Peter Finch out at KFOG; Saturday ramblings

*Peter Finch, the News/Public Affairs guy, is out at KFOG/Cumulus. He was there eighteen years. Official explanation: some sort of mutual parting. The news release was the usual tepid amount of dreck. Unofficially, my gut tells me that he was expendable because....well, he was, expendable.

*So I guess if an Occupy SF protest that draws hundreds of riot police takes place in SF, nobody cares, except KTVU. If Oakland is the epicenter, there's epic coverage. And yes, I realize there was no tear gas, fires and mayhem in the city Friday night, but the sheer amount of cops and holiday shoppers demanded more coverage. KTVU, good call. Just my opinion.

*I don't necessarily need a bundle of "International news." I know the consultants tell the stations that by and large viewers here, (and elsewhere), want more local news. But the saturation coverage of Black Friday was deplorable, frankly, embarrassing. Did we have to be fed umpteen images of the various lunatic happenings; the incessant reports of the wackjob woman in LA pepper-spraying customers; the usual crazy people shooting people at Walmart, etc? It all comes down to simple common sense and yes, judgement. Just because they say you have to feed the viewers this crap doesn't mean it's right. Give 'em something different. Try something new and you might be surprised.

*Letters: Beginning next Saturday, and throughout: your letters are welcome. Anything about local news and TV/radio is welcome. I'll publish the best ones. Name and city please.

  1. Stacie Taylor was back today on KGO. I thought Damon Bruce did well last week but Taylor completely outclasses Bruce in that genre!

  3. Peter was a solid part of KFOG for many years and deserved a better fate, but that whole operation at 55 Hawthorne has changed radically under new management. Perhaps a change will be a good thing for Peter, but I know he wanted to stay in the business and it will be tough to find a new gig in the current climate of downsizing and dumbing down local radio. Too bad! Another good broadcaster is sent packing to keep the bottom line fatter for the shareholders and CEOs!

  4. Taylor is a better informed statist drone than Bruce. At least Bruce has some non PC opinions about sports.

  5. How's this for Americana media?: I'm watching all the Christmas commercials..everybody is wholesome..almost all white, every wife and mother is blond, and nobody is fat. Then the game is on..The New York Jets with the coach who has a foot fetish, that advertised his wife on a adult web site as having puffy nipples and bush...with a PBP Announcer who has been known to crossdress with hookers while asking for a black man, calling the throws of a QB who "met " his girlfriend when some say was 17..and those throws are to Plaxico, the reciever who shot himself in the leg and went to prison.
    Merry Christmas!

  8. How about a topic of local newswoman who couldnt take themselves more serious? to the point of being obnoxious to watch?..Laura Anthony is like a burned out special ed teacher..couldn't be more sour. Tori Campbell who reaks of prententious super mom "And I married a business exec, and I live in San Ramon, and I do bands and church groups, and swell things!"..eesh...and for now Claudine Wong who no doubt toiled in the mines before the world realized she's special. More later...

  9. Best voice in the business? Clearly, you are confusing Mr. Finch with Mr. Morey.

  10. No more god-awful "Beat of the Bay" community programming at 5 am weekends on KNBR? I guess that leaves more room for Goombah Gambling Shows!

  11. Larry Krueger took a shot at Damon Bruce today...saying to one caller about politics "Its not like I have a show on KGO on Saturdays for three hours" Yeah,it was a shot, not a joke.....its all Larry knows.
