KPIX Shocker: Roberta Gonzales OUT at CBS5; Popular Weather Woman Let go; Replaced by Seattle Weather guy, Paul Deanno; Power Play by ND Rosenheim; Gonzales hires Lawyer

Roberta Gonzales is out at KPIX; she's about to be replaced, (after 16 years at 855 Battery) by a Seattle weather guy, Paul Deanno.

Furthermore, Gonzales isn't taking this lightly. Newsblues, (paywall), which broke the story, has said she's hired a lawyer.

I have said in the past that it's well known that KPIX news director, Dan Rosenheim, has never liked the popular Gonzales. Rosenheim played a major role in this move, according to many of my insiders.

Gonzales has anchored the 5, 6 and 11 PM weather and also provides weather updates for KCBS.

This move seems to be, early on, a direct power play by Rosenheim, who likes to pick and choose his players. He's good buddies with sports anchor, Dennis O'Donnell, and has pushed hard for fellow weather bud, Brian Hackney. In fact, it was widely rumored that Rosenheim wanted Hackney to do weeknight weather and push Gonzales over to the weekend.

This much is clear. Gonzales, in addition to being a popular personality with Bay Area viewers, is also an active charity participant. Frankly, this move by PIX befuddles me and is sure to draw the ire of many of its core viewers, most notably, women. And yes, of course, men too.

Developing...

UPDATE, 8: 43 AM: Already, the e-mails are coming in--this one, from a Bay Area TV insider:

Roberta has BALLS...and cred...NOT someone to mess with! She and Randy, (her husband, Randy Hahn, Sharks TV guy), make LOTS....so they have some $$$$ to spend on lawyers. They are both GREAT people who do a lot of charity work and other good causes....some public opion is going to be on her side.

  1. Hackney seems to have learned how to use office politics over his time. I know he had that problem with Susan Blake who he dated when at KRON. He just about went off on camera on her about the breakup..he gave her the evil eye every time. He was let go..she stayed for a while. She always was one of my favorites.

    1. Wow, Brian was doing Susan Blake during the KRON years? And here I thought I was keeping him busy during that era. Ancient history now, but good to know all that stuff about him on cheaterville.com is probably true. BTW, he's the one who told me Samantha Mohr landed in Atlanta on the Weather Channel because she was caught plagiarizing someone else's weather tidbits/facts for a column she was contracted to write for an SF newspaper. Samantha's downfall was what brought Roberta from weekends to weeknights, wasn't it?

    2. Back in the nineties, I had my socks knocked off by Susan Blake when she did a story about deals available in the Bay Area if you are in the mood for a luxurious night out. The mind-burning moment was in the back of a limousine, where she was filmed lounging in a bench seat, cross-legged in a slinky dress that was halfway up her thigh, wearing high-heeled sandals. OH MY GAWD! Unfortunately, this was in the pre-DVR years, and I didn't have my VCR set up in time to catch it, but you never forget the first time you think of someone that way. Susan Blake was a news fox long before Fox News (cue Jimi Hendrix).

    3. Pleeease hire Roberta back...Since Roberta was replaced, I don't watch S.F. CBS 5 as much as I used to...Roberta has such a unique and creative persona, her wardrobe, jewelry, kindness and sincerity make her the beautiful woman she is both inside and out! ..Roberta is of my same age group which prompts women like myself, same age group also with two college age children somebody I look up to, admire and identify with...You lost an amazing weather professional...

  2. This is very surprising. I cannot believe that they would let Roberta go, she is obviously popular with the viewers and and longtime fixture @ PIX. Does she really have any legal recourse though?

  3. This news floored me. When exactly was she let go? Must have been at least a couple of days ago since she already hired a lawyer. Biggest pink slip news since the KGO bloodbath. Did they escort her out of the building too?

  6. Not a big surprise, you are right Rosenheim plays favorites especially with former KRON peeps. Plus while Roberta is popular, she is getting older and I'm sure she is making good money. KPIX continues to hire younger and cheaper.

