  2. No.Brian is just small potatoes. If their is a a REAL tool ,its Billy Beane aka Slick Billy. The man lies, obfuscates and deceives the A's fans out of their money as he delivers junk baseball year after year.
Today's newsgroup article where they again say Beane will sell off/trade the A's best players for prospects is more of why I despise the man-a corporate tool of the Fisher family.Just more of a plain case of good old boy executives screwing the public. Beane? Losing is failing upwards for him..and you would think locals would rail against him. But,Beane is a schmoozer who has most local media eating out of his hand-for what gain and why? YOU FIGURE IT OUT.
Get rid of Beane..get rid of the A's group.

  5. What's your beef with Copeland other than you disagree with his politics? I hope you are not someone who stereotypes political stance by race. That would be shallow.

  6. in this economy, especially the radio biz...i will not demean any of the on air talent for kissing up to the man

long gone are the days when one could hear a howard stern ripping his bosses a new one right on the air

ward used to do it...hes now in prison

  7. More tools? Bill Romonowski and Tony Bruno on Comcast. Romo-who defended Paterno and the system that runs Penn State, with Bruno who after a few shots of vino, tweets about "illegals" playing for the Giants. Real fun guys you want to have on air. I thought Griggs had some scruples..But Romo and Bruno's coldness to molested kids or poor latins isnt bothering Ted Griggs.

  8. Note to The Not a Genuine Black Man: management didn't keep you because they think you can "contribute" to the new KGO. They kept you because you work cheap like everyone else they didn't fire (except the middle of the roader with a clever contract lawyer). What a spineless, disgraceful exhibit this morning by you Copey. You didn't want to take calls you coward!

  9. I'm sure that all the commenters here who are ranting against the survivors for not staging some sort of on-air uprising would be totally brave if they found themselves in the same situation. How many of you have ever quit a good job or taken simililarly self-destructive action because you thought your employer unfairly fired somebody else? JW

  10. Anon @ 12:10, I don't think it was anything Brian Copeland said on-air as much as some rather pointed comments he made about Rich over the last couple of days on ba.broadcast (take a look via Google Groups or a Usenet reader, if you're a fogey like me who still visits Usenet groups). Rich and Copie have been writing poison love letters to each other in public for a while now - Rich via this blog, Copie via ba.broadcast.

According to this week's scorecard, Rich is a "turd" and Copie is a "tool." But who is "rubber" and who is "glue"? That will be the deciding factor in this titanic clash of media personalities. (And by "titanic clash" I mean "yawnfest of a pissing contest.")

  11. "Copey": Didn't he have "issues" with his white ex-wife?

  12. Humm. So both his former and current wife are white? Interesting tidbits, given his political views and all, but so typical. I thought one show was hilarious when Copeland was talking about racism and then interracial dating. Apparently, Copelands screener, who was black, had a white girlfriend. And his producer (also black) had an ex wife who was white, and a current wife who was white. But none of them had the ability to deal with that contradiction, given thir political views.

The kicker was when a caller told Brian Copeland that his friend, who was black, was pulled over in Orinda 7 times in a 3 month period. The caller asked, "Might this be 'driving while black'? Racism?" Copeland busted a gut, and said, "Driving while black? Orinda? Your friend was pulled over 7 times? Absolutely it was racism!!" The caller then replied, "Actually, Brian, I changed one fact. It was me. I was pulled over 7 times, and I'm white. So by chaning that one fact, what happens to your assumption that it was racism? Can you explain that away?"

Copeland cut off the caller, but there was nervous laughter between him, his producer, and call screener.

I don't think that Pete Wilson, Dr. Bill, or Gene Burns would fall for such narrow thinking.

  13. Brian runs an interesting, fun, eclectic show.

He has shown great growth in his abilities over the time that he has done fill-in work for weekday prime-time slots (e.g., substituting for Ronn Owens). He is confident, composed, and smooth now when he moves to prime time.

My only beef? When Brian referred to the dearly departed, he briefly summarized the situation by saying he would not be taking calls, by saying "thanks," and then going to commercial.

All that I was waiting to hear, after his fine tribute describing what a long list of hosts has meant to him in terms of mentoring and guidance, was "Thanks, we miss you, we love you."

"Thanks" was just too little to my ear.

If Cumulus decided to pull the plug on Brian, that's exactly what I would say to him: "Thanks for the many thought-provoking HOURS of entertainment, we miss you, we love you."

It is a tough situation for all of the hosts who still have a job. They are each doing it in their own ways... Pat, Karel, Brian, et al.

    Biggest irony to me today?

Pre-recorded, food-related Gene Burns' commercials running during his normal show hours, ditto for Leo LaPorte with tech commercials during his normal show hours.

I'll bet THAT boggled the minds of some regular listeners who had not heard the news.

  14. Brian is a tool. No doubt. The sound of his voice is like shards of breaking glass, fingernails down a chalkboard. Why they could not have canned his ass too is beyond me.

  15. Brian is as afraid of losing his job as the rest of the talk show hosts who weren't canned. OTOH, it was a cowardly move on his part to not take calls.

As for Karel, he was what I'd call "refreshingly blunt" Saturday night. He said "It's *radio*, folks." He's been fired before, and he even said he didn't know whether he'd be back next week, but that he planned on enjoying whatever air time he had.

  16. BRIAN COPELAND NEEDS TO GO AND MANY OF US ARE CALLING KGO DEMANDING HE BE FIRED FOR HIS RACIST COMMENTS...THEY KEPT HIM AND PAT THURSTON BECAUSE THEY ARE CHEAP

  17. I like Pat. She's a firecracker and I happen to agree with her politics. She is also an empathic person who tries to see the other side, or at least gives it a listen. She has guts.

Brian, on the other hand, is an extremely boring, monochromatic host. Most of his statements sound exactly like his other statements. There's little excitement or music in his voice, and he doesn't think things through. He gets on a rant and runs with it and is dogmatic. BUT, what is interesting about Brian is that he does a wonderful solo show. His, "Not A Genuine Black Man," was incredibly moving. Many people cried during this show which recently closed at the Marsh after years, in fact, it was the longest running solo show in Bay Area history. So, he's a fine writer, a good actor, and has a lot of emotional intelligence. But he's not a good radio host. I don't know why. But he just falls flat on the air. I used to like him when he was on with Ronn doing the R & B joke hour. They love each other so much, it was like listening to two 17 year olds, or maybe 11 year olds, getting off on being silly, talking about sex. But since the hosts have been fired, I can't listen to Ronn (who toed that company line) and I'm bored with Brian. They handled this crisis like a couple of cowards, especially Ronn, who put down the listeners who would have fallen on their swords for him, had he been fired. Now, no one cares.
