KGO/Owens: less calls, more SweetJack ads; 'NewsTalk 910' power line-up; KPIX still looking at new anchors; KTRB adds Giants to Spanish broadcasts; Thursday grill

*If you're a masochist like me and like to torture yourself listening to the worst of terrestrial radio, then KGO should be pre-set on your car radio and in the kitchen and bedroom. To say its content is a mess would be, like, duh!

Most evident: listen to the non-stop SweetJack ads that permeate the entire daily run-down. In fact, the over-proliferation of the Cumulus, groupon-like tacky coupon ads overwhelm the show, even on mattress man's three-hour tour. (I can just imagine what he's thinking off air, when these gooey spots run every five minutes).

Speaking of Sleeptrain-Ronn, do you notice that the calls have become something of a rumor? In his opening hour Thursday, Owens did a fifteen-minute phono with the ever-annoying, Chris Matthews. (The lovefest was overwhelming). After the obligatory ten minutes of spots and news, Owens talked trivial minutiae about the lout stuck on Telegraph Hill and finally took a call, (a guy with an accent). He was promptly cut after about five seconds. Cut to more SweetJack spots and one last caller, an older lady near the top of the hour, who was given about thirty seconds before she was cut. She was elderly, which in Owens's world, means bye-bye.

One hour. Two calls. And a barrage, onslaught really, of spots, the bulk of which consisted of SweetJack. Oh, and a smarmy Brian Copeland in-studio plug for the "R and B joke hour", Friday.
Notice a trend? Even in the "new" KGO "810" "content" factory, on its franchise and only "talk-show", there's more spots and less calls. Calls don't necessarily dictate the success or failure and fluidity of a show--sometimes, in fact, they detract. The point here is clear and evident: less people are calling and even more have trailed away. I can't wait to see Owens numbers in the coming months--should be very interesting. (No -hit, Sherlock!).

*Yeah, they don't have the strongest signal, but ClearChannel's "News-Talk" 910 AM has a power line-up from morning to night. I'm not a Rush Limbaugh guy, but he's the top banana in the field. And I like the new afternoon shows with Len Tillem highlighting Gene Burns, (when he's back) and Alan Colmes.

*At KPIX, they continue to have practice runs with potential new anchors. I'm told a change is imminent and a few worried faces have surfaced in the lunchroom.

*KTRB, the fragile 50,000-watt outlet with ESPN Deportes programming, has added the SF Giants to its schedule, with 2012 home games being broadcast Spanish-language. That makes sense.

*Gil Gross sort of mentioned that he's probably done doing talk shows on his fill-in on 910, Wednesday. I would bet that Gross goes back to news anchoring at ABC Radio.

*The cranky old man is back on Knibber from 9-Noon with the new-improved kiss-ass that has all the interest of milk toast. The blind leading the blind. And yeah, you're right: say something over the line about the Giants, and you'll be back in Visalia.

  1. I am not proud of it, but I continue to be happy to hear that Owens is having a hard time. I will continue to feel this way until he attempt to make amends for how he treated his former listeners and former "friends". I don't like being meanspirited, but I can't seem to get over it.

  2. Sounds as if Owens will be a sacrificial lamb when his contract expires. How? Cumulus will blame him for his falling ratings numbers as an excuse not to renew.

  3. I actually turned the dial this morning to KGONE for 5 minutes before 9:00AM.
Wow, they had a 5 minute segment justifying there endless coverage of Banana Sam and why the listeners enjoyed the topic. Really, are they trying to convince the listeners or responding to all the negative press about their boring coverage.
I had a friend call me yesterday and say that she noticed a difference in the calls on Ronn's program, just as you said. She asked me if I ever listened to that station, well after 15 minutes she agreed that it would be KGONE to her also. I never knew she listened to 810, but now she has 910 on her dial.
    Loved listening to Gill yesterday.

