Obama turns away SF/local media for campaign stop at W Hotel--Mistake

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Obama is in town at the W Hotel for a campaign stop. No big deal. Except this: The local press corps has been banned from the event. Not just the weeklies, the Internet folks, but the biggies like the Chronicle, the Merc, local TV and radio too.

Huh?

The White House will provide a pool account from Obama's pricey, ($7500 a pop), luncheon to the SF media.

Said Nicole Wallace, former GOP press aide: "This is like banning the local Austin, Texas press from covering a Bush event in Crawford." Indeed, how thoroughly dumb from the inner circle of Barack Obama aides.

Maybe they're paranoid. Maybe the fact that the lunch is at the "W" hotel brought out a red flag. I'm not kidding.

If the Obama campaign thinks a hostile SF press corp is in order, they need to conduct a group session. This is a case of the unintentional theatre of the absurd. What? Is Carla Marinucci suddenly Maureen Dowd? Please. And this, from an administration that promised to be the "most transparent" in US history. Yeah, that's pretty funny.

This is an easy call: The White House fucked up here, big time.

  1. I agree-those SF Democrats are his best friend.

BUT, last year when the Chrons Carla whats her name did a minute by minute reporting on Obama's location the White House it seems has stayed miffed at the locals. She -I think the White House felt- put the president in some danger to terrorists.
Figure Bronstein's org. would do the WORLD GLOBE type reporting. He done any more front page story's of Los Angeles Mexicans doing something wacky lately?

  2. Sure - bad move.

Off topic - but I was listening to KGO last night and they ran an ad for one of the Sheriff's candidates - what was odd is that it sounded like it it was done by someone a lot like the guy who does KGO's in-house promos, but instead of getting people to listen to Gil Gross, he was encouraging people to vote for a guy for Sheriff. Almost sounded like an endorsement.

  3. This guy is "changing" things to an even more Orwellian setup than the previous administration. Now THAT takes some doing...

  4. Carla What's her name???? you must be kidding. Carla Marinucci is one of the most able political reporters/editors in this country..definitely in the top ten..the upper tier..If you don't already know that..you're not the brightest observer of the political scene..I agree that blocking the press at this event..was very poorly considered.

  5. Wasn't the in-house promo guy cut loose by KGO?

  6. Bias in the news is showing up everywhere. Not just Fox, maybe TV and radio reporters should change
their sig outs to include their party affiliation too!!!

  7. Carla was able alright. She,on Obama's last visit was able to be a human GPS on the presidents location by the minute, ignoring White House requests and protocol.
Kudos to Obama for coming back and not banning her and for her selfish endangering of the president.

  8. Obama is a total failure and the less coverage he gets the better. That is how they are thinking. Right now his only hope for re-election is that the truly stupid humans are now the majority in this country. We're not there yet.

  9. 1257 is a bright as Hank Williams JR.
He seems to have forgotten who took out Bin Laden,Who took out Khadafi, who is repairing the economy a corrupt Bush regime looted with bankers help...republican bankers. He has ended the Iraq war and its half a billion dollar PER MONTH cost(or more?) to this country. How many schools or teachers would that have brought over the last DECADE?
The idiots are the carpers of what miracle Obama hasn't done-yet.

  11. the president is blocking more than just the top political reporter in town....in this town and others... Carla Marinucci endangered no one. Read a little history. THE most public figure of all public figures in this country is the president. No reporter is bound by a "request" from the White HOuse...as you suggest. If you don't like the scrutiny..better to pick a different line of work. Would that more reporters had the instincts of Carla Marinucci..human GPS indeed.

  12. Obama is going to throw some red meat to the local donors that he doesn't want repeated in public. Something like the "bitter clingers" remark of a few years ago. Sh!t you can say to rich progressives in SF that the rest of the country finds repulsive.

  13. Stan (aka 2:00), Obama isn't a Navy SEAL, he didn't take out Bin Laden.

Obama didn't take out Khadafi, militant Islamists did. (OK, if you want to give that one to Obama, that's your mistake if you're his supporter...)

Obama is in bed with Goldman Sachs, and is as responsible for the current mess as the previous regime.

He hasn't ended the war in Iraq, the troops aren't home yet. And they're still in Afghanistan, where Karzai says he'll side with Pakistan over the U.S.

I'd say go put that in your pipe and smoke it, but unless it's the sanctioned Marlboro's, you'd better watch out for Holder and the DEA. Obama has increased the Feds activity with dispensaries. Good one for his base, no?

