Is it possible to slightly miss the Ray Taliaferro Show?; Ex-KGO host still elicits strong emotion; Friday Fish

Can you miss a secret craving, an instant fix in the middle of the night? Of course.

Ray Taliaferro, one of the dismissed hosts from the albatross station, was that sometimes guilty pleasure. He's gone, but certainly not forgotten.

While most of the other hosts have surfaced on other outlets, Taliaferro, has been noticibly absent. Outside of a few radio shots, Mr. T hasn't registered on the domain.

Taliaferro's 1-5 AM show elicited tons of feedback, good and bad; his critics, which were many, (including, occasionally, me), labeled the overnight a certifiable "freak show." He had his defenders too, and some were, and still are, quick to point out that Taliaferro was the most entertaining person on Bay Area radio.

His shtick with callers was overwrought--sure. But there were times when the proverbial twenty minutes of shouting and screaming bizarrities to a racist, say, in Marin, was downright funny and compelling, in a freakish sort of way, sort of like peeking at the body at the scene of an accident on the freeway.

Frankly, I thought Taliaferro was way too many times overboard, but he had me glued. You never knew what to expect. His political rants were legendary; frankly, transcending Democrat or Republican talking points. The overwrought temper tantrums and caller-driven drama presented a circus-like show in the wee hours, but as an entertainment conduit, nobody could outmuster the Taliaferro template. Whether or not you loved or despised him, most of you listened, well, at least a good few, just to hear if he'd go off on Roy in Livermore.

Oh, and did I mention he had a certain distaste for a certain past president?

Here's wishing Taliaferro well. I hope he pops up somewhere, (other than Facebook), just to get a little return of the Ray-craze.

  1. Don't forget he raised a little hell on KSCO. He rattled everyone's cage down in the Monterey peninsula. Isn't a movie about Ray being made? I sure miss his show. Especially the poetry and jazz.

    3. Used to love the poetry and jazz. Used to love his "talk". But the last year or two he drove me nuts as he seemed to love only the sound of his own (ranting) voice, would not take calls, and when he DID take one, he'd chop the caller off asap. I couldn't take it anymore. Do not miss him! :(

  3. After the debacle on KSCO, he may just decide to retire! I, for one, do not miss his rants & rage, but I definitely don't like the show that's replaced him. I'm sure he's home watching hummingbirds & trying to figure out how to use Dragon software. It's going to be interesting to see how they portray him in this "movie" he kept talking about.

    2. Of course I have....Ray talked about him all the time. I find it hard to believe they have enough material to fill 2 hours....although, Ray found a way to turn his blabbering into 4 hours a night! I would think that FFC would have better material to make movies about than Ray & his ranting. Maybe he should stick to wine making. Just sayin'

  5. He's the one I miss the least. I stopped listening when he started trashing Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primaries. It was ugly, ugly.

I also hated the way he treated his callers and will never forget how he slammed poor Sheldon, one of KGO's devoted listeners. It was downright cruel. I don't like cruel.

  9. That "cage rattling" on KGO might have scared off some radio stations who might have been interested in bringing him on board. After all, he went on the attack to the 90 year old mother of KSCO's owner. She held her ground, but still, although some people totally thought it was a hoot, it was IMO rude and over the top when you are a first time guest on a show. However, still, I wish Ray well. I, too, if I woke in the middle of the night would turn on my radio and listen awhile to Ray.
While I'm here, I noticed that KGO put up their new schedule.

  10. I used to love it when Ray, in recent years, would put on a long playing jazz CD and just let it run for a few minutes in the wee hours of the morning. Ray was a a jazz fan, and those of us who love the best American music ever conceived always appreciated it when he would play some Bill Eckstein or Miles.

I remember when I was a teenager listening to Ray when he was on KNEW. Back in the late 1960s, that station was owned by a company called Metromedia, and they were clearly the top talk station in the area with well known hosts such as the ultra-liberal Joe Dolan, the ultra conservative Pat Michaels ("I heard about an attempted communist takeover of San Rafael that will happen the next couple of days!"), Hilly Rose, Robyn King (he used to close out his show with, "and remember, love too, is a four letter word!") Van Amberg (before he became the KGO TV news anchor, and this is when he was Bill King's color announcer on the Raider radio broadcasts), and of course, our friend Ray.

Mr. Taliaferro had a very long run in local talk radio, longer that even Ronn Owens, but it was probably time for him to hang up the mike. Many times I heard him in recent years almost falling asleep on the air...not a good thing!

