on KFOG. For now, if KFOG is playing music I leave it on, but once the three adolescent men start gabbing I turn it off or switch to KQED (does KFOG really think their female demographic is going to stick with these guys??). I don't commute but if I did I'd switch between KFOG, KFOX, KQED and the new oldies station (103.9?).

  44. I listen on iHeart radio to three shows on KFI - Bill Carroll, John & Ken and Tim Conway, Jr. - very entertaining programs and informative - I never listen to bay area radio (other than pbp sports) - most bay area radio is way too boring.

  45. Morning commute... KCBS for news and traffic on the 8's... Syndicated ESPN Raido's Colin Cowherd for the topics he discusses, then at 9, KQED for Krazny or Jim Rome on 1050. Evening commute, again KCBS (FM when im close in)then 95.7 for A's talk, and KQED also.
KNBR has become a wasteland of nonsense. Murph and Mac -two of the biggest fools on radio. Talk about Kiss-asses... Radnich and Kruger - unlistenable. I did enjoy the Bruno Segment, now long gone.

    KFOG....HA!

  47. Radio as we know it has undergone some serious changes here in the Bay Area...none of which were any good.
I am now unemployed, so no more commute, therefore I listen to Pandora = for new music, country music, my ipod when Pandora locks up..
I used to listen to KCBS in the mornings to know how to navigate the traffic, but after an hour it constantly repeats...thank God I was never in the car that long...
for my drive home I used to listen to KOIT and Lori Sanders, but she's gone and so am I...now the music is just like very other station..I used to like the way it helped destress, some oldies, some new - it was soothing and Lori's voice was like an old friend that complimented the music selection. Now it's just noise...blah blah blah, Also I miss the old KKSF, smooth jazz...but that's been gone for awhile too.
