An 'Obsession' with Radnich? Hardly; Sunday Sermon; 415 Media

Lately, I get a lot of e-mail telling me "you have an 'obsession' with Gary Radnich'". Really? I thought it was more about writing about Bay Area media people and Radnich, however more twilight in his career, is still a part of major SF-area mediaville.

Look, this is a blog about 415 Media. Most of the time, I state an opinion or write inside material that, hopefully, the readers find interesting and worthy of reading. That much is evident as the page views continue to grow and this site has become a part of the industry landscape.

Radnich, in spite of my own personal feelings, (and some of yours too), is still a significant player on the local scene. Whether consciously or sub-consciously, he maintains low-level gravitas--as such, I will write about him and you guys can add your two cents.

Ironically, Saturday's posting had a tone of supreme neutrality. There was no shots, no poking, no wanton hit, just a little tidbit on a past bit of local TV lore when Radnich ruled the land and helped evolve a popular Sunday night sports show at a pre-ESPN-prominence. It also highlighted a time when Radnich was king-supreme at once-mighty KRON and its most popular personality.

Obsession? No, not really. Just an acknowledgment of the obvious. Funny, even when I try to be objective, some of you interns and anonymous lads poke. Quite alright, part of the territory.

I've written quite a lot about Dana King too. And Mark Ibanez. Frank Somerville And Ronnnnn Owens. Obsession? No sir.

Sure, Radnich gets his share and beyond because he does and says things that elicit a good share of comments and e-mails. You want to talk about about obsession.

Bill King, the late, great pbp-announcer, used to tell me the play on the field dictated the style of the call. That same formula applies here, in a different manner.

The volume of mail and feedback on a given media person will dictate the amount of postings I write on them, mostly.

NOTE: We have gone away from advertising and will continue to make this site 100% reader-supported. As such, I ask you, if you can, to make a donation, (any amount is greatly appreciated) on the Paypal icon on the front of this blog. Your donation will help keep 415 Media completely independent.

All transactions are confidential and you do not need a Paypal account to make a donation. This site is created, produced, and manned by yours truly. It takes time and effort and in order to keep it sustainable for the future, I ask that you help out so that the information you and ever-growing 50,000-plus people who read 415 Media on a weekly basis can help keep it going without any advertising influence.

415 Media is free and will always be free to all of you who like having a 24/7 avenue to read up on the goings-on on Bay Area media. We like to post, mix it up, offer our thoughts and keep it ready, honest, sometimes raw, and unequivocally genuine.

We continue to grow, to pick up new traction and are read not only by all the media professionals, but more importantly, you, the great readers who have gravitated here to make 415 Media the most widely-read and followed media site in the Bay Area and beyond.

Please help us out.

Thank you for your contribution.

    1. Gary all but dances with his pants down and makes wild and stupid statements that plead "Hit me with a cream pie"
So,he craves attention..and he gets it.

    2. Agree. Radnich loves to hurl unbridled insults to his fellow collegues in the profession (see Russ Shimoka and Stuart Satow etc).
How Gary Radnich gets away with his cheap shots is unbelievable.

  2. I could point out to the turn the radio off if you don't like Gary crowd, that they shouldn't read this blog (not to cost you money Rich!)..But I think I should point out instead that Raddy has bigger worries in life then what guys at the 415Media Bar and Grill think of him. His biggest enemy is Lew Dickey and Cumulus. They gain to cut him to save money. If he's sweating at night..its not over 415 media, its if Dickey can cut a man with Parkinson's,he can cut a guy with payments due on his Bentley.

  3. Rich, Don't let the idiots affect you. I have noticed that so many sfgate commenters seem to be waiting night and day in order to offer a negative thought. Interesting that few people offer comments on the Inside Bay Area (Tribune, CoCo Times, et al) because one cannot hide behind a false identity (unless one is smart and has created a false Facebook identity).

