Limbaugh to move from KSFO to KKSF January 3; Jim Kozimor is awful on KNBR; Mark Ibanez does news on KICU; Friday media notes

*Rush Limbaugh, Mr. GOP talking-point king of conservative radio, will move away from Cumulus' KSFO    and begin broadcasting on ClearChannel's new SF "News-Talk" KKSF-AM, 910 AM, (currently KNEW) January 3.

Cumulus has done this in other markets--saving money is a virtue. ClearChannel now possesses what promises to be a strong new station with the addition of Limbaugh, and adding ex-KGOers, Gene Burns and Len Tillem, (the "loyah").

*Jim Kozimor, a Sacramento-based alien who occasionally did free-lance PBP for various teams, and works the Raiders post-game shows for Comcast, has been subbing on Knibber's morning show. Kozimor's false shtick is noticeably transparent and predictably, awful, which automatically makes you a commodity on the KNBR airwaves.

*Mark Ibanez, sports anchor for KTVU, will do the news Friday, (tonight) at 7 for sister station, KICU. Ibanez, a three-decade vet, has done occasional news anchoring on Channel 2 and handled the chore with usual grace.

*Memo to Justine Waldman of KRON: Be careful when talking about the word, "package" as it relates to a certain news story that broke the other day involving the W's Monta Ellis.

*John Rothmann and Gil Gross are mulling new gigs, but trust me, both will land somewhere soon.

*JUST SHUT THE HELL UP: Steve Moskowitz, State Farm radio jingle morons, the Kaiser witch and oh yeah, Kars-for-Kids. Joseph A Bank too, I forgot.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all of you.

  1. Speaking of former KGO hosts, any idea where John Rothmann, Gil Gross, Joanie and Ray T are going to end up, Rich? Is it worrisome that nothing has been cemented yet?

  2. With the news and speculation of Limbaugh's moving to 910 and the filling of 960's schedule If Mike Malloy and Bill Press stay on, it might not happen with Clear Channel which is rapidly closing the coral gate.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Clear Channel / Premier shuffle "Coast to Coast" to overnight on 910 as well with two four-hour plays each 10-6 or 10-5 for now, pulling it over, too, from KGO.

KGO is making an all night change on Jan. 3 to a new-form "Red Eye Radio" with a dual host change, as Doug MacEntyre moves to AM drive on Cumulus owned KABC LA.

There is, reportedly, 7-10 pm still open, but CC is now decidely leaning towards the center and the right. Rothman and Ray wouldn't play nice there, imho. JB

  3. Is Moskowitz still advertising on KGO? I recall John Rothman had him on his show during the tax season last year. I thought Moskowitz would pull ads in solidarity with the fired hosts but I haven't heard it happened. On another note, if they move Limbaugh from KSFO who or what will take his place? Sussman must work cheap, not sure why they keep him on. His attempts at copying Savage are so obvious. He is a poor, a very poor man's Savage.

  4. As a 52 year Kaiser member, I cringe when I hear those stupid commercials. My premiums could be cut in half if they killed those commercials. Who, in the Bay Area, has never heard of Kaiser? Yeah, shut the hell up Kaiser lady, you smug-sounding witch.

  5. I agree: The Kaiser witch. On the new FM sports station, I stopped listening because the ad with her was running so much. That's how bad it is. I'll stop listening to Eric Davis because of an ad, yes, that's how "petty" I am. Or, how bad that ad is being repeated so often. Maybe it's not being repeated as much now, but I wouldn't know. I'm not listening.

Karel should STOP: talking over people, even former Hall of Fame KGO hosts who have much more class, and showed it, than Karel; focusing on his sexual preference (who cares?); focusing on his breakup (too personal and juvenile); focusing on his "not being able to get a date" (get real, Karel, you're not 13); making remarks how cute guys are (I wouldn't want a non-gay host to make such comments about non-gay women), etc., or he can expect fewer and fewer listeners, except on KGOE which has no listeners.

  6. Rich, I am in completee agreement with those ads/jingles. Like in the old days -- "Is the radio going to play the loooooooooonnnnnnnnng version of "Light My Fire" or the short one?" -- that damn State Farm ad is the same, except I breathe a sign of relief when it is the short version. My god, the Kars For Kids sounds like a child molester. And Moskovitz is a pain in the butt, and he has managed to run ads on a number of Bay Area stations.

Happy holidays and thank you for keeping us so well informed!

