KNBR acts like the 49ers/Manning Union Has Happened; Why Let Facts Get in the Way of a Good Story? Oh Because

The 49ers may, or may not, sign gridiron God, Peyton Manning.

KNBR, showing its self-absorbed sports journalistic gush, has all but reported it's happened.

And it hasn't happened...yet. Yet, Knibber, with interns and 11 buck-an-hour producers monitoring Internet sites, is going full gaga over the story that isn't a story.

It all began on the Radnich show at noon when a "news" update was highlighted as if, indeed, Manning was signed and headed to San Francisco. In fact, as we all know at the moment, Manning hasn't signed a thing.

Adding comedy to the proceedings, "Fitz and Brooks" began pumping out "news" that "Manning is working out with the 49ers." Well, not really. Reports said that Manning took a physical with SF, as in past tense.

Again, we don't dispute the news that Superman is on the 49ers radar. He may be packed for SFO. But right now, he's NOT a 49er.

But at KNBR, why let facts get in the way of a good story.

  1. And don't forget Monty's ridiculous 5 minute, 2 minute and 1 minute countdowns to the "Breaking 49er news that will blow your mind!" (on KGO).

  2. $90 million for 5 years says Manning ends up in Denver...though sentimental for the Titans and Tennessee, where of course the legend of Peyton began...that and the signing great FA's by that the Titans.

But that would take a real sports pro to vet that information

  3. Radnich claimed KNBR broke the story..and neither Scott or Kreuger said otherwise. Of course the Radnich man will say he was just "playing"-what he always does to cover for lies, insults, his fathead mistakes. And if you didnt get that he was kidding..then I guess you felt KNBR really had broken it. What fine journalistic ethics. And ask ESPN if they think it's funny for a large market station to claim it broke the story.

    1. Come on man, are you really that stupid to not know he was being sarcastic? I don't care if you like Radnich or not but anyone with the slightest bit of common sense can get the hint.

    2. Sure I knew he was lying through his teeth.Didn't I MAKE THAT CLEAR? But he didnt say it as obviously sarcastic as you make it sound. Like a fast talking swindler Radnich has that way of being..disengineous as Rich Leiberman said . And when the heat for he said gets higher..Then he plays the "It's JUST schtick" card.
Something else-when your demographics are in the 18-24 then on up...that's a whole lot of young guys the rest of the day thinking KNBR broke the story. They -unlike you and me- believe "Grandpa Gary".

    3. Agree with 2:07pm post. Radnich is full of false sincerity.
Radnich's out is always "I was just using Schtick".
This is the man's motive for justifying his rants and then to rationalize eveything with "It is my Schtick".
You have no credibility Gary. Your act is old.
Radnich has become a Bay Area cartoon character.

  5. The guys have 95.7 The Game have a hard on over this too.
Rich, why wouldn't this be a huge Bay Area sports story? The Niners were the "secret team" who visited Manning on the down-low. This has tons of local interest, especially as it relates to Alex Smith. Now we know what the hangup with the Smith signing was.

  6. It will be interesting to see if the Niners want to invest a ton of money on a guy who's better days are not only behind him, but who's very presence might disrupt the excellent chemistry the Niners have developed over the last few years.

I'm sure Harbaugh is intrigued by the possibility of bringing in Peyton Manning, but why would you want to bring a guy in for a year or two and put Alex Smith on ice? Smith may not be an elite QB, but he proved last season that he's one of the better ones in the league, and I don't know too many other QBs that could have led a team to not one, but two comebacks in the final minutes against a very solid Saints defense in that first round playoff game.

If Manning were signed, there would be no point in putting him on the bench, so my question is this: Does Alex Smith deserve to lose his job and should the Niners take a risk (a lot of money and the chemistry issue) to bring in Manning? I understand why 'they're kicking the tires' on Peyton Manning, but I think that Harbaugh and Baalke will come to their senses and realize that this is a bad move. Certainly there's a possibility that Manning could reclaim his old form for a year or two, and who knows...he might lead the Niners to the Superbowl. But I think the chances of that are very slim at best, given his tenuous health.

  7. I am constantly astonished by the gall of KNBR. They have no reporters covering the Niners or any other of the bay area teams, yet they think they can 'break stories' by having their talk show hosts react to rumor and innuendo that is posted on the internet.

Whatever happened to good old fashioned journalism and having your own producers and talk show hosts do a little digging? But I guess that's an arcane concept in radio these days, as ESPN breaks more bay area sports stories KNBR.

That's pretty sad state of affairs, but I guess it's par for the course for 'The Sports Leader.'

  8. KGO was just as bad. Wolcoff was going nuts about the prospect of Manning in SF. The whole thing reminded me of the times when news outlets show up in Oakland wishing a riot will ensue...

  9. The possibility of Manning coming here is a big story. KNBR is the 49ers station. What do you want them to do..ignore it?

  10. The reaction by Rich Walcoff does not surprise us.
He has always been a homer for the 49ers.
    Good on-air control there Rich.
    You gotta like that objectivity.

  11. hey rich what about this scenario
Same agent for smith and manning...
manning decides to not come here...
Smith is pissed and goes to Seattle
    Colin kapredunk is our QB...
Harbaugh loses all credibiltiy in the "clubhouse"
Moss crosses the line with one of the cheerleaders....
Barbieri jumps off the GG bridge...

1 out of 6. I'll take the Ralph is MIA for the loss of the other 5.