Working those brutal hours of midnight to 5 am must have taken a toll on the poor guy...those are the kind of working hours that will shorten your life! And let's face it..how many people are actually awake and even listening to the radio at the hours of 2am to 5am?

Hey Ray...enjoy your retirement and bask in the knowledge that you were a part of the Bay Area radio scene for almost half a century! That's quite a record my friend!

  11. The only time that there was a problem with Ray is when listeners
discovered that he was black. Ray was overly intelligent and it was problem for a lot of people which included media writers and
    perhaps jealous co-host on KGO.

    1. No, that isn't true! He hated anyone that didn't agree with him also! Ray was a mean spirited bully! It got to the point where he would only take one or two calls per hour & then he spent the rest of the time talking about himself. I know this because I am an insomniac that never changed the channel...lol His 1 to 5 shift was one I listened to often. It would get me so mad! I really should have changed the channel, but I love talking to other insomniacs that would bash him with me. He may have been great back in the day, but he was a grumpy old man by the time he was let go. And as far as the jazz music goes, it was better than hearing him talk, but he played the same songs over & over & over. The only thing worse than listening to him was listening to the people on poetry night that couldn't even read their own poems!

    1. Agreed! I will certainly miss Ray. Perhaps he didn't come across as having the "book smarts" that, frankly, unintelligent people use to gauge a person's intelligence, but he had a lot of "horse sense" and knew when people were being victimized, and had enough humanity to stand up for them, even when it meant turning his back on people of his own race. I respected the guy, and will miss him.

  19. Wow, thanks for all of the thoughts folks, good and bad.
I had a long run at KGO and it was fun! But these new folks that took over the company have no heart, no soul, no understanding or appreciation for the craft of radio, and so I guess I'm lucky that I don't have to work for their ilk.

Corporate radio is another sad by-product of our times, and crony-capitalism allowed this to happen with the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 which deregulated our industry. It's a cold comfort to know that you've been on the right side all of these years when things went into the dumper. And so my myopic right wing Republican friends, once again history has shown you to on the wrong side ONCE AGAIN!

    1. Thanks Ray for the many years of entertainment. I listened to you when you first went on the air at KNEW in 1967 as a senior in high school. When you joined KGO in 1977 thank goodness the station had a blow torch of a signal so I could catch your program in most states West of the Mississippi River. With the advent of the internet and shortly thereafter, streaming audio, it was easy to enjoy your show no matter where I was located. You are gone from KGO now and a void in my sometime sleepless nights is present. May your future be bright and filled with effervescence. "Right on the mark" is an integral part of my vocabulary thanks to you. Cheers.

    3. Ray -

I enjoyed listening to you for years -- though we disagreed, often. However, I always respected your opinion in voicing your viewpoint and your right to do so.

A couple of questions, Ray, now that you are out of radio. With your award-winning background in the National Association of Black Journalist, head of the Bay Area Chapter of the NAACP, city commissioner and strong leader of many non-profits and valuable causes ... question one:

As one whose job it was all-night to "keep people awake -- not lull them to sleep," a point well understood -- can you tell us whether your show was more about "schtick" from Ray-T than truth and frankness?

I mean, I get the rants, the raves and the fights and arguments with callers -- some who you banned, which is your perogitve. But was it "Ray's schtick" like it was with Kay Zwerling at KSCO?

Question two: I respect your haranguing of the Bush administration(s) and Republicans in general. However, I don't understand why you purposely told untruths about certain people and ongoing events. Several come to mind -- it was as if you just made things up that were "not" going on at the time. Why?

And question three: With your great tastes as a remarkably talent musician and leader of the Ray Tal Chorale, why did we not hear music from you -- but those minimual selections from Oscar Peterson, Bill Miller and so few others through the years?

Best to you in your retirement.

    1. The ratings company didn't do ratings overnight, but to Ray's dismay. That's total bullshit. The only time the overnight was rated was in a special rating that KGO had to pay separately and they didn't do that much.

  28. I'm sorry -- while I respect Ray's career accomplishments and his skills, I always found him to be pompous ass -- on air and off.

That Cure-A-Thon that he (admittedly) worked so hard on, and came across as such a magnanimous contributor on? Yeah, but you didn't see on-camera or hear on-air how he treated all the "little people" on the production staff, or among the volunteers, on his way to and from the spotlight. Not Pretty.

