Steve Paulson is a fine weather guesser for KTVU's MO2; The Monday Start

Steve Paulson
Steve Paulson is my kind of weather guy. He understands that life is not on the line when explaining the mega issues of high-pressure systems and the marine layer, (which in weather-speak is "fog.")

Paulson, the meteorologist for KTVU's "Mornings on 2", keeps it straight and simple. That's still a good part of the Channel 2 business model. No-nonsense trumps zany antics. Not that Paulson ventures into any form of Al Roker territory, but the point is, he broadcasts the weather, keeps it tight and clear and generally makes a fairly good prediction.

He's also part of the dapper suit society that makes up the Armani contingent at KTVU, (Somerville is leading the post, with Ibanez just down a length.)

In any event, I like Paulson's understated delivery and calm demeanor. In that category too, Paulsen is quite the broadcaster, ever professional, and adept enough to throw out a few sly lines every now and then. It's a subtle signal to the morning viewer that he understands his role and thanks Steve, we get it.

  1. I remember when he started at ch 36,and looked like a teenager wearing his Dad's big suits. The cuffs went down to his fingertips. Steve has grown into that size now. Don't we all?

His weathercasting I think is a little on the conservative side..he needs to predict warmer temps for the mid and south bays. He goes by the airport temps from San Leandro-Hayward-San Jose..all can be 5-10F cooler then the city's themselves. I want to her its 70f or 80f,not 65f or 72f. Go with the warm Steve. Viewers like that. And most of us dont live at the airport.

  2. Great assessment Rich. Paulson is a pro. The whole Mornings On 2 team is pretty good with the exception of 'Doofus Dave Clark'. When he was on vacation last week and Mike Mibach filled in the on-air chemistry was clearly so much better and more relaxed. The team generally seemed to be enjoying each others contributions. Today, 'Doofus Dave' is back and you can see his co-anchors visibly cringe every time he tries a bit of what he thinks amounts to humor in his hand off's to Sal. Why, oh why does KTVU persist with this insult to our intelligence? Surely there's a Kindergarten somewhere that needs it's Principal back!

    2. Agree Mike Mibach is good for morning news

  3. I've watched Steve since he was on KFTY in the 80's. I still have a videotape of his weathercast then. Since day one, he has been the consummate weather forecaster.

He may be a bit conservative on his weather temps, but Steve has often gone out on a limb, predicting rain when all the other guessers hadn't a clue. Many times, he has even disagreed with Bill Martin ("chief meteorologist") and made his own calls. When he does buck the crowd, he is more often correct than incorrect. Of all the Bay Area weather folks, I tend to trust his predictions more than the others.

I agree with Rich's comments about his occasional sly lines. Always the professional, he seems to directly communicate with the audience with his occasional asides. He is the primary reason we watch Channel 2 in the morning, and put up with Dave Clark's strange inflections and misplaced emphasis.

  4. Unfortunately, I can't stand his voice, rhythm of his delivery, and lack of energy. There is nothing that differentiates him or makes him unique. His uniqueness is his voice and delivery, which is like fingernails on a chalk board to me.

  5. I agree he's one of the better weather-guessers, and I enjoy watching his reports. I think KTVU should also be given some credit for not selling Steve out for some bimbo who will turn heads (as is the current trend in the industry), irrespective of any weather.

    1. While I do enjoy a good looking "bimbo" doing the weather, Paulson is a pro, and a guy who makes you feel like he's giving you a personal forecast. Agree about the occasional witty lines. I've enjoyed his forecasts delivery for years, and hope KTVU is intelligent enough to retain him for a long time.

  6. We are truly blessed to have Steve Paulson here in the Bay Area.

  7. 100% Agree. One of the things I appreciated when it mattered was that he always mentioned weather in the Northbay including (specifically) Santa Rosa. Most weather reporters (and traffic) neglect to even mention anything (weather or otherwise) North of the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge :(

  9. I like Paulson a lot but I notice he nevers utters the word "Oakland" and he often omits it on the map. Not sure what that is about. He also could mention that the difference in temps from downtown Oakland to the Oakland airport, which can be significant. SF is not the only city with microclimates. Other than that, he's good. He sometimes calls for changes that even Bill Martin misses.

  10. He always seems half asleep to me. I like Lawrence on ch5 for my weather. He has a lot more 'zing' and is actually awake for his segments.

    2. Pam, what are you doing during business reports?

  11. Steve is in my 'top three' of morning meteorologists. His delivery is good and his forecasting is as accurate as it comes for the Bay Area. The only negative comment I have is that the forecasts from KTVU don't focus as much on the South Bay as much as the other local stations do (and that's the info I want/need), but that does not detract from the good job Steve and KTVU do.

  12. I like Steve, he and Sal are the primary reasons I watch in the mornings. I miss Ross and Mark Curtis.

    1. You can find Ross hanging out at Bean Affair Coffee in Healdsburg most mornings checking out the young women who come in.

  13. As a meteorologist I can tell you, hands down, he is the most ACCURATE forecaster on TV in all of Northern California. I know he does his homework and looks at much more data and maps then the others and it shows. He has the right delivery and he does challenge others when he knows they are Following the weather service forecasts off the internet. He does his own forecasts and doesn't follow anyone else. He says the "why" of weather and is able to do it all in a couple of minutes.

  14. Ch2 also has the worst weather guy...Mark Tamio. Uh, he's...uh hard to...uh watch. See where I'm going with this?

Between Tamio, Hener, and Clark, it was getting out of hand so I went to Ch5. That has backfired though, nubla followed my to 5 and I have to keep the clicker close by.

  15. I believe Steve Paulson was with Channel 36 years ago when they had the hippest news team with Jan Hutchins as news anchor, Robert Braunstein with sports, and Steve Paulson with the weather. Jan Hutchins had a good sports show with the likes of John Shrader and Mitch Juricich as regulars.

  16. As a fellow morning TV forecaster I think Steve Paulson is very good. Not only is he accurate, but he's very watchable. Getting in to work at 3 AM is very difficult. You're trying to produce accurate and watchable weather segments in a big market while being under the gun. You have to be accurate for all the tiny microclimates in the Bay Area and pretend like you want to be there in the morning. Much harder than it seems. Steve does a very good job IMO.

  17. Thank you Steve Paulson for being a great weatherman. I live in Humboldt and appreciate the accurate weather report that Steve gives about not only the Bay Area but also shows/includes the North Coast area of Humboldt in the forecast.

  18. I have been a consulting Meteorologist for 25 years and grew up in the Sacramento Delta region. I remember Steve from ch 36 . My father would get so mad at me for going up on the roof and adjusting his non working rotary antennae so I could get Steves nightly Forecast . He is an icon of the local weather and between him and Sal it is the only reason I watch the channel . The new format they are using is a bad version of the today show. And I'm not in the least impressed with that. I'm glad Steve is still around but I do wonder why they never offered Steve the position of chief .? Steve is a true Meteroologist yes ? That would be one of only a couple reasons why he would not be