  7. There were other "circumstances" behind this move. Rosenheim (good guy) was the one who oversaw the pushing out of Sam Mohr in favor of Roberta, so I'm not buying the fact that there is any bad blood between them. His hand was forced. New York is driving that bus. I have no doubt he grew tired of her extra-curricular "antics", but who cares, it's Roberta.

    She will be missed.

  8. This is not good news...her personality far exceeds her wonderful job as weather person...and her wardrobe is fantastic...the guys could never keep up with her...this is a big loss for KPIX...they are going backward instead of forward

  10. Media outlets in the Bay Area...and I'm sure throughout America...are going to hell in the proverbial hand basket. Politics seem to play a role in things and Roberta's dismissal. It sucks. It's all about going cheap and how far you can push your nose up someone'a buttocks. Survival of the fittest..or the pushiest...or who has the bigger lips. Thank goodness DirecTV has many channels. You don't have to watch local TV if you don't want to...and why should you? It sucks.

  14. Always amazed at the kvetching about high paid media personalities who are let go. Such moves are part of the business and everyone who participates accepts it. That doesn't mean it won't suck when it happens to you but having a gig is not an appointment for life. IF she was illegally harassed, she can take legal action. But if this is a discretionary move, that's within the purview of management. Roberta Gonzales will find another job and can still do all the charity work she wants.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rosenheim hasn't been in charge of that newsroom for years. The only thing he can do is carry out New Yorks marching orders. He is responsible for one thing, MMJ's, which has been a disaster and sent the 5 and 6 ratings into a downward free fall. Agreed, KPIX is looking more and more like KRON!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Who gives a flying f...about Roberta f....ng Gonzalez? She's just an overpaid diva who was doing the weather on local TV and was damn ucky to make lots of money for many years. A news director has every right to hire and fire who he wants to. If a stations such as KPIX wants to go 'younger and cheaper,' as an earlier poster suggests, that's KPIX's right!

You folks who are always complaining about people being fired and "things were better back in the good old days!" need to wake up and smell the coffee! In case you missed the boat, these are the 'dark days' for the media, but one shouldn't get all weepy eyed and wring their hands in frustration over the firing of one overpaid weather person.

If you're going to get upset, get upset about things that are really bad, such as the continued war in Iraq, the killings in the city, the cuts in our educational system, or global warming. Sheesh! Those are the things to get upset about, not the firing of some overpaid ditzy diva who does the weather on TV for crying out loud!

Roberta Gonzalez knew what she was getting into when she got into the profession. Hiring a lawyer? What's that going to accomplish? They had every right to fire her. What, she's going to sue them or threaten to? Give me a fricking break! That's a joke! Get over it people...move on, this is 2012, not 1988!

    1. I agree with 10:31. She was probably making $250k + per year to essentially read a teleprompter. Not much sympathy when many people are grinding more than 40 hours per week just to make ends meet.

Younger and cheaper is the new normal.

These people know how cutthroat the media world is.

    2. Shut your mouth. Just because people are upset about RoGo being let go doesn't mean they are not paying attention to other news of the day. Some of us have huge hearts and feel pain for Iraq, war veterans, the unemployed, Syria, Aurora CO and the 700 pound turtle that washed up dead in Monterey. Shedding a tear for RoGo does not prevent us from shedding tears on other fronts.

Many of us have faced, regardless of our field of work, have experienced this in one way or another. Ms. Gonzalez was highly paid and for a long time enjoyed a relatively prestigious position in a glamorous industry.

  30. I read the previous comments, and I admit I should NOT have been surprised at this move by KPIX. I WAS surprised when they renewed Ken Bastida and Dana King's contracts, as they are still two of the highest paid tv people in the Bay Area. I realize they probably got renewed at less than they were making, but still, they are highly paid for such an 'easy' job, as another poster said. Roberta Gonzales, like John Kessler and Sydnie Kohara, made a WHOLE lot of money over the years, and the new economy, such as it is, means that people are paid less and have to work more. This is why companies are reporting such HUGE profits now, in the midst of a suck economy, because their labor costs are WAY down, and yet, they are still producing products. In the media markets, as we have seen with the newer younger reporters, they are doing the jobs that the formerly higher paid reporters like Sue Kwon, were doing, and at much lower salaries. Let's face it, Cate Cauguiran is a total hottie to look at, and she is a really good reporter, and she is probably paid a whole lot less than what Sue Kwon used to make when she was with KPIX. Roberta is just lucky to have lasted this long...