Then there was the time I filled in as an engineer for the show that preceded his some years ago. Ray ran his own board, the only KGO host who did so any more. I left a switch in a "normal" position on the board, not realizing he expected it to be put in a different position in advance of his show; I didn't know that so... he tore me a new asshole, screaming at me about my "incompetence", and that of the KGO engineering staff in general. I doubt he even knew my first name, and apparently it never occurred to him that all he had to do was say, "hey, tomorrow, will you please do it this other way for me." Instead, he seemed to take a perverse satisfaction in abusing those who worked around him. He literally ejected me from the studio that night with a profanity, and slammed the door in my face. The next night he was not only unapologetic, he actually wouldn't speak to me. There is no need nor professional excuse for treating people so poorly, and I have chosen to not forgive him for being such a prick.

Finally... to the poster who said "He cast a torchlight over the US west coast, night after night": Yes, he did! And you would have done the same, or I would have done the same, if you or I had a 50,000 watt clear-channel megaphone that easily blanketed the entire west coast of the country every night for decades after decades. That's not a testament to Ray Talliaferro, that's a testament to the power of broadcasting, and to a management team that knew how to take care of good talent. Because yes, he was "good talent," again I concede that point readily. Unfortunately, he was also a first-class asshole, and IMHO, that trumps.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Many kgo talent ran their own boards during the time you say they didn't. Your claim that Ray was a monster behind the scenes at the Cureathon..is absolutely, utterly outrageous. I will say however that if he didn't like you , he wouldn't pretend to like you. I like that in a man.

I think it's absolutely pathetic that many of you take shots at someone who obviously did something you couldn't possible have done, and did it pretty darn well for many years.
I believe in the old saying: if you can't say something nice about someone, then don't say anything and keep your lousy thoughts to yourself!

In case you haven't noticed, talented broadcasters such as Ray don't come along much anymore in this age of dumbed-down corporate radio. I guess you'd rather hear some windbag like Limbaugh or Hannity spew their racist, conservative nonsense!

  41. Reagan Taliaferro for President!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ronald Reagan was a right wing doofus who did the bidding for American corporations so that they could make a bigger profit. He looked at our natural resources as not belonging to the American public, but rather, being something that big business should be able to use to make a profit off of.

Reagan was lucky he wasn't impeached after the Iran/Contra imbroglio, and he was also fortunate that Gorbechev liked him personally and knew better than anyone that the days of Communism in Russia were on the wain.

Reagan was also the president who ushered in this era of naked
greed, 'I want mine now!' mentality that has taken over this country for many years. That kind of short-sided thinking that favors profit and selfishness over community service and long range planning has helped to plunge us into the economic morass that we're currently floundering in.

How anyone could actually think that Ronald Reagan was a great president is astonishing to me. When we look back at the great presidents of the 20th century they will go in this order:

1.) FDR ... ended the depression and led us through WWII, established Social Security and a number of other government agencies such as the CCC that helped get people working again back on their feet.

2.) Teddy Roosevelt... established the National Park System, expanded our foreign markets and influences, established work place safety, the 40 hour work week, and child labor laws. Helped to break up monopolies.

3.) JFK... Guided us through the Cuban Missle Crisis, the closest we've ever come to a nuclear holocaust (Nixon would have gone along with the 'Hawks' from the Pentagon, and bombed Cuba, setting off a Nuclear exchange) JFK also proposed the Civil Rights Bill, signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty which was signed by the Soviets prohibiting the open air testing of nuclear weapons, he created the Peace Corps, the job corps, national physical fitness programs, and he pushed hard on environmental legislation.

4.) Bill Clinton Guided America through a new era of prosperity and also pushed environmental legislation while keeping us out of nay major military conflicts from 1992-2000.

5.) LBJ Had it not been for the Vietnam fiasco (which Nixon unwisely continued for four long years at a cost of billions and 20,000 plus more American soldiers, not to mention hundreds of thousands more Vietnamese), Johnson would be more highly regarded.
He passed more important legislation in his five plus years than anyone since FDR, including the landmark Civil Rights Act.

Harding on the other hand, was like George W Bush, a complete Dolt, Coolidge was merely a front of big business, Hoover ignored the impending signs of depression, Ike did nothing for eight years,
Nixon gave us Watergate and four more years of Vietnam, Ford was not around long enough to do anything of consequence, and George Bush Sr did nothing of any positive consequence.