  4. Did Ronn Owens just sign off the air with the comment "I enjoy my life I enjoy my Job". OH MY GOD what a jerk!!!!

  5. Anon: 11:21 You are definitely a better person than I am. When it comes to Ronn, I've rather enjoyed mocking him since Dec. 1st. I made the mistake of tuning in when he defending the right to carry loaded weapons on commercial flights. Seriously? Ronn, you can't even handle a live mic, let alone a gun with live ammo. Did he forget to take his meds that day?

I've never understood what Chris M. sees in Ronn. And they said it would never last...

  6. I think today might have been extra hard - For Owens I mean...

I turned on KGO near the end of the RO slot, thinking to catch the top of the hour news and his sign off was a listless:

Thank You for listening, What can I say? I love my life and I love this job. (praphrase but very very close)

I was never a Ronn fan, so I am not attuned to his little vagaries, but it sounded flat and empty.

All I can say is, Best of Luck to Ronn! (in a sarcastic sort of way)

  7. I agree with 11:21. I find myself offended that he acts as if nothing has happened or that he does NOT owe his listeners an explanation. It's NOT the way it was a month ago, the station has indelibly changed yet he absolutely pretends as if nothing HAS changed. I've lost faith in him and his judgement. Granted he may be muzzled by his new bosses and they may have threatened him in some way that we don't know, but just an acknowledgement would have been appreciated. How about a show on the state of radio today with pros and cons about deregulation? That would go a long way IMHO.

  8. Rich, I'm surprised you haven't been dinging Radnich more lately. Yesterday's show featured Gary "rapping" that was so embarrassing that even Kate Scott couldn't go with it. Today, he went on for minutes about Jon Gruden having a TV job cause he was "cute" even though P-Con and Kate again disagreed vehemently. This is sports talk? Also, he took a shot at you a few weeks ago when he mentioned he had a new contract.

  9. Inundate Cumulus with telephone calls and faxes.

    TEL: (404) 949-0700
    FAX: (404) 949-0740

Keep 'em busy and waste their time, let them know we are here.

  10. Newstalk 910 ...YAWN. Almost as stale as this snooze blog. So when is your next appearance Dick?

  11. Me too. At the rate this year is going on his show, he will certainly earn his $1 mil salary. He must have to do a lot more preparation because he has to do back up topics to back up topics for each hour since the usual format is no longer working. Must mean Jared has to work harder too trying to book guests to talk to Ronn with few questions from callers. On Dec. 2 he told us over the air how much he LOVED his job. Wonder if he still does. If they are as smart as they think they are about programming radio, couldn't they have seen this coming? They really thought the audience would stay tuned to their feeble attempt at presenting local news, of which there isn't all that much except house fires lately?

From comments he made on the air the past couple of days, it doesn't sound like they're getting very many new jokes either. That hour should be interesting tomorrow.

2012 is going to be the longest year in Ronn's career, trying to keep filling up dead air. Good luck. None of the topics he's raised are working any more.

  12. You can just hear it in matress guy's voice that he is not a happy camper. He sounds deflated and without passion. If you thought he was phoning it in before take a listen now. I doubt he will ever atone for his disingenuos behaviour after the mass firings...

Now come on, Rich -- let's be accurate.

While it's true that Ronn took only two calls during his first hour, I listened to that hour's archive and timed the calls. the first call wasn't five seconds -- it was 27 seconds. And he gave the elderly lady one minute and twelve seconds.

That totals one minute and thirty-nine seconds devoted to callers during Ronn's first hour today.

    'Nuff said.

  14. WOW. I posted at 12:48 but just read from others how he signed off today. I think he's trying to tell us something about how he really feels about the bloodbath even though he's muzzled by $cumulus. Hard to feel sorry for him though. He's making lots of money and he only is on air 3 hours a day. Not like he has an 8-hour day to struggle through. You asked for it Ronn by signing that long contract without an out clause.

    Hey Mattress-Man Minion,
If you think 910 is a YAWN, you might consider getting out of Ronn's bed once in a while and turn on KGO. You will really be counting the ceiling tiles then.

  16. #11:59 -- I heard the Banana Sam story at 7:12 am, 7:58 am, and 8:15 am when I mercifully turned off my car rado. Unbelievable.