  36. I've been familiar with Roberta Gonzalez's work since her days doing weather on the early morning news at NBC-owned WMAQ in Chicago. Back then she rubbed me the wrong way - her early "weather bunny" work and her diction drove me batty. My sister and I still make fun of her over-the-top delivery: "And we have a pair of lucky 7s in Skokie at this hour!" (describing a temperature of 77 degrees).

THAT SAID, KPIX has made a bone-headed move here. When you have a winning formula in local TV today, you stick with it. And Ms. Gonzalez, despite the fact that she is not my personal cup of tea in all things weather, is considered Bay Area media gold; she has worked hard to put down solid roots and has been on the air here long enough to be considered a San Francisco TV veteran. I hope she takes local CBS management to the cleaners. And once she's done taking them for everything they're worth, KGO, KTVU, or KNTV would be wise to swipe her up.

    2. Excuse me very much. But I won not just one but two trials in federal court. We lost at the 8th circuit and at the US Supreme Court, only the woman on the court, Sandra Day O'Connor wanted to hear my case. She responded to our writ of certiorari that she wanted to hear the case. You need 4 SCUS justices to have a case before the nation's highest court. There is more than one way to win, to change public attitudes and policies. My case, though I won at the district court level twice in front of juries of my peers, turned out to be a landmark shot across the bow of the sexist practices of television news. The defendant, Metromedia, couldn't argue that I had in any way negatively affected their ratings. The ratings came out about week after I was removed from the anchor desk, and KMBC was NUMBER ONE, after years of being in third place. The issues raised were discussed all over this country and the world. TV news was a paradigm for the way women are treated generally in the workplace, at least in 1980) During the discovery phase in federal court, we found that there was not a single American woman over 40 anchoring a newscast at a network affiliate in the United States. Since my case, all of that changed. You may have noticed Diane Sawyer, who is my age, anchoring ABC World News Tonight. I know none of these other folks , except I've met Bill Schechner a few times.I can't comment on the merits or the issues in their claims or potential claims. Typically the other lawsuits I've heard of have been in state court, not federal court. I have talked to scores of news anchors and reporters over the years whose contracts were up and who tell me that management reupped because they feared that it would be a "Christine Craft" situation. Litigating in the federal system is enormously expensive, especially for defendants, as Metromedia discovered in my case. After I dared to challenge the sexist bs of Metromedia, KMBC's news ratings hit the basement for a very long time.Additionally, I got to travel the world on the lecture circuit for many years and meet incredible people like Anita Hill on the serious side of Title VII law and David Letterman for just pure fun. That's because mine was the first case. Television news then and now is not the be all and end all of human achievement or accomplishment. My experiences led to my going to law school and adding to my repertoire of survival skills. You can't fight every battle in life, but there are those you must engage,or you will always regret it. People often asked me, when I was lecturing and on the book tour, where I'd found the "courage" to file such a suit. I had been a competitive surfer before I was ever a TV anchor. I answered then, and I know it's true now, "When you've seen real sharks, the corporate ones just don't scare you as much! ". Broadcast entities don't get a pass to break federal or state laws.
Interesting that just last year, three anchors at KMBC, the station where I had worked, hired Dennis Egan, one of the top employment litigators in the country. Dennis was my lawyer who won two jury trials for us. Want to guess how the three anchors have done?
One more thing, my name is not, nor has it ever been Chris Craft. See you on the radio!