Just for example, one of your commenters has a big thing against Ronn Owens (well, there is more than one person....) and continually throws out his "real name," as if it's a bad thing to use a stage name. When I mildly mentioned that maybe the commenter could refrain, the person tried to use the bat on ME. All the while NEVER using his/her name HERE! Which was of course, ironic, but the commenter could never grasp the connection.

Long story short, just write whatcha want. And let all these ANONYMOUS commenters have at it with their "valued opinions." I am pretty sure most don't have blogs or write for a living!

    1. Yes, undoubtedly your "valued opinion" is more valuable than all those other "idiots" .... And the reason would be why?

    2. @Lanie, why do you continue to insist that calling Ronnnnald Lowenstein his real name is a form of bashing? His last name is Lowenstein, he is a proud defender of Israel and a Jew like myself. Perhaps you don't like Jewish sounding last names? Look in the mirror honey.

  4. The first and ONLY reason I come on this blog is when you go after Radnich or KNBR. I myself love Gary.

    "Haters gonna hate"

Keep up the good work and quit kissing up to D.Douche and start ripping "Rudy" more. Love watching him stand there while Barnett talks for 5 straight minutes LOL

  5. Rich...I know you briefly alluded to BILL KING in your post and I just want to say once again how everyone who listened to him for years misses him. Bill had an amazing durability as well as a special versatility. He was the lead radio broadcaster the Warriors for 21 consecutive years (1962-1982), worked as the number one radio for the A's for 25 more seasons, (1981-2005) and spent time on 'the Dark Side,' toiling for the the Oakland Raiders from 1966 through the 1992 season.

King was an excellent baseball announcer and an even better voice in the NFL. His most memorable work was associated with the Raiders during their glory years of the 70s when his signature calls from classic games such as 'the Heidi Game,' 'The Sea of Hands,' and 'Ghost to the Post,' thrilled local fans.

But Bill's best work was with the NBA. King was there during what I believe was truly the 'Golden Era' of pro basketball.
There were fewer teams, less TV, less money, but more superstars on each club, and a greater respect from the players for the game itself.

Guys like Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Wilt, Russell, Thurmond, Rick Barry, Kareem, Frazier, and Earl, 'the Pearl' Monroe were some of the big stars in those years in the 60s and 70s.

Meanwhile the Warriors were in the playoffs most of those years, made to the NBA finals three times and \ won it all in Cinderella Fashion in 1975.

As many reading this may also know, Bill was humble, unaffected by his celebrity, always friendly and helpful to young broadcasters, and his interests ranged from Russian history, the ballet, and painting, to sailing, gourmet cooking, and the opera.

Talented, colorful, versatile broadcasters with a heart and soul such as Bill King's are extremely rare these days, and that's a shame. While we will probably not see his likes again in these parts, he'll always be remembered fondly by those of us who were lucky enough to cross his path and listen to his great artistry on the air.

  6. Garry's having a cackling day..no matter what he says,he thinks it deserves hysterical laughter and applause-that he's doing for himself. More of the failed comic in Vegas sadly still doing the same old schtick..Kreuger's part is a puppet. Look close and you see the strings at the corner of his mouth creating that fake smile.

  7. Rich: KNBR has delayed the availability of Murph and Mac's Pod cast link with Krukow today at 730am....

Sounds like Baer got his feelings hurt......

    1. @4:11 I'm really curious about the above, namely "Radunich,Radnich,Ratnich,Fatnich whatever you want to call him, has backstabbed, burned, slandered & thrown under the bus many a colleague, friend, family member, aquaintance, public figure"

You or someone else like you goes on about this all the time and I really don't know what you're talking about.

Could you please give some details about backstabbing, burning, slandering, and throwing under the bus?

Seriously, I've been listening for years and have no idea what you are talking about. Please give some specifics.

      Thanks in advance

  11. Rich is what you call a superfan, he wants to be one of the guys but he doesn't have what it takes to get in, he is like one of the bay area media wackpackers, like Howard Stern's wack pack.