So what demographic is Cumulus trying to attract? It sure isn't anyone with an IQ of over 50. Oh, yeah, that prime listening audience of kids. So sad.

  17. Lookee here, another dickey intern at 12:38 pm right on schedule.

The only snoozefest is the KGONE station where you toil.

Why don't you read the employment posters up in the breakroom? Then you can become an "expert" on employment law. You already know radio.

  18. Radnich likes being cute at baiting his critics-the normal people. Today,he again did his I love Larry bit, something everybody present in the studio gets uncomfortable with since it weirds people out.
Radnich went on to say that Krueger's "comeback" --- a love story for he and Larry in otherwords. What's interesting is that Dan Dibley was told by Lee Hammer that "He could never come back to KNBR" and that if you compare Kruegers being welcomed back in arms by Raddy and Hammer, that means..If Dan Dibley ever says those brain dead F'ing Carrib Giant players were traded...THEN he would be welcomed back by racist KNBR and Radnich!.
One last-when Kate Scott hit him with some sarcasm on the Kruegerlove...on TV,the camera caught Radnich giving Scott a dirty look..then did his best to make like..he was only joking. Sure.
Weird-because his whole face just changes as Raddy's sociopath mind kicks in.
One last-he really insulted his female anchors last night..watch the replay on demand. The weather woman and Radnich must have said things..check the looks after the commercial too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I checked out Radnich today and heard the Gruden bit and yesterday heard him kiss the ass of a sportswriter while joking about his 'blackness', you know, to show how cool his is.
This is why I don't listen to his show regularly anymore. I don't find the lack of substance entertaining.

  20. It's going to be the R & B Joke minute....with so few jokes coming in. Now what are they gonna do?

Haa haa..what if everybody at KGO showed up for work and didn't do anything say anything on air...air silence in between the canned stuff. What would the mucky muks at cumulus do?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Maybe RO's juvenile producer Jared may have to set up some fake calls from the interns to make it look like there are a lot of listeners.

It may be possible that KGO's ratings go down so badly that Cumulus would be forced to sell KGO! Who knows?

Jared, if you are reading this blog you have got your head in the sands! You are the most hated broadcast professional in all of SF Bay Area now! Move over for an adult to come and clean up the mess you have made!

    ReplyDelete
  22. This was written in Examiner.com. This must have been fed to them by KGO -- like this would give them a listener edge. Now, do you really think that if there was a major disaster around here KCBS would go to the 5-minute network news and not cover the disaster, causing people to go to KGO to get the news (only to be interrupted on the 5's for traffic and :16 or :17 for ABC network news???) Most likely the network would be covering the disaster anyway. Local news events don't break out at the top of the hour. This is just silly.

"KGO radio is setting its sights on the top-rated all-news KCBS AM 740. In contrast to KCBS which airs five minutes of national news at the top of every hour, KGO radio airs 10-minutes of local news at the top of the hour, which could prove to be a big advantage when there is big local news."

BTW, it isn't really 10 minutes of news because traffic followed by weather starts at 5 after. It certainly seems like they have raw rookies launching this new news station if they think this kind of "strategy" is going to make them competitive with KCBS.

  25. I don't listen to KGO anymore AT ALL. It is on 910 now. :-) I'm in heaven listening to John Rothmann right now.

  26. @ 1:38 PM -- Right on!!!

...I like Radnich but have not listened to him on radio (not a sports fan). Have enjoyed him on TV. Honestly--do we need to slap everyone around on this blog?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Probably the reason there's so many SweetJack ads is because they're the only advertisers KGONE can get right now. Maybe they should run ads for KFOG on there since KFOG is running ads for KGO.

Yeah Owens is being disingenuous, but I wonder how much of it is his bosses putting the figurative gun to his head whenever he goes on the air, telling him "you say one thing bad about Cumulus or the bloodbath and we fire you on the spot."

    ReplyDelete
  28. KGONE thinks it can compete with KCBS? What are those kids shooting, drinking, snorting and smoking? According to KGONE "news flash" yesterday, the newest crop o' kids' life expectancies will be shorter than their parents and grandparents. This was top-of-the-hour news. Those Dickey interns need to get off their butts and exercise at noon instead of trolling Rich's blog if they want to outlive their Boomer parents in order to create exciting, lively radio shows!

