Roberta Gonzales--Update and Clarification

A source close to Roberta Gonzales has told me she has not officially been let go by KPIX. In fact, I'm told she'll do her weather segments on the early evening news blocks. In addition, the tipster adds that "she'll likely be at the station for many years."

We'll see.

I reported, (based on a story in Newsblues (paywall), Thursday--which is generally reliable and well-regarded in the industry), that Gonzales was to be replaced and that KPIX has hired a Seattle weather reporter.

From Newsblues:

"CBS-owned KPIX-5 in San Francisco (Market #6) will soon announce Deanno as its new chief meteorologist at 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 (on KBCW-44-CW), and 11:00 p.m."

Notice the words: "will soon announce."

Another source close to the issue tells me that there may be contractual and/or confidentiality and legal issues to sift through before anything official is announced.

Attempts have been made to contact Gonzales for a comment.

UPDATE: Gonzales broadcast her 5 PM report.

We'll continue to monitor and update if/when the situation merits.

  1. I was confused as I saw her at the top of the 5:00 newscast.

  2. SOP at KPIX would be not tell anyone anything until security shows up at your desk to throw you out. Unless you are one of the 6 People Dan hired from KRON you have no value at KPIX. Apparently working for him at KRON for 1 year has more weight with him than people he has worked with at KPIX for a decade. If you are one of the 6 you can do no wrong. Everyone else is expendable...

    1. Uh no, Newsblues got it wrong hater...

    2. If he's just cribbing what Newsblues wrote, then what he did isn't "reporting."

      That's not hating, that's just distinguishing between journalism and cutting/pasting other people's shoddy work and suggesting some value had been added.

  4. Dear thin skin Rich, How about admitting you published something as fact when it was no more than a false rumor.
    Reporting it as news and then blaming someone else when it's false is lame.

  5. Don't let the haters get you down Rich. It's not like you forecasted a life ending asteroid strike or something of great importance, then retracted after CC's were maxed out. ; )

  6. Rich, you attributed the usually reliable Newsblues correctly, then shot it down based on your own solid reporting. That is good work.

    1. "That is good work" - apparently you know as much about journalism as Rich.

      The problem is that his headline said, "KPIX Shocker: Roberta Gonzales OUT at CBS5" - (no qualifiers) and that was just plain wrong.

    2. The problem is people who only read headlines. In the article he clearly reported that the information came from Newsblues

  7. Settle down people - this is a blog not a wire service. If y'all have not learned to take everything here with a grain of salt then you are not paying attention. This is a real time rumor mill - take it or leave it.

  8. Haters taking shots at Rich L. remember just a couple of weeks back many wire services and big networks screwed up the supreme court decision on health care reform. CNN for several minutes said all of it had been struck down. We know they were wrong. Rich reported something from Newsblues and followed up. He corrected the initial report and is getting the story....relax haters, relaaaax

  9. When all is said and done I am not a big fan...quite some time ago I got tired of hearing people on the set wait with bated breath to hear which triathalon she was running that weekend.

    Someone here invoked the name of Kristine Hanson--here's another vote for her. And I'd love to see Christine Craft returning to her original gig. Or Linda Mour...or Leon Hunsaker...

  10. More likely that Rosenheim would leave before Gonzales. The latter has more backup than the former. Wouldn't surprise me if we see a role reversal here.

  11. Now Rich dances over behind the "Dude, I'm just a blogger!" defense...the hot news from yesterday becomes the sobered realty today

    Maybe

    Reporter = Meteorologist

    and

    Blogger = Weather Anchor

  12. Roberta's latest tweet? "News of my demise are greatly exaggerated".

    This is just a freakin' BLOG....not the freakin' Associated Press! Y'all need to "let it go" when you leave the newsroom...leave your "I-Team" persona at work...and take this for what it is: A BLOG...which contains biased opinions, rumors, and plain ol' entertainment. The beauty of a BLOG is that the blogger answers to NO ONE. He's NOT a jouralist, fercrissakes.

    So leave your frikkin' news hats at the station...and just enjoy this for what it is: A BLOG.