  7. Wayne Freedman is a nice guy and a great reporter. I think he was just having a little fun--lighten up, Rich!

  8. So now what happens to KSFO? Is there an opportunity for the Oakland A's in all this upheaval? They're still better off on a strong AM station even if it's not all sports. Talk radio will do well with 2012 being an election year, but after that Ronn Owens retires and Cumulus will know if "All News KGO" has worked. Facinating times we're about to enter here.

  9. Rich: Rush in San Francisco is this latest station a step up or another step down? 680, 810, 560, and now 910 KKSF, in terms of coverage it seems to be another step down. Just saying...

  10. your "kaiser witch" is one of the best actresses around...maybe "west wing" was a bit much for you, but she was incredible on the show

  11. I thought Kozimore did pretty well yesterday, at least he talked sports, and pretty diverse too. The usual morning show doesn't.

But today I see what you mean, he tried to get all cutesy a few times ("Women wearing jerseys are hot! Ladies, welcome you man tonight by just wearing a Patrick Willis '52', and nothing else. Will bring new meaning to the word 'sack' etc." (Silence from Kate btw).
    Changed stations.

  12. I know that Rush Limbaugh has many fans, but I'm not sure I understand why KKSF is putting both Limbaugh and Gene Burns in their lineup. Many (perhaps most) KGO listeners enjoyed KGO because they didn't want to listen to right-wing ranters with dittohead callers, and I presume that many of Limbaugh's listeners preferred his style over that of KGO.

By putting Rush Limbaugh and Gene Burns on the same station, there will be many listeners who love one and can't stand the other. Perhaps this will work, but it seems like a poor business model; most stations want listeners who will stick around, rather than tuning in one part of the day and tuning out in disgust in another part.

When Lee Rodgers moved from KGO to KSFO, he took a turn to the hard right (from his already conservative stand). I hope that KKSF does not pressure Gene Burns to move toward Limbaugh's style or toward the Limbaugh extreme of the political spectrum.

  13. Kozimor has been pure tapioca since he was in Sacramento. He IS the template for Comcast Sportsnet talking heads. Speaking of heads, he reminds me of "Davey" on the old "Davey and Goliath" cartoons and "Rallo" on The Cleveland Show looks like an animated Eric Davis.

  14. This is bad news as I don't want to listen to any station that airs Rush.

  15. I think Ray will probably retire and maybe write a book Julie. He's old. I think Rothmann is working on something. Gross will probably go back to reading ABC News at the top of the hour.

  16. The rest of the Justine story is that right before she read "package",she hesitated for a millisecond, finished, then realizing what she had just said on air, added "And lets just leave it at that"..LOL! Mark Danom had a smirk, when they cut to him,but didn't laugh.
I just can imagine her screaming at her writer interns "YOU realized I just said "package" on TV,ABOUT A MAN'S JUNK?!"

  17. And Rich-add those Les Swuab tire commercials. I hate fake country simpleton stuff when its really another big corporation at work.

  19. Cumulus losing Limbaugh, trashing KGO...Nice work Cumulus. I'm sure they are working at escaping from broadcasting the Giants next.

  20. Thanks for the update on Rush Limbaugh's move.
Maybe KSFO can put a decent conservative talk show in his place.
Limbaugh not my cup of tea. Too combative.

  21. I'll take Jim Kozimor any day over the teenagers who occupy KNBR's morning show.
At least Jim Kozimor speaks like an adult male.

  22. Oh, man, don't knock the Kaiser commercials voiced by Allison Janney! Besides being a great actress (did you catch her in a Lost episode?) I love her voice, I could listen to her all day. In fact, I've heard a couple of new Kaiser radio commercials recently with a new voice, and they fall flat.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Did anyone catch the KGO 810 weather man this morning saying how cold it was in sonoma county and that he's sure the fans were on all night to save the grapes. Grapes? In December? Now THAT'S newsworthy. AND should certainly be rehashed the entire day. I hope it even makes it to the 5 PM news.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Justine can talk about my package anytime! And Allison Janney certainly has a face for radio!

  25. it's not allison janey that the problem...it's the characterization of Kaiser healthcare as compassionate and thrive-alicious that is the problem...we know better.

  26. Speculation alert Part Deux:

Would Clear Channel / Premier / KKSF 910 kill two birds with one stone at remove both Limbaugh AND Coast-to-Coast from KSFO?

Yes, actually, they would -- thus leaving only 7-10 open on KKSF 910.

Who would fill KGO? Rumor was that Coast to Coast was moving to KGO on Jan. 3 to coincide with two new hosts of the revamped "Red Eye Radio". However, that could all change if the Clear Channel contract (of which they've exercised in quite a few markets to put Premier shows back on their own CC properties,) this would leave, potentially, dead air all night on KSFO, and at 9-Noon -- as well as a potential all nite opening at KGO if the new "Red Eye Radio" doesn't fly -- even though Cumulus owns it.