    ReplyDelete
  29. "Why do I love America?"

Because those kids are in the demographic that Cumulus is trying to attract... 3 and 4-year olds.

  30. I can't think of any KPIX anchor whose departure would be a cause for displeasure as in the cases of the radio hosts cited here recently...especially Frank Mallicoat, a nice enough fellow but who talks like he just returned from the dentist with the cotton still stuck inside his upper lip.

As for Anonymous @4:39's comment: as long as posters are all allowed to be anonymous there will be plenty of bashing everyone around--people will say things they otherwise would not if they had to put a real name behind them.

  31. After the sun goes down, Knew 910 is difficult to listen to. I connect iheartradio to my radio and the listen to clear conversation. Believe me, I am very pleased to hear my OLD KGO favorites. Can't wait to hear Rosie Allen Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with 4:35pm. I'm listening to John Rothmann now and everything is right in the world again. I hope he can get a regular gig on 910 or elsewhere.

Hey all, the radio people all assume that you'll bitch and complain that you'll never listen again and then will be back a day or week later. Prove them wrong. I don't even tune in for a peek at the train wreck. I've gone cold turkey on KNBR since Radnich's little vacation power play to remove D Bruce. Other than the Stanford game, no KGO in about a month too.

Part of it is just not dwelling on the same negative crap (KGO is NEVER going to go back) so why not just support the good stuff like 910 or The Game or whatever and just ignore the junk.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Really nice to hear John Rothman today and Bill yesterday. Listened to KGO for almost 20 years. Cumulus obviously has the right to do whatever they want as owners and listeners can do whatever they want and I have voted with my feet. I won't listen anymore. I think Cumulus knew they would lose many but I assume they are not as stupid as we think they are. My guess is that they figure they can build a new base of listeners with a younger demo. I am sure they know they will take a dip initially. They have kissed all their old listeners good bye!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just FYI - Sweetjack is owned by Cumulus. When you can't sell ads you fill that space with your own s%#t, be it promos for your other radio stations (KGO spots on KFOG) or...Sweetjack on KGO and KFOG and 680 and The Boner and 1050... and every other Cumulus station in the nation.

the CC Times, the San Jose Merc, or even the SF Chronicle matter anymore, because they have been co-opted by bloodless corporate
cretins who are only interested in one thing...Money!

The only way you're going to get an accurate and complete picture of what's going on is to listen to KQED FM or subscribe to the NY Times. And perhaps if you maneuver through the internet you can also find some good blogs and websites.

There are a few credible news sources left in this me-first, attention deficit, I-want-my-gratification now world that America has become...but not precious few!

How did this happen? (that's a rhetorical question...because most of us know the answer to that one!)

  43. The "Anonymous" whose post was listed at 7:23 offers that corporate profit is the driving force behind television, radio, and newspapers.

    When wasn't it?

Back when the De Youngs owned the Chron, Hearst the Ex, in the days when Westinghouse owned KPIX and Gene Autry KSFO, they were hardly operating their properties as a public service from the goodness of their hearts. Money drove their editorial and programming decisions just as surely as today's corporations do.

Though of course it should be acknowledged, as I believe your point is, that today's large media corporations have found consolidation and standardization the preferred business plan to an extent that did not exist in previous decades.

    ReplyDelete
  44. John Rothmann managed to cram a month's worth of news and commentary into three hours.

  45. I'm really enjoying NEWSTALK 910am. All seemed right with the world today, working, doing daily chores, putzing around, while listening to Len and John Rothmann. I also haven't returned to KGO, after close to 30 years of being a listener. Ronn has nothing of interest to say to me, as his reactions to this whole bloodbath have been so damned shallow. Almost as shallow, that is, as the snarky comment by 12:39 PM

    ReplyDelete
  46. Let me preface this by saying I haven't listened to Ronn in years, his "On one hand, on the other" schtick wore thin with me years ago. Most of my KGO listening time was spent with Gene and John (and even that diminished when the amount of commercials started running longer than the calls)

I couldn't believe that Ronn would sign off like that, so I downloaded the 11-12 skipped to the end and listened. He sounds like a beaten man, I felt bad for him. Mind you I think how he handled everything has been horrible, but let's put a little perspective here, he probably can't talk about the firings on or off the air publicly. I'm sure he knows the only reason he's still on the air is because it would cost more to can him than to let his contract run out.

