*KGO and KNBR, now under the same corporate umbrella. How poignant. And how appropriate is it that both radio stations have virtually zero minority staffers. Shall we examine?
KNBR has an exclusive all, (except for one), white male- dominated line-up:
5-9 AM: "Murph and Mac": White air-talent, white producers. One token woman traffic reporter, (who works for Metro).
9-Noon: "Gary and Larry": Two white hosts, a white producer, and said white woman.
Noon-3: "Fitz and Brooks": White male, and huzzah!, one black host, (The only one at Knibber)
3-7 PM: "Razor and Mr. T": Two white hosts and one white producer.
7-10 PM "Sportsphone 680 with Eric Byrnes": One white host with white producer.
SHAMEFUL.
KGO: One wee-hour black talk-show host and a fill-in. But lots of women. Yippee. (Not one black reporter in the newsroom.)
I'm hardly a wonk for minority hiring. I believe in the business of talent. But in a city that professes to possess diversity, this is a colossal joke.
Rich, this has been noticed by me for a couple years. Thanks so much for putting it out there. WOuld be nice for a Monty Poole or Kawakami or someone else with a different view to be on, but KNBR will never do that.
ReplyDeleteAlso Rich,when you watch the Radnich show on Comcast..even the interns are all white..mostly male and every now and then a young white woman will walk by. Jerry,the Asian part time producer is gone I guess.
ReplyDeleteIt just makes Patrick Connor's rants about "Discriminated against white people" -Oh,yes he has said that, look even more foolish as he sounds off in a office of all white, to hosts all white for bosses-Lee Hammer and Bungerhole, famous for white only hiring.
Then,you have 95.7 and Eric Davis..and ONLY Eric Davis for all people of color at that station.
It makes Ted Griggs at Comcast hirings look like a flaming liberal MLK and Ghandi rolled into one...on a certain level.

What about Asians? Are there any Asians at KGO? Not that I've noticed, anyway.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say there are "lots" of women at KGO, at least not with their own talk shows. Pat Thurston and Greggins appear on the weekends. Christine Craft is a fill-in although I haven't heard her lately which is too bad since she is one of KGO's best hosts, male or female.
Can't say anything about KNBR because I never listen.

ReplyDeleteA bit of background. I got called "wetback", "beaner" and other insults because people thought I was mexican when I was a kid. For ages I really empathized with Central American folks, and folks of color in general, having dealt with what I did as a young kid.
But as the years went by, I experienced as much racism from Mexicans, and some from blacks too. The white folks are by NO means the only people with the potential for bigotry. Believe me, hispanics and blacks and even asians are capable of it.
Don't tell me that "well, whites control the big companies" BS. Shantanu N. of India is the CEO of Adobe. As soon as he gained the CEO position, he started outsourcing all the jobs that paid well here to legal residents and citizens of this country, and sent them to his homeland of India.
If you ask me, Shantanu Narayan is a bigot too. Are you going to spout off about him? He affects the media with his products, and is a Bay Area notable.
Adobe, your Subcontinent Leader.
And KNBR's one black host, Rod Brooks, is whiter than all of them.

ReplyDeleteHow about the under-representation of physically challenged talent at KNBR? No deaf or dumb broadcasters (except for Ralph) Also no transgender talent.
What next Rich? Outrage because KNBR doesn't provide on-site childcare?
There is no diversity in SF because there is no diversity of opinion or ideology. Either you are PC and progressive or you are rejected.

ReplyDeleteMurph by the way was complicit in the 'Krueger-gate' affair several years back when he guffawed after his producer played the 'churchlady' bit from South Park in response to Felipe Alou's over the top 'Satan' comments about Krueger from ESPN.
The producer was fired, Krueger was fired, and Bob Agnew was fired, but Murph never even got a slap on the wrist and he was the guy who chortled like a stupid frat-boy when the producer played the bit on the air. If he'd shut up his pie-hole and just not reacted, the whole mess would have died down. I guess life ain't fair!
