Cumulus All-Out on CBS Radio; Secret meeting in Atlanta

A secret meeting in Atlanta with all the various heads. Pounce was the operative word. They spoke to a lot of people who are in the business of financials. And in addition, a whole lot of lawyers, accountants, and those that have a keen awareness of the industry.

They know that Redstone-- Moonves, (Les) too, are less then thrilled with the radio division of the corporation, (CBS). And with radio, comes along Cumulus. The ultimate aqusition. Excuse right now because I'm really laughing out loud. I mean, I'm so frickin' cackling I sound a lot like Bobby Fitzgerald.

There are several obstacles, but nothing too large. And they already have a relationship beckoning.

  2. Why don't we just turn over all of the bay area radio stations to Cumulus and let them downsize everything. Lou Dickey was heard to say the other day: "I WANT IT ALL!!!!

At least then there will be no pretense that radio is still alive in the bay area.

And in an interesting sidelight to all this, do you know what the age 35 and under crowd is saying?

"WHO CARES? I'M TOO BUSY TEXTING, TWEETING, AND TELLING MY FRIENDS WHAT I'M DOING RIGHT NOW ON FACEBOOK. BY THE WAY, DID YOU SEE THE LATEST VIDEO ON YOUTUBE? IT'S SO, TOTALLY RIDICULOUS! HEY, I'LL BE GOING TO THE BEACH CHALET LATER TONIGHT! CHECK OUT MY NEW PICTURES AND MY NEW 'FRIENDS.' BE SURE TO LOOK AT ME!!!!"

  5. Cumulus can only own 8 radio stations per major market (6 for mid-size markets). They wouldn't end up with all of CBS' stations here, unless they sell some of the ones they own now.

  7. NOOOOOOOOO! Cumulusucker media killed KGO, KNBR, and KFOG' this means they can kill KCBS and Live 105 too. Radio will become a total wasteland.

Hopefully this would get killed by the Feds for being anti-competative.

  8. I often hear it said that the 'market' self-regulates. That may be truer when the playing field remains level. But when technology morphs into to so many different venues and comm outlets almost instantaneously, it's almost impossible to re-wind, to go back.

Markets that were once strong before the Cumulo-devistation can never be rebuilt again. The chemistry, the personalities, the following, the familiarity can never be rebuilt. Suffice to say that we were there .... at that point in time ... when it came together so sweetly and for so long too.

So even though KGO is trying to rebuild its 'talk' bona fides on the weekends .. the KGO we once knew and loved .. is gone, gone, gone.

  9. As they say: "it'll never be the same." Those of us who were working in broadcasting for so many of the 'good' years are pretty upset about it. It's kind of like watching a member of your family run off and join one of those ridiculous cults and go off on a deep end.

Perhaps that's a bit of a stretch when comparing to what has happened to the traditional media, but isn't it a bit disturbing, even to those who weren't paying that close attention, that a 90 year old industry (radio, started in the 1920s), has been marginalized because a handful of companies (Cumulus, Clear Channel, and Infinity most prominently), who have downsized it and dumbed it down (even further than before).

The internet isn't free, and neither is TV, or the newspapers.
If you want any kind of new technology, you've got to pay for it.
Radio on the other hand, is free. All you have to do is turn it on (in your car or your home), and you can listen to news, entertainment, sports, music, talk, whatever. But the people who run it today are not radio people and guess what:

THEY DON'T CARE! ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS M-O-N-E-Y!

The idea of serving the public and following the obligations of their licenses that were granted by the FCC (toothless and ineffective) is totally foreign to them.

WHERE IS OUR CONGRESS...WHERE ARE THE ACTIVIST GROUPS WHEN IT COMES TO PRESERVING OUR RADIO INDUSTRY AND ALLOWING SMALLER COMPANIES TO STAY AFLOAT AND SERVE THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES?

    WHERE!!!!????

    1. Our Congress is bought and paid for by every industry in this country, and Cumulus is only doing what EVERY other industry in this country is doing. Dumbing us down. Eliminating free and easy public discourse on any and every topic. Moving all the $ from the 99% to the 1%. I could go on and on. And, WE ARE ALL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AND ALLOWING IT TO HAPPEN.