Just to be sure ... are there overnite PPM ratings now? I think they can be included for extra bucks as special daypart, but I forget. In the diary markets, the overnights weren't rated except by special report subscribed reports.

I hope KGO puts Christine Craft on in a regular shift on weekends.

Clear Channel in a much better position to put talk on FM now ...

    Interesting-er and interesting-er.

  27. Isn't Allisone Janey the same tonsil who also does the Fremont Bank ads and used to do the WaMu ads back when it was a cute, cozy little bank before the collapse? I like her voice.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Just looked up the "voice" (or former) voice of Kaiser, and she doesn't look much better than she sounds. Maybe I saw the wrong photo. But, to each to his own bad taste. Repetition does not necessarily breed acceptance, and I know several people who turn her off when she comes on the radio in an ad. I'm not the only one. If the person who said she is now off the Kaiser ads is correct, then I'll start listening to Eric Davis on the new FM sports station, because KNBR either has 1) juevnile (mid- to late mornings) hosts 2) arrogant hosts noon-3 3) raspy-voiced dude who should never have made it to prime time, but he's friend with a Pizzeria owner. Makes sense to me. 95.7 FM is my choice (unless the ugly chick with the boring witch voice is on) over KNBR any day.

  29. Allison Janney (Kaiser spots) - excellent voice actor. The new Kaiser voice doesn't even come close.

  30. I don't care who that Kaiser voice is, she reminds me of the second grade teacher that used to rap my knuckles. Same reason I can't stand HIllary Clinton. Makes me wanna to join Arnold in the cigar tent. Same with the Sutter Health commercials. Straight males have been come the useful idiots of our time.

I wouldn't worry about Rothmann, google the jweekly article about him, he is well placed and they want him on the air.

I'd like to see Ray T back. I'm disappointed that he will not be there to passionately support Obama in the upcoming election cycle. Sure Obama has problems but do we really want president Romney???? I feel alone at night. I want that radio blistering hot when I can't sleep at 3am. Forget the ghost stories, UFO's and remote viewing nonsense.

Been missing Gene's sensible commentary lately. Can't wait to hear him oagain. Gil was good too. Hope he comes back.

  31. Maybe tonight, the blowhard who "replaced" Dr. Bill can talk about Area 51 and how Santa Claus is really a CIA conspiracy. Maybe he'll tell us Rudolph is actually a paranormal genetic experiment that went awry. If he believes so much in the paranormal, why doesn't he know if he's gonna be on KGO much longer? I can't wait. Oh, wait, yes I can. I won't be listening to the bore.

  32. @11:06am, are you an idiot or just pretending to be one? Are you one of those Silicon Valley Millenials who think anyone North of 25 is old and should retire? Ray Taliafero does 3 hours of radio. Why would you say he is old? If he was doing striptease shows now I would say he is old, if he was doing roofing work or digging ditches I would say he is old. He is an intellectual and a radio personality. He is not old for that line of work. You sir need to shut the f*uck up.

  33. LOL at "I just can imagine her screaming at her writer interns"... interns!?!?! even interns won't work at KRON

  34. I that mean spirited Spencer Hughes gone from KGO? He hasn't been scheduled since Monday.

  35. 11:06 sounds like a P.O.'d Ray T. He's the only who uses the words, "you, sir," in the same context that I know of. Ever. Ray, just sign your name. Not sure how intellectual you are, Ray, given the fact that you believe in your "fellow" species and all your talks about there being no Creator or Divine force, etc., but I support your right to be ignorant. If you call that intellectual, then so be it.

  36. I got to meet and interview Mark Ibanez back in the late 1990s for our final project in Career Decisions class in High School (since I wanted to be a sports journalist).

He truly was a class act...got to tour the studio...walk on the set of the 10 o'clock news...the 49er's Playbook set...and then sat down with me for a good hour or so talking about his position at KTVU as Sports Director. I remember asking him where he thought his profession (sports journalism) would be in 10 years and he replied with something like, "print media will be obsolete. Everything will be on the internet". The man saw what was coming. So glad to hear he's still around.

  40. Rich,
I loved your show yesterday on KSCO.........when will you be coming back? I loved it when his mother told you to shut up! And then you layed some yiddish on her........I felt she is mean spirited and can't role with it. Can you fire her? Anyway, you have alot of potential for radio.... and don't allow KSCO to get in your way of fame and fortune........I haven't heard anything so fresh and amusing since Bobby Slayton and Mancow! That is over 20yrs ago.......