Do you really think the programs labelled 'news' have anything to do with news?
They are all programming designed to garner money, via the advertising, with KISS vision bites and sad stories of other peoples hardships.
The performers are employed for their looks and on-air confidence.
News reporting ability, meteorology degrees etc. are not required.
The MOST important section (the opiate of the masses) is kept to the end, to enhance memory retention, there we have a flashily dressed, fast talker of mumbo jumbo and master of alphabet soup. The sports guy!
The Dana King troupe brings a lot of imagined credibility to their show and is/was a good blend of distraction with a few snippets of non controversial news. Probably, the best of the three (Ashley and Melanie, the sports guy and the joker are real emetics)
Disposing of various members of a very successful (profitable) team is the height of stupidity but then who said television people were the arbiters of good sense?
Personally, as program directors display more and more stupidity, I just stop watching that channel.
Complaining to to any one at the networks will just be ignored (after all who do we think we are?) so I vote with my ability to restrict their cash flow and watch something else.
BBC America have half an hour of real news on PBS no weather, no sports. Of course, if I want weather info I can get that on my computer.

  44. Christine,
I am 6:25 and allow me to apologize for making a flippant remark that trivialized the significance of your legal battles. Furthermore I agree that management should not be allowed to engage in discriminatory employment practices against any protected class of employees and realize how difficult it is to prevail in court on these cases.

That being said, I do object to a kind of knee jerk assumption that whenever anyone is fired, that they have a right to sue and win a big payoff or at least achieve a settlement of some sort.

At some point, employers do have a right to terminate employees depending on the circumstances. Being hired as a TV weather person is not an appointment for life. If management is free to terminate employees so long as it is lawful and not unjustly based on protected characteristics of the employee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't disagree that anyone fired has a legal cause of action, or that being hired as a weather person isn't an appointment for life. You are absolutely right in your thoughts about terminating employees lawfully. Very rarely does someone sue in these matters, because it's generally understood that you'll have a hard time finding a "gig" elsewhere. It doesn't always turn out that way, but it is a consideration. Plus, anyone thinking of suing for whatever reason needs to know it's a long haul, you need to prove your case, and often your colleagues who initially give you high fives, may be reluctant to testify in your behalf if deposed or on the stand. It's not because they are bad people. One must pick fights in life very carefully.

Everything is always about HER. She would continually interupt Dana King and mug at the camera in agreement or disgust on news reports that had NOTHING to do with weather. For some reason they let her sit there at the desk with Dana King and Dan Bastida. Some days she looked wacked out stoned. and other days she would have a mean (bitchy look in her eyes and act like a real smart a$$.There was always a certain tension there on that news set with her there. She kinda self destructed just like Teralyn Jo.

  46. One of the main reasons I watch your station is because of the staff. How well they interact. I vote for Roberta's return.

  48. Roberta was the reason I watched channel 5, she was great and stood up for her forecast as compared to the rest of them in the Bay Area. I guess I will be going back to channel 2. Thanks channel five.

  49. I just have to add to this old posting - I moved to the Bay Area around the time Ken/Roberta were getting more exposure. I just remember seeing them at the Honey Wine Festival and they were both super nice - seemed to truly like interacting with the people. I stayed watching 5 mainly for them - the news is stale and weather reporting in this area is a joke (regardless of channel/radio station/etc) Coming from areas with serious weather issues, I figured early on that the weather reporting here is more entertainment than informational. I do like Roberta - she does a lot for charity and the area - and I am so sick of cookie cutter people - so I do enjoy any life she adds to the super bland news. First Elizabeth Cook - so so bland - but bless her heart she seems to want to be more than a pretty face. Alan Martin - snooze - and now Paul I swear sounds exactly like Alan - and meteorologist or not - I don't get anything useful from him. And w/all the jokes about "waxing gibbous moon" - how many people looked that up and actually learned something?

The main reason I posted today is that I just sat thru such an informational 5pm news - - breaking news on ways to save on cell phones you don't know - and it was a tip to get prepaid instead of contract! - followed by - hey if you pack a sandwich instead of buying one at the deli you'll save money! Next breaking news will be something like - if you close your window when it rains you'll stay dry! Even better is how these useless "tips" are shown over and over all week - like they can't come up with new tips for each day? I stuck it out with this station out of loyalty to Ken/Roberta but I'm done. When there is truly breaking news - it's rarely on there - even the Patch is better.

Just my opinion - so pls don't answer with comments about ethnicity, pay grade, female versus male, the war, etc. This is specifically a comment about moving Roberta off the main weather position.