So yeah I felt kinda bad for the guy, at least as much as you can for a dude who makes what he makes.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ronn's signoff on thursday was downright creepy. "I love my life, I love my job". It was a weird thing to say, particularly when his tone wasn't at all convincing. I have serious concerns for his mental health.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have stopped listening to Ronn and KGO altogether. It will be interesting to see their next ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree that Ronn's sign off line about his life, and his job, sounded hollow. It was sad, in a way.

The station is a mess. And, those "why I love America," messages might well drive me away from Ronn and the weekend talk programs that I still hear (can't bear the rest).

There are endless legitimate complaints about KGOne. So, there's no need to create unfounded nasty jabs.

-There was nothing "smarmy" in the way that Ronn promoted the R & B. He did it as he always has. If you think that the Joke Hour, itself, is smarmy, do what he advises ... don't listen.

-I agree that Ronn's not addressing the changes at the station on his first day back from vacation spanned the gamut from disappointing to infuriating. But, to suggest that he can't handle a "live mike," is ridiculous.

Those kinds of things are picky and petty.

We need concrete criticisms when we e-mail Cumulus, and explain to sponsors why we're not listening ... both of which I've done/am doing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. As long as John Rothmann doesn't mention about his "dear friend Shirley," I'm all on board with him getting a show on Newstalk 910. In fact, I even emailed the station last night to recommend that they give him a gig.
Both he and Len were excellent yesterday. Thank you Newstalk 910 for bringing real talk back to San Francisco!

Oh, and some caller made a brilliant suggestion: have KKSF 910 apply for a call-in number that would be "80-80-910" Wouldn't that be great!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think the KGO ship has sailed and it ain't coming back. By the time they realize it was a diisasterous move it will be too late as the hosts and listeners will have long moved on. People will talk about it in the past tense "like remember when...." It will become a third rate syndicated station that in no way reflects the bay area. Those once great stations exist in every US cities. It won't change unless local people can manage these stations and I think those days are over too!

  53. I am shocked.
Turned on Chronicle Live last night and a very Puffy Radnich is in the host chair, sans tie.
Guests are Scott Ostler and Mark Purdy.

Does Radnich REALLY keep up this little with sports. He starts talking about Mark Davis and Scott says I know him. Incredulously Radnich does that half interupt half herky-jerky verbal delivery (what is that called in the business?) - seemingly intoxicated with the thought of Ostler knowing Al Davis' son Mark.

What am I missing? Is Radnich really that clueless?

Since his return to KNBR, that show has been awkward. Kruegar IS Kruegar but the show was better during Radnich's vacation...

    Help me about Radnich..

  61. I just want to say that I find many of the comments here on this post, interesting, informative, obviously very opinionated, and sometimes very passionate.

I DO understand that this is a blog and that so people are encouraged to 'vent their spleens,' but I sometimes get really weary of all of the
ticky-tacky, nit-picking, sexist, ageist, racist, and classless criticisms that are directed at some of our local professional announcers.

Yes, the quality of broadcasting has certainly taken a turn for the worse in recent years, and yes, the talent is diluted and 'dumbed down,' (not to mention younger, less experienced and cheaper!)

But all of the 'lols' (what in the hell does than mean anyway....come up with a word people!)
and the 'bitch slapping' and 14 year old vocabulary really is indicative of a world that is also rapidly 'dumbing down.'

Again, I understand that people want to get in
'their two cents,' but I really wonder how many of the folks that post these remarks have ever even spoken in front of a mike before or have actually even auditioned for a radio or TV job.
    I doubt many!