  12. Whatever happened to Kate Scott?...first week on the job, revealed she had a wife..and added she wanted to make the show "more inclusive"..I.E., not just frat boys thinking.
And she's done squat of that. Just dead pan humor at nobody's expense. Never a mention of Lesbians in sports,or gay games. Like ALL KNBR mouths she has said "She's never been told what to say"..Well,they must drop huge hints of sign or body language because she's as safe as a kitten.
She figures she doesn't need to be the pioneer?..and she hasn't. Hasn't stood out in any positive way at all.

    1. Kate Scott continues to be entirely forthcoming about her sexual orientation, perhaps unnecessarily so.

To criticize her for not making more of it is nonsense. She is the third wheel who does traffic and sports updates. She's supposed to interject her own sexual orientation?

  13. No need to apologize Rich. Radnich and other media personalities are public figures. They know criticism is part of their profession. There was a time when the Mercury News and the Chronicle had media critics. But those days are over.
This website is our only source.

  14. Yes Rich, you are obsessed with Radnich and Owens.

How about some dirt on Leigh Glaser?

  15. Radnich went on about some website that makes fun of peoples looks or physical defects. He was shocked that his hand was mentioned. He never said whats wrong with his hand-no surprise since Radnich is a backwards thinking man who feels shame and keeps silence in a day and age when people with a disability shouldn't feel they have to hide it.
He wouldn't say the name of the site-only its been doing it since 2009. But,out of the blue he turns on Rich "Some guy I tried to get a job, just turned on me for no reason". He says "No reason" as an excuse for many he's shown his true colors too. And then added he should wipe that guys face with (Radnich) his contract and walk away.
Like many in the media who take a side of the wrong..Radnich always says he can take the criticism that comes with it. No,he can't. Krueger, biggest hypocrite there is "It says something about there life"..the man fired for bigoted statements saying THAT??..

One last -lol- Radnich got in all HIS bosses names and said in so many words,he loved them all!

    1. How can you say he "turned on Rich?"

He never even mentioned his name and no one would know who he's talking about except those who habituate this board and noted the incessant anti-Radnich screed.

  16. Radnich's backwards thinking is why he has said Kareem Jabbar should keep his recovery from cancer to himself,or that Jerry West should never talk about his depression. In Radnich's small mind, they should be ashamed..just as he is over his hand. It also explains his love for "Bill and Lee" even after Ralph's firing. Maybe Radnich thinks Ralph should never have talked about his Parkinson's.
People with disability's shouldn't be ashamed or have anybody think they should "never talk about it".
Very ironic that Gary's very next topic was the Ranger hitter who battles alcoholism. Radnich doesn't get it.

  17. Regular readers of 415 and Raddy's listeners have heard both hosts talk about their falling out. If your saying that a guy who lives in a cave or under a rock would have no idea since he never reads 415 media..Of course he wouldn't know a thing. Whats your point?.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @4:43 First of all, you don't have to live in a cave or under a rock to never read or even heard of 415 Media. Those who do read or know about this blog may constitute perhaps .01% of the total bay area population.

Second, my point is that you can't say Radnich turned on Rich since he is entirety vague about referring to any specific individual and only those who have read Rich's endless discussions about his relationship with Radnich here would ever know that the person could be Rich.

If A has a blog and constantly criticizes B and eventually B mentions that there's some obscure blog that's saying nasty things about him, that hardly constitutes B turning on A.

    2. Yes I can say he turned on Rich, because it was what he did..he was speaking on a site he never knew about (and THAT wasn't 415 media for sure!)..then ,for no reason blurted about the guy who wanted help ,etc..Rich. So,what does Rich have to do with a website that posted pics and comments for three years about Radnich's hand?,DONT YOU GET IT?and btw,no,I haven't seen the site or know its name and don't care to.
Its Radnich who outed his handicap..I never knew until he went on about it on his KNBR show. And it makes my point that for decades he could have joked and been proud of what he did with half a hand..instead of 19th century being ashamed of it.

Fine, If you believe Gary Radnich turned on your beloved Rich by not mentioning his name or his web site with a vague reference that leaves great doubt about whom we was even referring to, feel free.

It was really vicious, wasn't it....