  14. Much ado about nothing. Local newsies never get anything inside a presidential event except a shaky long-distance shot from a podium at the back of a room. Oh, and a stand-up with the station's "political reporter" as the event is breaking up to demonstrate what a truly magnificent news muffin he is. The rest of the time, local reporters and crews are kept inside a tightly controlled pen. All the locals ban does is break the illusion of live, local, in-depth, breaking team coverage as it happens. If a local crew inside a presidential event ever did anything worthwhile, I'd be a little more concerned about this ban, but they haven't and I'm not.

  16. 12:57, 2:16, If only the truly enlightened elite, a vanguard if you will, like Obama, Pelosi, Reid and Boxer really ran the country, things would turn around in a hurry. Oh, they did run the country for 2 years.. Too bad the truly stupid voters threw them out and will finish the job next year. There must be some way to fix the stupid voter problem. Perhaps the Occupy Movement will do the trick.

  17. Yeah, Christine!
    Miss your voice on KGO.

  18. Obama's biggest problem is the mess he inherited. Everyone wanted a quick fix and it isn't happening because we've been doing business the same way for the better part of 30 years. You don't change that culture of greed and short sidedness overnight.

Americans used to be content with getting by with the basics, having time for their families, and enjoying the simple pleasures. Now it seems most of us have been conditioned by lucrative commercials on TV and the radio and newspapers, (not to mention the internet!) into buying a lot of crap that is not going to change your life for the better. Many of us will fill up their homes with it, or worse, have to rent storage space to pay someone else to watch it!

Many of us Americans also used our homes as piggy-banks, instead of buying a 'home' and investing in a community. Instead, we expected someone to take it off our hands and receive an outrageous windfall. Everyone wants to get rich quick with some 'miracle' or 'brilliant' idea.
Guess what...you have to work hard to get it!
Yes, we should be mad at the big banks and the Republicans and the ruling class, but we also shouldn't put the blame entirely on Wall Street...after all they've been doing what they do for years with only variations.

I wish we would some responsibility and stop playing the 'blame game.' We're all culpable, even those of us who were 'downsized' out of our jobs. You can't trust big business so don't buy into it.

This is a free and open and liberal society where people are supposed to act like adults and take some responsibility. That's how healthy communities are formed.

Expecting a president to change the culture and behavior of individuals (not to mention institutions) is unrealistic. No leader in recent times (last 60 years)...not FDR...not JFK, and not even Reagan or Clinton were able to turn things around as far as the way we covet
material, resources and money. Make due with less, spend more time with your friends and family and make your community a better place by helping out. It's up to us, the people to make our voices heard and to take part in our democracy. Does any of this make sense? I hope so!

  19. coming soon.stay tuned! 4:04 ....As for the poster at 3:32 who claimed that local reporters never get more than penned away from the Prez...that's just not true. I've asked Ronald Reagan,Bush 1, and Jimmy Carter questions at pressers in different locales...and I'm no Carla Marinucci!

  23. Now I understand just why Oprah Winfrey went into retirement this year...After actively Campaigning for the now President, and saying that "Barack Obama Is Brilliant." Then watching this Man Disappoint, and Fall Short of his Campaign Promises...I'd high-tail it off of a Popular TV talk show too!

  24. "Obama isn't a Navy SEAL, he didn't take out Bin Laden. "

He gave the order. But if you want to play that game, Reagan didn't end the Cold War because I didn't see him swinging any sledge hammers against the wall in 89. He didn't really fight the Communists either because he never fought in a war.

Wee, this is fun when you can parse words and have your head up your ass, isn't it??

  26. nonsense..7:40 Carla Marinucci's gender is not what makes her a savvy political reporter/editor.Plenty of reporters male and female were barred from the Prez.. or didn't you know?

  27. 11:39, you do seem to be the expert at what it must be like to have one's head up one's ass. Don't you have an anti-Krueger rant to spew?

  28. Here is one truth. Blacks almost 90 percent will support this inept community organizer. It's part of their own self-hating and defeatist attitude. They give Obama leeway that no other president would ever have. Always an excuse, or the ultimate canard, Obama is treated more critically because he's Black. That's why I find it amusing that Herman Cain is now leading the Republican race. You frigging, low class, self hating, left wing, race baiting, lying hypocrites.

  30. @ 9:55AM....That is a False statement you made, not all Black ppl voted for Obama in '08. And after seeing his Lackluster performance in Office, I seriously doubt that many of them will come out to vote for Obama in the numbers that they did in 2008.

Btw...I'm African American, and in 2008 I did not vote for Obama, because I saw him for the Phony that he is, and for his Lack of Experience in Leadership...JMO...
